ooc; SEASON ONE. EPISODE TWO.
The dirt around her grave was still soft. Piles of flowers from all her friends at Stanford were heaping so high that the marble grave was barely visible. Sam looked down at the flowers in his shaking hands as he knelt. "Jess...I should have been there to protect you. I should have told you about what I do...I should have told you everything." A few stray tears leaked from his eyes and splashed onto the picture of her face. Those stupid dreams...he knew now that he shouldn't have kept them to himself, but it was too late. He reached forward to place the flowers in and amongst everyone else's and a hand shot up from the dirt to grab his wrist, pulling him down.....
He woke with a start. The Impala was speeding down a back road, the sun beating down on its black hood. Dean, in her driver's seat as usual, spared him a strange look. "Are you ok?" Sam nodded blankly. "I'm fine." It had been a week since Jess had died. A week since they had scoured every inch of Stanford's campus and the surrounding areas with nothing to show for it.
"Where are we anyway?" He sat up a little straighter in his seat, looking out the window to avoid Dean's probing eyes.

What on earth were you supposed to do when your younger brother's girlfriend gets killed by the same thing that killed your mother 22 years ago? Dean was at a loss. His father had compiled a journal of what to do when faced with almost every supernatural creature known to man, but no journal had been composed for this situation.
When Sam woke with a start from what was probably his dozenth nightmare, Dean felt like he should do or say something meaningful but nothing was coming to mind. And Sam wasn't offering any helpful hints, which was a serious blow to the way their relationship usually worked. Dean was usually the stoic silent one and Sam was usually the one begging for conversation and feelings-talk.
With nothing else to say, Dean simply answered the question on the table. "Just outside of grand junction. We'll be there soon." He flicked his eyes from the road to Sam and then back to the road. "Sam..."

"Just drive, Dean." Sam settled back in his seat, staring out the window. The rest of the ride was quiet, despite the fact that you could easily tell that Dean was not readily dropping the subject of Sam's frequent nightmares. In fact, you could tell from his edginess that he was prepared to bring it up again at the very next opening he got. Well Sam was just as prepared to not give him that opening. ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
"Ok, so black water ridge is mostly known for its vast woodlands. Very few people actually hike around here and those who do are serious hikers, not just tourists." Sam read aloud from the pamphlet he was holding while Dean toured the ranger station, occasionally pointing out pictures of large animals. After a highly impressed, "Dude check out the size of this bear", Sam swatted his brother's head with the pamphlet to remind him why they were there and went back to reading. "Over 30,000 grizzlies roam those woods. Most in the country." Dean took a step back from the picture, eying it warily as though it was going to come to life and bite his head off.
Sam closed the pamphlet with a frustrated sigh. "I still have no idea why Dad would send us to the middle of nowhere."

"I'm sure he had a good reason and we can ask him that when we find him." Dean took the pamphlet from Sam and began browsing through it. An unfamiliar voice broke through his concentration. "You boys aren't planning a trip up black water ridge by any chance are you?" The wiry ranger pointed a thin finger at the pamphlet in Dean's hands.
Dean gave him a reassuring smile. "Oh no, sir. Wouldn't dream of it. I hear there are bears out there."
The ranger nodded. "Yes there are. Several thousand. But if you aren't planning a hike then what are you doing here?" He eyed them curiously.

Sam stared at Dean in agitation. He couldn't understand why Dean was acting so casual and cavalier about all this. He NEEDED to find their father. It was the only thing he had thought about since Jess' death and now Dean, the one who had started this crazy hunt for John Winchester, was acting like he couldn't care less if the man was found. But before Sam could voice any of this, the park station ranger was advising them against hiking.
Sam smiled politely. "We're environmental study majors at UC Boulder. Just doing some research for a paper." He thought he had been pretty convincing but the ranger just gave him a piercing look and spoke one word. "Bull." Sam swapped a look with Dean but before either of them could try to explain anything, the ranger was continuing. "You're friends with that Hayley girl aren't you? She's sent four of you already."

Dean's hesitation vanished when a bonified excuse for their presence was handed to them by the ranger. "Guilty." He shrugged with an easy smile. "Boy, that Hayley girl sure is a pistol..." He threw this out there, hoping it described her well enough for the ranger to say something else that may be of assistance.
He snorted. "You got that right. But I'll tell you the same thing I told her and the other friends she's sent this way. Tommy filled out a hiking permit. And his permit says he'll be away for another three days. So it ain't exactly a missing person if you know what I mean."
Dean nodded slowly, taking all this in. "Well sure, I understand. But..." He took a step towards the ranger, an idea striking him. "What would really help calm her down, I think, is if she could see a copy of that permit. Actually see with her own two eyes that her brother himself filled out a return date of three days from now." The ranger shrugged and handed it over.
"Too easy" Dean crowed once they had reached the parking lot. He glanced down at the paper to find the address they needed to visit and when he looked back up, Sam was giving him a somewhat belligerent frown. "What?" He wasn't sure he liked the look on Sam. It was really more of a Dean look, in his own personal opinion.

"What do you mean, what" Sam shot right back, his temper rising again. "Why are we even going to see this girl? Dad sent us coordinates...not to her house but to Black Water Ridge. Let's just go." He toed the ground in frustration, wondering for the hundredth time why Dean wasn't more amped up about finding their father. Just a few weeks ago, it had been the most important thing ever and he had had a gut feeling that John was in trouble. And now...now he had time to take a detour to some girl's house just because she was a little worried about her brother on a hiking trip??

Dean raised an eyebrow. "Gee, I don't know...maybe so we're a little prepared and don't just go rushing off into miles and miles and miles of woods without knowing what we're up against?" He opened the driver's side door but didn't get into the car. Instead he kept staring at Sam, who finally got tired of it and snapped, "What?", to which Dean shrugged. "Nothing...it's just that being the snarky, angry one is supposed to be my job. I think I've only seen you like this once in our whole lives and that was the night you left us for Stanford."
"So?" Sam stared fiercely back.
"So...when are you all shoot first, questions later anyway" Dean wanted to know, as this was, again, a usual trait of his and not the younger Winchester. "Since now" came the acidic response.
Dean rolled his eyes.

Sam got into the car and slammed the door, sitting in the passenger seat with his arms crossed...sort of like a little kid having a temper tantrum. What was so wrong with wanting to just skip out of question and answer sessions with some hormonal teenager freaking out because her brother was having too much fun to check in? What was wrong with just wanting to head straight to the exact location their father had left as a clue of his whereabouts?
He was silent the whole car ride, which wasn't really that long of a time as it only took just over five minutes to get from the ranger's station to Hayley's house with Dean driving.

Dean spared his brother one last undecipherable look before getting out of the car and walking up to the front door where he rang the bell and waited. Sam took a few seconds longer and hung out a foot or two behind Dean, still visible to whomever would open the door but not exactly jumping for joy to get in there.
The girl who finally opened the door was perhaps a few years younger than Dean, maybe around Sam's age, with curly black hair and matching black eyes that were curious but guarded. "Hello? Can I help you with something?"
Dean flashed her his charm-filled, award winning smile. "Hi Hayley. I'm Dean and this is Sam. We're rangers with the park service and we're here to ask you about your brother." Her guard was not easily let down, Dean could tell, as she kept the closed door between them. "Let me see some ID." Dean was used to this question and had fashioned both he and Sam fake park ranger IDs for this particular ranger station, while still back at the station for cases like this. So he pulled out his and stuck it to the outer screen door, waited for her to nod and then put the ID back in his pocket.
"So the park service finally decided to listen to me about Tommy" she inquired, leading Sam and Dean down a hallway to a small, but cozy kitchen. A younger boy was sitting at the table with the same black curls as his sister, except for the length which was much shorter.
Dean gave an affirmative nod. "Absolutely. In fact, we're heading out there tomorrow. We just wanted to ask you some routine questions first." He took the buttered roll she was offering and took a healthy bite. She handed another one to her brother and dusted off her hands. "Well then maybe I'll see you out there." Dean stopped chewing with an inquisitive look that she answered without any verbal prompting. "I've waited too long already. Tommy might be seriously hurt and so I've hired a guide and tomorrow, we're going out there to find him."
Dean swallowed. "That may not be the best"- "How do you know he isn't just having fun and forgot to check in" Sam cut across him.
Dean stared at him.

"He wouldn't do that" the boy at the table shot back with a surprising amount of force, speaking for the first time since Sam and Dean had entered. Hayley gave his shoulder a squeeze before explaining, "Our parents are dead. It's just the three of us. Tommy would never go a day without checking in and it's been three."
Sam put up his hands to show he was backing off of his attack. "Ok. Well would you mind showing us his check up videos and pictures?" Hayley nodded and put down the salad bowl she had been holding. "They're on my computer. Right over here."
She led the boys over to a small table in the adjoining room and pulled up a file of pictures and videos sent over the last week from her brother. They scrolled through them one at a time and none of them registered a reaction except for the last one, the video entitled "day 6". It was after this one was played that Sam furrowed his brow. "Hayley, would you mind forwarding these to me?" He scrawled down his email, never taking his eyes from the screen, where he could have sworn he saw something moving behind the tent. Something fast.

"So what was with asking for the videos back there" Dean wondered aloud curiously as they sat alone in their motel room later that night. Sam opened up his laptop and scrolled through his latest email until the desired video was on the screen. "Check it out." He clicked a few keys in rapid succession and replayed the clip, but this time he slowed it down.
Dean leaned forward, seeing what Sam had seen back at Hayley's house. "What the...." He trailed off, squinting at the screen. "Run that again." Sam obeyed, slowing the clip even more and clicking through three frames to show as clearly as he could the distinct shadowy outline of something moving past the tent. "What is that?"
Sam flipped the laptop's cover closed and stood up, stretching. "Whatever it is, it's fast. That was like a nanosecond of real time." He crossed to their small kitchen, opened the cooler that was parked there, and took out two beers. Dean held up a hand to catch one of them, twisted off the top skillfully and took a long drink. His brain was working overtime trying to piece together all of the information that they had on this thing...an admittedly small amount...to try and narrow down what they could be dealing with. Nothing came to mind.
"Well, I say we just head out there tomorrow morning and at least keep Hayley and her brother and that guide safe. Maybe we'll figure out what it is while we're out there." He finished off his beer and left the empty bottle on the table between him and Sam, who was looking restless again. Rolling his eyes, Dean stood and faced him. "What now?"
He wasn't sure he wanted to hear the answer.

Sam ran both hands over his face to try and internalize some of his aggressive feelings but it didn't work out so well, as he found himself shouting. "So finding Dad's not enough! Hunting down what killed Mom and Jess isn't enough?! Now we've got to baby-sit too??? Dean, whatever it is out there, no matter what it is...these people don't stand a chance. We need to go up there alone!"
To emphasize his frustration, he swiped a pile of papers from the table with one hand, littering the floor with them. His mind was once again consumed with thoughts of grief and revenge.

Dean's eyes traveled slowly up from the fallen papers to Sam's expression, watching the muscle tick in his jaw. "Sam, their brother is missing. They aren't just going to sit this one out and hope authorities do their job. You'd think we might be able to relate...what with Dad missing and all." He paused a beat and then continued trying to make his point. "If some stranger came up to us and said 'don't worry, we'll find him, you stay home', would you listen? Cause I sure as hell wouldn't. And judging from the way you've been acting lately, you wouldn't either. So don't expect them to."
"That's different" Sam huffed.
"How?" Dean leveled him with a challenging stare and Sam returned it without batting an eyelash. "We know about what's out there Dean. We know how to fight and kill monsters and how to protect ourselves. They don't."
"So we stay with them. Protect them." Dean pulled a gun from under his pillow and lay it down with a hard thunk on the table between them. "It's the only way."

"They're already here." Sam gestured through the windshield as Dean pulled the Impala to a halt behind a large truck, which a highly muscular man carrying a gun was pulling a rucksack from the trunk. The brothers got out of the Impala and Dean locked her up before they crossed to stand with Hayley and Ben. Roy, their guide, joined them a few seconds later, giving Sam and Dean an incredulous look. "Who are they?"
Hayley answered before either Sam or Dean got a chance. "This is all the park service could rustle up for the search and rescue." She eyed them doubtfully but a small smile could be seen fighting its way through. The guide's doubt was even larger and more obvious than Hayley's. He looked them up and down. "You're rangers?"
"Yes." Dean didn't elaborate on this as he brushed by Roy, clapping him on the shoulder as he passed. Sam gave a brief nod as well, shouldering his and Dean's shared duffel bag. It was full of a wide variety of weapons that would work on a variety of creature so that no matter what was out there, they would be ready.
