The somewhat odd group of five started off into the woods, making no sounds at first other than their boots crunching through sticks and fallen leaves. But after awhile Dean found himself walking next to Roy who was holding his rifle stiffly, a gravely serious look on his face. Dean found his urge to say something was just a little too strong to ignore.
"So Roy...you're a hunter...you've been hunting for very long?" Roy grunted and gave a clipped nod but said nothing. "What kind of things do you hunt?" Dean kept pace with Roy while Sam, Hayley and Ben hung back a little.
Roy spared a sideways glance for Dean. "Dear and rabbits mostly." Not the most talkative of people.
"I see." Dean couldn't stop himself from asking the next question...maybe some people might think it just to amuse himself, although the truth of the matter was he was deadly serious about it. "Does Bambi or thumper ever hunt you back?"
Roy's arm shot out so fast that Dean was taken completely off-guard by the hand gripping the front of his leather jacket. Sam took a step forward, ready to defend his brother and Dean prepared to place a well aimed right hook to the guide's jaw if he tried anything, but only another second passed before Roy was letting go of Dean and pointing downwards. There in the grass, slightly obscured by leaves, was a bear trap. Roy raised an eyebrow at Dean and then marched on. Dean was careful to step around the trap, trying to laugh it off. "It's a bear trap" he announced unnecessarily.
"Hey." Hayley quickened her pace until she was even with Dean, letting Ben and Sam pass both of them. "What's going on? You're not a ranger." Dean opened his mouth to deny this but she spoke over him, listing her evidence. "You brought one duffel bag between the two of you, you didn't pack provisions, you aren't dressed in proper hiking clothes...except for the boots...you aren't rangers" she repeated. "So who are you?"
Dean stopped walking and turned to face her. "Sam and I are brothers" he admitted. "And we're looking for our father. This is the last known place where he was...we just thought we'd look for him while you were looking for your brother...since we're all kind of in the same boat here."
Hayley's frosty expression thawed. "You could have just told me that in the first place." "Well I'm telling you now." Dean began walking again, taking measured steps that kept him even with Hayley. "Besides...this is probably the most honest I've been with a woman...like, ever." He pulled a giant bag of peanut M&Ms from his jacket pocket and waved them at her. "And who said I didn't bring provisions?" He flashed her a quick grin and sped up, but not before he saw the returning smile.
