"Go Back" was a phrase that Dean pretended not to be very familiar with, and while he didn't swim out any farther, he waited until the Sheriff was equal with him in the water before beginning to backpedal himself, kicking his feet a lot to keep the kelpie at bay. He staggered out of the water and collapsed onto the sand, breathing deeply to refill his lungs with air.
Sam knelt between his brother and the Sheriff, making sure they were both alright. When he was assured that there was no permanent injury, he gave Dean a pinched smile. "Good plan." Dean struggled up onto one elbow and used his other hand to smack his brother across the back of his head; an action that was no uncommon between the two brothers. "Shut up."
Obviously, they were going to have to think of another plan.

As it turned out, they didn't really have much time to think up another plan. The creature surged up out of the water, oozing black slime from a hole in its face. Like Justine had said, it was mad. It was very mad. And now, it looked less like a horse and more like some Lovecraftian eldritch beast. Justine's eyes went wide. "Um, guys," she said. "Run?"

Unlike "Go Back", "Run" was a phrase that the boys were very familiar with following. Sam held out one arm and Dean grabbed onto it, pulling himself into a standing position before letting go. "This way Sheriff" Dean called, waving with his blowtorch as a guide to get her away from the water's edge. The farther away from the water they got, the less dangerous this thing was.
