ooc; SEASON ONE. EPISODE THIRTEEN.
The brothers were waiting for the Impala to finish filling with gas. Sam was scanning a map, trying to figure out how they could get to Pennsylvania as quickly as possible, while Dean was listening to a voicemail on his phone. Sam finally closed up the paper with a triumphant smile. "I finally figured out how we can get around that detour. We should be able to make it to Pennsylvania in a few hours." Dean snapped his phone closed and stuffed it into an outer jacket pocket. "Change of plans. We're not going to Pennsylvania, we're going to Ohio." Sam blinked. "Ohio? Dean, that's in the other direction." Dean pulled the gas nozzle free and closed up the tank. "I know which direction Ohio is in Sam. Just because I didn't go to college, and I have a GED rather than a high school diploma doesn't mean I'm an idiot." "I wasn't saying"- "We're going to Ohio to help an old friend of mine named Cassie. Her father died last night and she thinks it might be our kind of thing" he explained, opening the driver's side door and getting in. Sam got into the passenger side seat and they were off.
After taking a minute to reorganize his thoughts, Sam peeked at Dean out of the corner of one eye. "So...an old friend?" "Yes." Dean kept his eyes straight. "And when you say an old friend you mean..." Sam was fishing. He clearly wanted to know if Dean had slept with her or not but he wasn't going to cooperate as was evident by his deadpan reply of: "A friend who isn't new." Sam rolled his eyes before trying again. "And her name is Cassie, you said, right?" Dean nodded, his eyes still forward. "And..." "And what Sam?" Dean's tone was starting to get edgy. "What's the story with you two? How did you meet her?" "Dad and I were working a job around her area. We met. We went out a couple of weeks. End of story." Dean had yet to remove his eyes from the road. "Wait...you went out for a couple of weeks? You mean you actually went out with someone for more than just a night??" Sam's surprise was extremely evident. Dean continued to keep his focus straight ahead as he nodded without emotion. "So like you actually dated someone?" Dean finally looked at his brother in exasperation. "Am I speaking a language other than English here? Yes, I dated someone. Yes it was for more than a night." Sam changed the subject quickly. "By the way...you said she thought her dad dying was our kind of thing...how does she know what our kind of thing is?" Dean's focus was back on the road again. "You told her didn't you? Our big family secret. Rule number one. For a year and a half, I do nothing but lie to Jess...it's probably a big part of what got her killed...and then you go out with some random chick for two weeks and you tell her?!" Dean remained silent. Sam grew impatient and snapped, "DEAN!"
The older Winchester's tone was mechanical. "Yeah, that about sums it up."
