“Vince, hit the showers,” came Tobias’s voice as he paused at the door before leaving. Vincent couldn’t help but roll his eyes at his adoptive father’s sports metaphor. He was always doing stuff like that to try to get Vincent to lighten up. It never worked, though. Vincent didn’t like to lower his guard even to allow himself a smile or a laugh. Considering what he’d done in the past when he lowered his guard, it would be stupid and selfish of him to relax. “I’m fine, Tobias. Go home, you’ve been here since four this morning,” he said, looking up from pouring a cup of coffee for a customer to glance at the middle aged man, standing at the door.
It was evident that Tobias didn’t want to leave. He was always trying to get Vincent to go home or spend his time doing something besides working at the diner. Vincent appreciated his concern, but he didn’t want to go home and he didn’t want to spend his time doing something fun. Well, he did, but he didn’t want to allow himself to do something like that. He didn’t deserve to have fun and he didn’t deserve to relax. Tobias opened his mouth, as if about to retort, but huffed out an annoyed sigh before muttering good night and leaving Vincent in charge of the diner.
Feeling bad that he had annoyed Tobias so much, he returned to the front counter, sliding the fresh cup of coffee to the customer in front of him – whom he could only assume was a student, judging by the way he had several books and papers strewn about him on the counter. Vincent raised his head when the bell above the door rang, announcing another arrival into the diner. “Hi, what can I get you?” he asked, moving down the counter, closer to where the young woman was standing.
Ooc: I hope this was alright! Let me know if it isn’t. ^^
