ooc; SEASON FOUR. EPISODE NINETEEN.

Sam perched up against the Impala's hood, brushing his teeth. It was probably somewhere around seven in the morning and they'd cruised up to the side of the lake they were next to currently and parked for the night around two. Dean was still sleeping in the front seat, stretched out with his back and shoulders resting against the door. Sam spat a mouthful of toothpaste and saliva into the nearby bushes. The sound of Dean stirring behind him met his ears and he twisted around slightly just in time to see Dean nearly being dumped onto the ground as he opened the door. "Morning." He grinned. "How'd you sleep?" Dean stretched out his back, making a face. "How do you think?" Moving past this pretty quickly, he yawned and slammed the door. "I'm starving. Let's get breakfast." Sam looked left and then right, seeing nothing but water and pavement. "Where? We're like two hours from anything" he pointed out, earning a slight pout from Dean, accompanied by his whine of, "but I'm hungry now." Sam rolled his eyes. "I think there's still half a sandwich in the back seat" he remembered, tucking his toothbrush away back in his toiletries kit and moving around to leave it in the trunk where it belonged.

Dean meanwhile was sniffing at the sandwich remains. "It's tuna" he complained. "You can always wait until we get to a breakfast place" Sam pointed out, laughing at the face made in reply.

"Then I guess it's tuna."

Dean gave the bagged sandwich a disheartened look, then nibbled at the crust. Deciding it wasn't too bad and would at least quell some of his gnawing hunger, Dean took a big bite. And it was then that a phone somewhere in his general vicinity started ringing. Dean tossed the rest of the sandwich into the back seat through the open window, then rummaged around in the glove compartment while chewing and swallowing his bite. "Isn't that Dad's phone" Sam questioned, pointing at the ringing culprit that Dean had finally managed to extract. Dean shrugged and nodded, flipping the phone open and placing it to one ear. "Hello?" "Uh, is this John" a young male's voice asked hesitantly. "He can't come to the phone" was Dean's stiff answer which was not by any stretch of the imagination a lie. John certainly couldn't come to the phone. "Can I help you?" "No no no—I really—I need to talk to John" the caller insisted, sounding almost worried. "This is Adam Milligan. He knows me." Dean sighed gruffly. "Well, sorry to be the one to break this to you, pal, but John died more than two years ago."

There was a shocked silence, followed by a small sort of gasping noise. "Who is this" Dean demanded in curious hindsight. There was a dramatic pause and then finally Adam swallowed hard and announced: "I'm his son."

"Dean, look, best I can tell, Adam Milligan is real" Sam insisted, following his brother as Dean gathered a few things from the Impala's trunk, parked outside of some kind of small town diner where they'd agreed to meet this Adam person for a late lunch. Dean tucked a set of pure silver dining utensils wrapped in a linen cloth into an inner jacket pocket along with a flask of holy water and his favorite gun while Sam read from a piece of paper. "Um, born September twenty-ninth, 1990 to Kate Milligan. No father listed on the birth certificate. He's an Eagle Scout, graduated from high school with honors...and currently goes to the University of Wisconsin, biology major, pre-med..." Dean slid Ruby's knife into his belt, then closed the trunk with a slam. "Dean? You listening?" "This is a trap" Dean insisted darkly, pocketing the Impala's keys and brushing past Sam. He still couldn't believe that a monster would stoop so low as to pretend to be their long lost brother just to get at them. And using their father to do so...well Dean would make sure they paid for that.

He found the three of them a nice quiet table in the back, making sure that there was only one place setting on the side Adam would be sitting on. Sam took a seat on the side with two chairs and dropped John's journal onto the table with a thump. "Dean, I'm telling you, the kid checks out." "Great, so he's an actual person on the planet Earth" Dean wisecracked. "Sucks he's got a demon in him." A smiling blond waitress with the name 'Denise' on her nametag came wandering over. "Hi. Welcome to Cousin Oliver's" she greeted them, holding two menus. "Can I"- "We're actually waiting for someone" Dean interrupted, eyes on the door. Denise, annoyed with Dean's inconsiderate attitude, simply dropped the menus onto the table and stalking away. "Thank you" Sam called after her retreating form, shooting Dean a pointed look of exasperation. Dean said nothing, simply reached across the table to pick up Adam's water glass, then dump its contents into the bush behind him. Sam looked baffled. "Dude, what are you"- Still ignoring him, on a one track mind, Dean pulled the flask of holy water from his jacket and re-filled the glass. Sam's confusion lifted slightly. "Holy water?" "Yep." Dean placed the glass back on Adam's side of the table and replaced the flask in his inner jacket pocket. "One sip of Jesus juice, and this evil bitch is gonna be in a world of hurt." "What if he's not a demon" Sam pointed out rationally. But Dean was already one step ahead of this question, pulling the linen cloth from his pocket next. "Then he is a shapeshifter." "Hence the silver" Sam realized as Dean quickly laid a pure silver fork and knife out on Adam's napkin, tossing the cheap restaurant utensils into the bush as well. "Look, either way, this thing is gonna bleed" Dean promised darkly, voicing his earlier thoughts. "I mean, using Dad as bait? That's the last mistake of its short, pitiful life."

Sam looked away with a funny expression. Dean finally paused in his maniacal monster-sabotaging plans to look Sam's direction. "What?" Sam sighed almost patronizingly as he found Dean's stare with his own. "Dean...listen. There's an entry in Dad's journal." He flipped through the pages for a second until landing on the one he was after and placed one finger on the date. "From January of 1990, saying he's headed to Minnesota to check out a case. That's, roughly, oh, I don't know, about nine months before the kid was born." "Coincidence" Dean insisted flatly. "Coincidence??" Sam flipped another page in the journal. "Next two pages of the journal—torn out." Dean stared down at the frayed page edges for a few seconds than up to Sam incredulously. "You're not actually buying this, are you??" Sam held up his hands. "Look, man, I don't want to believe it either, I'm just saying it's possible. I mean, Dad would be gone for weeks at a time, and he wasn't exactly a monk." Sam closed the journal, slipping it into an inner jacket pocket with a shrug. "Think about it...a hunter rolls into town, kills a monster, saves the girl...sometimes the girl's grateful." Dean knew how true this was from his own experiences but he didn't need Sam to be pointing it out in this particular scenario. He shuddered. "Well, now I’m thinking about Dad's sex. Stop talking."

The door to the restaurant chimed just then and a young man walked in, with a backpack slung over one shoulder. "Adam" Sam called over curiously, lifting a hand. Adam turned to face them, looking a little lost. "You Sam?" "Yeah." Sam nodded in confirmation, then inclined his head at the older Winchester. "This is Dean." Adam nodded in greeting to both of them, sinking into the table's third, strategically placed chair and letting his backpack rest on the ground at his feet. "So um...how did you know my dad?" "Uh, we worked together" Sam lied instantly, and Dean nodded his agreement. Adam seemed to buy it, nodding slowly. "How did he die?" "On the job" Sam filled in automatically. Adam looked majorly confused. "He was a mechanic, right?" Dean set his jaw tightly, not really in the mood for all this small talk.

"A car fell on him."

Dean, now aware that his brother was trapped alone with a monster rather than actual Adam, redoubled his efforts to get the hell out of there. He scoured every inch of that place for another exit and just when he was about to give up, he tilted his head backwards and happened to notice that the window high above his head was stain-glass. Which meant it was breakable.

So he painstakingly stacked three coffins on top of each other, then broke a long piece of metal off of one of their lids and climbed up to the top of his pile where he used the pole to shatter the window. Then, after brushing a few shards of glass from his shoulders, Dean used the metal pole to help swing himself up and out of the newly created hole in the ceiling. He arrived on the scene in time to hear Adam's last words. "Hey" he shouted loudly, stepping into the room and firing a bullet straight through Adam's chest, causing him to fly backwards and hit the far wall. "Dean, they're ghouls" Sam managed to gasp out. With this information in hand, Dean aimed his gun at the approaching Kate and took her head off with one excellently placed shot. "Which means head shot" Dean concluded aloud.

Just then Adam, who had not been victim to a head shot and therefore was not dead, pounced on Dean, causing him to drop the gun. The two of them fell hard to the ground, rolling a few times. Dean tried to punch Adam in the face. Adam avoided it. Adam tried to punch Dean in the face. Dean avoided it. They scuffled for a few more minutes before Dean was able to gain the upper hand, pinning Adam to the floor by kneeling on his chest and bashing his head in with the heaviest object in his reach which was a solid pewter vase. After a few punishing blows, Adam was done trying to resist and after a few more, he was just plain done.

Silence fell. Dean tossed the bloodied vase aside, getting slowly to his feet. "Dean" came Sam's desperate cry from the table, startling Dean from his deep trance-like stare at Adam's corpse. Hurrying over to his brother's side, grabbing a few dish towels along the way, he used his pocket knife to slice through the ropes, then helped Sam into a sitting position. "Here you go" he soothed, placing a towel over each arm and pressing down tightly. "It's ok. Keep pressure on those." Sam winced, doing as he was told. "Thanks" he whispered gratefully. Dean smiled with brotherly affection. "That's what family's for, right?"

The next day, after Sam had time to heal a little, the brothers took Adam's corpse from the room at the end of the tunnel and drove it out to a clearing in the nearest woods where they set up a pyre of logs and balanced him on top, wrapped in sheets. "You sure we should do this" Sam wondered. Dean opened a bottle of lighter fluid and began to sprinkle it liberally across the pyre. "Ghouls didn't fake those pictures" he pointed out somberly. "They didn't fake Dad's journal either. Adam was our brother" he finally had to admit. "He died like a hunter. He deserves to go out like one." "Maybe we can bring him back" Sam suggested quietly. "Get a hold of Cas, call in a favor or something." "No, Adam's in a better place" Dean countered, capping the lighter bottle and pulling out a matchbox next. Striking it quickly against one of the logs to get it lit, he then tossed the whole thing onto the pile, watching intensely as Adam's body went up in flames. "You know, I finally get why you and Dad butted heads so much" he said after a minute, addressing Sam without looking at him. "You two were practically the same person." He could feel Sam's gaze on him and still stared straight ahead, elaborating his previous comment. "I mean, I worshipped the guy, you know? I dressed like him, I acted like him, I even listen to the same music. But you were more like him than I will ever be. And I see that now."

"I'll take that as a compliment" Sam finally said. Dean stared out over the lapping flames expressionlessly.

"You take it any way you want."
