ooc; SEASON FOUR. EPISODE FOUR.
"Where's Lilith?" Sam and Ruby had been working on the captured demon for going on two hours now. He was soaked with holy water. "Kiss my ass" he snarled, shaking in his bindings, his eyes flicking black and then back to normal. Sam smiled calmly. "I'd watch myself if I were you." The demon's lips twitched. "Why? Huh? Because you're Sam Winchester, Mr. Big Hero? And yet here you are, slutting around with some demon." He gave Ruby a once over, sneering. "Real hero." "Shut your mouth" Sam warned. "Tell me about those monhs without your brother" the demon taunted, ignoring the warning. "About all the things you and this demon bitch do in the dark. Huh? Tell me, hero." Sam, whose blood was boiling by now, felt his fists clenching at his sides.
Slowly uncurling one of them, he began to raise it in front of him, closing both eyes and concentrating. The demon began to cough up black smoke, shaking violently until the process came to a close, the demon smoke being sucked down through the floor out of sight. Sam opened his eyes, breathing heavily, trying to get himself back under control. Without saying a word, he moved forward, kneeling beside the man and touching his neck, feeling for a pulse. Which, while it was faint, was definitely still there. He exhaled in relief and smiled up at Ruby, giving her silent confirmation that the man was alive. "How'd it feel" Ruby wanted to know. "Good" Sam enthused, beginning to untie the unconscious man. "No more headaches." Ruby looked impressed. "None? That's good." As Sam unwound the final rope, the man began to stir. For a minute, he looked panicked and unsure of what was going on. Sam helped him to his feet carefully. "Hey, hey. I got you. It's all right" he assured him.
Halfway to the warehouse door, it opened. For maybe a millisecond Sam assumed Ruby had used powers to open it so Sam wouldn't have to let go of the man's arm around his shoulder. But then Dean was stepping through the open doorway, looking incredibly pissed off. Sam froze. "So..." Dean crossed his arms. "Anything you wanna tell me, Sam?" Sam's brain was racing at 100 miles a second, trying and failing to come up with something to say that might lessen the thundercloud covering his brother's face a fraction. "Dean, hold on, okay" he finally blurted out, trying to keep his tone calm. "Just let me"- Dean held up his hands like a traffic cop, cutting Sam off. "You gonna say, "let me explain"? You're gonna explain this??" He jerked his head in Ruby's direction. "How about this? Why don't you start with who she is, and what the hell is she doing here?" He speared Sam with a hard look, waiting.
Sam hesitated. He wasn't 100% ruling out the possibility that if he actually said the word 'Ruby', Dean would flatten him. It was certainly a direction this situation could take, what with the ominous look on his brother's face at that very moment. He wasn't sure he'd ever seen Dean that angry. However, before he could decide for certain if he was going to lie about Ruby's identity, she piped up very unhelpfully with a semi-amused, "It's good to see you again, Dean." And it didn't take more than a second for it to click. "Ruby?" Dean's eyes widened marginally, looking from Sam to Ruby and then back to Sam. "Is that Ruby?" Sam couldn't get his vocal chords to work properly. Instead he simply stood there, opening and closing his mouth a few times. But apparently that was enough of an answer for Dean because in the next second, he was charging, using Ruby's knife to pin her to the wall. "Dean! Don't!" In alarm, Sam helped the injured, half-conscious man back into the chair he'd helped him vacate earlier, and rushed for his brother. They grappled for the knife for a few seconds until Sam was able to wrestle in free. In retaliation, Dean grabbed Sam by the collar of his outer-shirt and slammed him into the wall, forcing him to drop the knife with a clatter. Ruby joined the fray again, grabbing Dean by the shoulders and pulling him off of Sam before swinging him around and pinning him to the opposite wall, locking him in a choke-hold with one hand. "Ruby! Stop it" Sam ordered sharply.
Ruby hesitated for another minute, her hand still firmly locked around Dean's throat, the two of them glaring daggers at each other. Then she finally released him, letting him collapse to the ground, one hand going to massage his throat. Straightening, Dean glowered at her. "Well, aren't you an obedient little bitch." Sam could see Ruby's tensing. It couldn't be plainer she was itching to put Dean down. "Ruby." He waited until she'd finally broken eye contact with Dean to look his way before finishing with a gesture at the prior meatsuit. "Ruby, he's hurt. Go." Ruby nodded in understanding and eased the man's arm around her shoulders, helping him into a standing position. "Where the hell do you think you're going" Dean demanded harshly, blocking her path. "The ER... unless you want to go another round first" she mocked. Sam kept his eyes on Dean, tensing, ready to intervene again if he had to, but the older Winchester remained silent and stationary, allowing Ruby to help the man past. Once they were gone, Sam steeled himself for an explosion from Dean. But it didn't come.
Instead, Dean pivoted on one heel and headed for the exit. Sam furrowed his brow and called after him. "Dean." No reaction. Beginning to follow him, Sam tried again a bit louder.
"Dean!"
