ooc; SEASON THREE. EPISODE SIXTEEN.

Sam finished his phone call with Bobby outside of the small log cabin he and Dean were squatting in, before returning to where he'd left his brother researching hellhounds in the living room. Dean was sitting straight as a board in his chair, looking warily around the room. Sam eyed him curiously. "Dig up anything good?" Dean slammed closed the book on the table in front of him and rubbed at his eyes tiredly. "No. Nothing good." Sam grinned. "Well, Bobby has. Finally." Dean looked interested. "Yeah?" "Yeah. A way to find Lilith." Sam spat out the name. With yellow-eyes dead, she was his new least favorite demon. Dean gave a strained smile, glancing at his watch. "Oh. With just uh...thirty hours to go. Good." He paused, looking restless, and then threw out, "hey, why don't we just make a TJ-run, yeah? You know... some senoritas, cervezas, uh, we could... What's Spanish for "donkey show"?" Sam allowed half a smile. "So if we do save you... Let's never do that."

Dean looked like he was trying to smile in agreement but mostly it just looked like a grimace by this point. Sam's own smile faded. "Hey Dean..." He bit his lip, moving closer and kneeling down beside his brother. "Look, we're cutting it close, I know. But we're gonna get this done. I don't care what it takes, Dean. You're not gonna go to hell. I'm not gonna let you" he declared fiercely. Dean glanced sideways at him and Sam could read the uncertainty and fear in his expression. "I swear." He nodded confidently.

"Everything's gonna be okay."

When Bobby arrived at the cabin, he was toting a large wooden tracking device with three legs coming out from a glass or crystal ball at the top. The ball had a flat, metal piece going around it with symbols on it. Further down the legs there was another metal piece, only bigger. And hanging from the ball was a pendulum device with a sharp end so that it can pinpoint a specific location. The boys got out a map of the US, unfolded it and spread it out on a table in the living room. Bobby placed the tracking device on top of it. "So you need a name, that's the whole kit and caboodle. With the right name, right ritual, ain't nothing you can't suss out." "Like the town Lilith's in" Sam surmised. "Kid, when I get done, we'll know the street" Bobby confirmed, nodding with confidence and tapping the pendulum so that it began swinging side to side slowly. He began reciting something in latin, concentrating hard. The pendulum began to swing faster and faster until suddenly, it came to a complete stop, the sharp end pointing to "New Harmony, Indiana" which Bobby announced aloud.

"Alright." Sam nodded, taking a step towards the door. "Let's go." Dean put up his hands. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. Let's holster it up there, Tex." Sam stared at him. "What's the problem?" Dean's jaw unhinged. "What's the problem? Come on, where do I begin?" He held up one hand and began listing the points on his fingers. "I mean, first of all, we don't even know if Lilith holds my deal. We're going off of Bela's intel. Now when that bitch breathes, the air comes out crooked! Okay. Second, even if we could get to Lilith, we have no way to gank her. And third, isn't this the same Lilith that wants your giant head on a pike?" He gave Sam a pointed glare. "Should I continue?" "Well ain't you just bringing down the room" Bobby commented dryly. "It's a gift" Dean returned automatically, with a straight face.

"Then what are we supposed to do, Dean" Sam challenged in frustration. "Just 'cause I gotta die doesn't mean both of you have to, okay" Dean pointed out calmly. "Either we go in smart or we don't go in at all." Sam crossed his arms. "Okay, fine. If that's the case I have the answer." His tone suggested he'd been waiting for a good opening for whatever he wanted to say next and Dean had just delivered it to him. Dean squinted at him. "You do?" "Yeah. A sure-fire way to confirm it's Lilith and a way to get us a bona fide demon-killing ginsu." Dean didn't need more than that to know what Sam's plan was. "Damn it, Sam, no" he growled, turning away. "We're so past arguing about this" Sam insisted flatly. "Dean, I am summoning Ruby." Dean whirled around to face him again, his jaw set. "The hell you are! We have enough problems as it is." Sam didn't back down. "Exactly. We've got no time and no choice either." Dean got right up in his brother's face. "Come on man, she is the Miss Universe of lying skanks, okay! She told you that she could save me, huh – lie. She seems to know everything about Lilith but forgot to mention, oh right – Lilith owns my soul!"

Sam shrugged. "Okay, fine. She's a liar. But she's still got that knife." "For all we know, she works for Lilith" Dean snapped. "Then give me another option, Dean. I mean, tell me what else" Sam insisted desperately. "Sam's right" Bobby piped up with quietly. Feeling outnumbered and overwhelmed, Dean raised his voice to its loudest yet with a great deal of finality. "NO! DAMN IT!!" The other two stared at him, stunned into silence. Forcing himself to calm down now that he had Bobby and Sam's full attention, his next sentence was much quieter, yet just as firm. "Just no. We are not gonna make the same mistakes all over again." Sam and Bobby exchanged a look with each other, remaining silent. "You guys wanna save me, find something else" Dean muttered, taking a seat at the table with a brooding expression.

After a few seconds of nobody saying anything or even really looking at each other, Bobby reached for his jacket. "Where are you going, Bobby" Sam asked wearily. Bobby sighed reluctantly. "I guess to find something else." Dean nodded approvingly. At least Bobby was listening to him. But it didn't much matter.

Because he knew Sam wouldn't.

"Ad construgendum ad ligandum eos pariter Et solvendum." Sam knelt in the middle of the cabin's basement beside a chalk-drawn triangle with multiple bizarre looking symbols drawn in the center. A lit candle was flickering at each point of the triangle and in the dead center was a bowl of some kind of dry green substance. In his hands was a matchbox. He didn't care what Dean said. He'd promised to save his brother no matter what. Well...this was a no matter what circumstance if he'd ever seen one. "Et ad congregantum eos coram me" he finished the latin, striking a match and dropping it into the bowl with a flourish.

It took a few seconds. "You know, phones work too" Ruby announced from her position leaning up against the open doorway with a smirk. Sam glared at her, not finding the comment cute. She pushed off of the door and approached him. "So. You called?" "Did you know" he asked tightly. Ruby raised an eyebrow. "Um – gonna need a tiny bit more." A muscle ticked in Sam's jaw. "About Dean's deal. That Lilith holds the contract." "Yes" she answered simply. Sam blinked, outraged. "And… what? You didn't think that was important?" Ruby shrugged. "You weren't ready." Sam frowned. "For what?" "If I told you, you two yahoos would have just charged after her half-cocked and Lilith would have peeled the meat from your pretty, pretty faces" Ruby pointed out bluntly. Sam straightened up, his shoulders stiff with determination. "Well, we're ready now. And I want your knife." Ruby began to circle him slowly, looking impressed. "You're right about one thing. You are ready. And now's the time, too. Lilith's guard's down." "Is that so" Sam remarked tightly. "She's on shore-leave" Ruby elaborated. "A little R&R." Sam looked confused. "What the hell's that mean?" "Trust me, you don't wanna know." Ruby returned to stand in front of Sam, making a face. "You didn't lose those hex bags I gave you?" "We got 'em" Sam confirmed. Ruby nodded, pleased. "Good. Then she won't sense that you're coming." Sam held out one hand. "So you'll give us the knife?" "No."

Sam felt like everything they'd just talked about had been a big waste of time. "But you just said–" "You wanna charge in with one little pigsticker" Ruby interrupted incredulously. "It's a waste of a true-blue window. Like getting Hitler with that exploding briefcase. Forget it." Sam was starting to get more than a little ticked off with her. "Ok, then how" he snapped angrily. Ruby crossed her arms. "I know how to save your brother, Sam." Sam wasn't falling for that again. "No, you don't! You told Dean you couldn't! You've been lying to me all along, so just give me your damn knife!" "You're not the one I've been lying to" Ruby countered quietly. "Oh, so you can save him" Sam challenged sarcastically, unsurprised by her "No" that followed. But he was very surprised by what she finished with. "But you can." Caught off-guard, he faltered. "W-what?" "Sam, you've got some God-given talent" Ruby praised with conviction. Her lips twitched. "Well, not "God"-given but you get the gist." Sam shook his head stubbornly. "All that psychic crap? No. That's gone ever since Yellow-Eyes died." "Not gone, dormant" Ruby insisted, moving closer. "And not just visions either. Why do you think Lilith is so scared of you?" "Right" Sam snorted. "She's scared of me." Ruby tilted her head to the side, studying him carefully. "If you wanted, you could wipe her off the map without moving a muscle." Sam narrowed his eyes at her. "I don't believe you." "It's the truth" she insisted calmly. Sam tried not to let himself consider her words too seriously. "And you decided to tell me this just now?" Ruby chuckled. "Um... demon" she pointed out, flicking her eyes black briefly and then returning them to their normal color. "Manipulative's kinda in the job description, you know? Besides, fact is, is that you would have never considered it. Not until you were –" "Desperate enough" Sam finished for her somberly.

They shared a long look before Ruby started in again. "You don't like being different" she observed. "You hate the way Dean looks at you sometimes. Like you're some kind of sideshow freak." Sam looked off to one side, chewing the inside of his cheek to refrain from commenting. Ruby kept going. "Well suck it up because we've got a lot of ground to cover, and we've gotta do it fast. But we can do it." Sam locked eyes with Ruby in deep contemplation, running through the pros and cons in his head as quickly as he could drum them up. Ruby seemed to sense he was still on the fence, and pushed harder. "Look. Call me a bitch, hate me all you want, but I have never lied to you, Sam. Not ever. And I'm telling you. You... can save your brother, and I can show you how." Sam took a deep breath. But before he could reach a final decision, Dean's voice was echoing through the room. "So that's you, huh? Our slutty little Yoda." He stepped through the door behind Ruby, looking none too pleased with either her or Sam. "Dean" Ruby greeted him without turning around.

"Charming as ever."

Dean sauntered closer. "I knew you'd show up" he informed the pair of them. "Because I knew Sam wouldn't listen." He threw his brother a dirty look. Sam at least had the good graces to look guilty whether or not he actually felt that way. "But you're not gonna teach him anything, you understand me" he went on grimly. "Over my dead body." "Sure, I'll just wait a few hours then" Ruby quipped. Dean was not amused. "What you are gonna do is give me that knife" he instructed heatedly. "And then you can just go crawl back into whatever slop you came from and never bother me or my brother again. Are we clear?" Ruby crossed her arms stubbornly. "Your brother is carrying a bomb inside of him and we'd be stupid not to use it." Sam tried to interrupt. "Dean, look, just hold on for one"- Without looking at him, Dean snapped, "Sam! Don't." Now he looked at him. "Come on man, what, are you blind? Can't you see that this is a trick? She wants you to give into this whole demonic psychic whatever, okay. I mean hell, she probably wants you to become her little anti-christ Super Star."

"That's not true" Ruby argued furiously. "I want Lilith dead. That's all." "Why" Dean challenged. "I've told you why!" "Oh, right, yeah" Dean recalled in a mocking tone. "Because you were human once and you liked kittens and long walks on the beach." Ruby glared. "You know, I am so sick of proving myself to you. You wanna save yourself, this is how. You dumb, spineless dick." She spat the insult at him, looking livid. Dean looked at her for a minute expressionlessly, without saying a word, then turned as if to leave. At the last second, he wheeled back around and landed a hard right hook on her jaw. Ruby stumbled backwards, surprised. When she lifted one hand to her lip and then lowered it to see a trickle of blood there, she lost it. "Ruby, hey" Sam shouted in alarm as Ruby punched Dean twice in rapid succession in the face. Now it was Dean's turn to stumble backwards. Sam took a step forward to try and intervene but Ruby simply waved one hand, sending him backwards to hit the nearest wall and slide to the floor, winded. Then she rounded on Dean again, kneeing him in the stomach violently, tossing him down to the ground and kicking him in the stomach.

Dean tried to get back to his feet but Ruby advanced on him, kicking him in the stomach once again, the momentum sending him rolling over in a complete circle, groaning. Ruby, still mad as hell, walked right over to him, grabbed him by the shoulders, and hauled him to his feet, only to head-butt him back down to the ground. She stood over him, with crossed arms, as Dean spat blood from his mouth and staggered to his feet, a grin firmly in place, despite his whole body hurting. She narrowed her eyes. "The hell are you grinning at?" He held up her demon-killing knife triumphantly, taking a measured step backwards. "Missing something?" "I'll kill you, you son of a bitch" she growled, taking a few threatening steps forward and stopping. After trying twice more to continue her attack and both times seeming to run into an invisible barrier, she finally allowed her eyes to travel upwards, taking in the spray-painted devil's trap on the ceiling. She lowered her eyes to meet Dean's again, looking pissed. Dean's smile read "gotcha" loud and clear. He slid the knife into his belt. "Like I said...I knew you'd come."

He turned and headed for Sam who was still on the floor, looking dazed from not only his contact with the wall, but also the turn of events. Holding out one hand, he helped his brother into a standing position before heading for the stairs, using the back of one hand to wipe blood from his split lip. "Wait" Ruby called out anxiously. "You're just gonna leave me here?" Dean ignored her. "Let's go Sam." "Oh, oh you – so you're just too stupid to live, is that it" Ruby shouted at his retreating back as the boys climbed the stairs. "Then fine! You deserve hell! I wish I could be there, Dean" she ranted. "I wish I could smell the flesh sizzle off your bones! I WISH I COULD BE THERE TO HEAR YOU SCREAM!!" "And I wish you'd shut your pie hole, but we don't always get what we want" Dean countered tonelessly before slamming the basement door.

"We're just gonna let Ruby rot down there" Sam questioned ten minutes later as they packed up. Dean glanced at him briefly and then went back to double checking his duffel bag. "That's the idea." Sam hesitated and then tried a different approach. "Dean, what if, uh... What if Ruby's right? What if I can take out Lilith?" Dean looked up again, staring incredulously at his brother who squirmed uncomfortably. "Quit looking at me like that." Dean shook his head. "What, are you gonna give her the Carrie-stare and Lilith goes "poof"?" "I don't know what Ruby meant" Sam admitted. "You know, maybe we should just go ask her. If it will help-" "Sam, you wanted the knife – I got you the knife" Dean interrupted wearily. Sam exhaled in frustration. "Dean, just listen to me for a second. Last time Lilith snapped her fingers and put thirty demons on our ass, and all we got's one little knife? I mean, like you said, we go in smart or we don't go in at all." "Well, this ain't smart" Dean argued.

"We got one shot at this, Dean" Sam pointed out forcefully. "Just one. So if there's a sure-fire way then maybe we should at least talk about it." Dean approached his brother until they were only about two feet apart. "Sam. We are not gonna make the same mistake all over again" he insisted calmly. Sam looked confused. "You've said that already but what does it even mean?" Dean sighed. "Don't you see a pattern here? Dad's deal, my deal, now this? I mean every time one of us is – is – is up the creek the other is begging to sell their soul. That's all this is, man. Ruby's just jerking your chain down the road. You know what it's paved with and you know where it's going." He perched on the edge of the nearest table, picking up a shot-gun and checking to make sure it was loaded with rocksalt. "Dean." Sam perched on the table beside his brother, his tone gentle, yet confident at the same time. "What do you think is gonna happen? This is me, I can handle it. And if it'll save you..." Dean kept his focus on the saltgun. "Why even risk it?" Sam took the gun from Dean, setting it aside and locking eyes with him. "Because you're my brother. Because you did the same thing for me." "I know... and look how that turned out" Dean scoffed, trying to lighten the mood. It didn't work.

"All I'm saying..." He heard the catch in his own voice, stopped, drew in a deep breath and started over. "Sammy, all I'm saying is that you're my weak spot." He squeezed out a quick watery smile. "You are. And I'm yours." "You don't mean that" Sam whispered in a choked up voice. "We're… we're family." Dean nodded his agreement. "I know. And those evil sons of bitches know it too. I mean, what we'll do for each other, you know, how far we'll go? They're using it against us." Sam frowned. "So what? We just stop looking out for each other?" "No, we stop being martyrs, man." Dean pushed off of the desk into a standing position. "We – we – we stop spreading it for these demons. Making it easy for them." He pulled Ruby's knife from his belt and held it up, its tip glinting in the late afternoon sun. "We take this knife, and we go after Lilith our way. The way Dad taught us to. And if we go down... then we go down swinging." He watched Sam's expression carefully. "What do you think?" Sam looked down at the floor and then back up to Dean, a small smile creeping through. "I think you totally should have been jamming "Eye of the Tiger" right there." "Oh bite me" Dean returned, grinning. "I totally rehearsed that speech too."

Sam clapped Dean on the shoulder good-naturedly and they spent a few more minutes basking in the glow of the light-hearted atmosphere that little back-and-forth had brought them, before Sam was saying somberly, "So, Indiana, huh?" Dean placed Ruby's knife in his duffel bag and zipped it closed. "Yeah, where Lilith's on shore-leave." He glanced at Sam to make sure he understood that part right. Sam shrugged. "Yeah, I guess." "Tell me something." Dean frowned in genuine curiosity.

"What the hell does a demon do for fun?"

Sam believed Ruby when she'd told him he didn't want to know the answer to that question when he'd been the one to pose it. So instead of giving an answer to Dean, he clapped him on the shoulder again, picked up the packed duffel and headed for the car. He was trying really hard to keep it together as the hours ticked closer and closer to midnight. This was their one shot. Even if they messed up and somehow weren't killed by Lilith, they didn't have time for a do-over.

It was now or never.

Dean joined Sam in the car and started the engine. Or...to rephrase that, tried to start the engine. It gave a few sputtering noises that worried Dean immensely. Not only because his baby was acting funny, but because if they couldn't start the car, they couldn't get to Indiana to gank Lilith and keep his soul topside. "Where do you think you're going?" Bobby appeared outside Dean's door, peering in through the open car window at them. Both boys jumped a little at the sudden appearance. Bobby held up the Impala's distributor cap which he must have taken out earlier as a precautionary measure to keep something like this from happening. "We got the knife" Dean announced as he and Sam got out of the car, facing Bobby. "And you intend to use it without me." Bobby crossed his arms unhappily. "Do I look like a ditchable prom-date to you?" "No, Bobby. Of course not" Sam soothed at once. "This is about me... and Sam, ok" Dean stated. "This isn't your fight."

"The hell it isn't!!" Looking furious by Dean's words, Bobby marched closer, getting in his face. "Family don't end with blood, boy." He stared Dean down for a minute before crossing his arms knowingly. "Besides, you need me. You're playing wounded." "Bobby." Dean tried to interrupt but Bobby didn't let him. "Tell me, how many hallucinations have you had so far?" Sam's eyes jumped from Bobby to Dean, looking both confused and alarmed. Dean didn't bother to deny this. "How'd you know?" "Because that's what happens when you've got hellhounds on your ass" Bobby remarked, smiling slightly. "And because I'm smart." He tossed Dean the distributor cap. "I'll follow."

It wasn't a question.

"Hey Dean." Sam glanced over at his brother who'd been staring straight ahead out of the windshield for a few miles now with no expression. Dean flicked his eyes sideways briefly, taking in Sam's serious expression. "Yeah?" The younger Winchester swallowed hard. "You know if this doesn't uh... this doesn't go the way we want, I want you to know-" Dean held up the hand closer to Sam, cutting him off mid-speech. "No. No, no, no, no." Sam looked baffled. "No what?" Dean replaced that hand on the steering wheel, sparing a longer look for his brother this time. "No, you're not gonna bust out the misty good-bye speech, okay? If this is my last day on earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward." He nodded as though this was the most obvious dying wish on the planet. Sam looked off to the side, but not before Dean caught the glassy tint to his eyes. He had to do something fast. "You know what I do want" he threw out there cheerfully, reaching for the radio power button and pressing. Bon Jovi's "Wanted" came blaring through the speakers. Sam returned his focus to Dean, looking surprised by the music choice. "Bon Jovi?" Dean grinned. "Bon Jovi rocks, on occasion."

"And I walk these streets" he sang along. "A loaded six-string on my back. I play for keeps, cause I might not make it back." He nudged his brother in the arm with one elbow. "Come on Sam, you know the words." He smiled encouragingly, continuing to sing. "I've been everywhere." "Oh yeah" Sam sang quietly, looking a bit hesitant. "And I'm standing tall" Dean sang alone before Sam pitched in again. "I've seen a million faces, and I rocked 'em all. 'Cause I'm a cowboy. On a steel horse I ride. I'm wanted..." "WANTED" Sam hollered with the back-up singers, really getting into it. Dean glanced his way, smiling. "Dead or alive" they sang together. "Dead or alive" Sam repeated, singing the refrain for all he was worth, tipping his head back, grinning wildly. So he didn't see the way the smile started to slip and slide its way off of Dean's face as he looked straight ahead through the windshield once more, his heartbeat increasing every time the word 'dead' was sung. He hadn't realized until just about now how relevant this song truly was to his circumstances. It might not have been the best choice of music.

They were about an hour outside of New Harmony when a police car with flashing lights and a wailing siren came cruising up behind them. Sam glanced around the otherwise empty street. "We getting pulled over?" "I've got a busted tail-light" Dean replied, sighing, and pulling the Impala off to one side, putting her in park. "It's not like we're in a hurry or nothing." The police car came to a halt behind them and the officer slowly approached their vehicle. Dean rested his arm on the open window without looking up just yet. "Problem officer?" "Licence and registration, please." As Sam was handing Dean the proper documents...well, the proper fake documents...the officer continued to speak. "Do you realize you have a tail-light out sir?" Dean finally looked up and felt his stomach lurch. The police officer may have looked like a human on the outside, but the face staring back at Dean beneath the police officer meatsuit was no human. "Yes… yes sir. Uh… you know I've been meaning to… take care of that" he began politely. "As a matter of fact..." Without any warning, Dean flung the car door open, hitting the officer in the stomach and causing him to double over in surprise. Dean hopped from the car, and rushed the man, slamming one fist solidly into his jaw to disorient him further. "Dean!" Sam's jaw unhinged in surprise as he scrambled from the car as well.

Before Sam could get around the car to hold his brother back, Dean was pulling Ruby's knife from his belt and jamming it into the police officer demon's throat. There was a flash of yellow light radiating from deep within it and then he dropped like a stone in water to the ground at their feet. Bobby had finally caught up to them, pulling his car over behind the squad car and then jogging up with an expression of pure wonder. "What the hell just happened?" "Dean just killed a demon" Sam breathed in awe, turning to his brother. "How'd you know?" Still breathing heavily, Dean held Ruby's knife by one side in a slackened grip, looking worried. "I...I just knew. I could see its face. Its real face under that one." He shuddered.

"So what, now you're seeing demons" Sam asked ten minutes later as they covered the police car, which they'd driven further into the woods, with leafy branches, hiding it from plain sight. The dead police officer was stashed inside as well. "I've seen all kinds of things lately" Dean admitted. "But... nothing like this." Bobby grabbed another branch from the ground and added it to their growing pile. "Actually it's not all that crazy." Dean stared. "How's it not that crazy?" Bobby checked his watch. "Well you've got, just over five hours to go, right? You're piercing the veil, Dean. You're glimpsing the B side." Dean continued staring. "A little less new age-y please." Bobby tossed another branch onto the cop car and dusted off his hands, giving Dean a surly look. "You're almost hell's bitch. So, you can see hell's other bitches." Dean smiled humorlessly. "Thank you." "Well, actually it could come in pretty handy" Sam pointed out, taking a step back and observing their camouflage work. Dean kept a completely straight face. "Oh, well, I'm glad my doomed soul is good for something" he deadpanned.

Bobby nodded firmly. "Damn right it is. Lilith's probably got demons stashed all over town. We can't let them sound the alarm. If she knows we're here, we're dead before we've started." "Well, this is a terrific plan. I'm excited to be a part of it." Dean added a final branch to the car, his tone weighed down by heavy sarcasm. "Can we go, please?"

They were kind of on a deadline.

The house in question belonged to a family called the Freemonts. "It's the little girl" Dean announced, peering through a pair of binoculars at the living room window. Sam raised his own binoculars to see what she looked like. A blond haired kid, maybe ten or eleven years old was sitting at one end of the table. An old man, presumably her grandfather, sat at the other end of the table, his neck twisted in a very horrible way that left no doubt to anyone's imagination he was no longer living. Two other people, the girl's parents, were also sitting at the table, their postures rigid with fear. "Her face is awful" Dean finished with a slight grimace. Sam lowered his binoculars, making a move to step out from behind the bushes and approach the house. "Alright then, let’s go. We're wasting time." Dean shot out one hand to grab him by the sleeve. "Wait!" "For what" Sam whispered impatiently. "For it to kill the rest of them?"

"Yeah, and us too if we're not careful" Dean clarified, keeping a strong hold on his brother's arm, inclining his head. "Look. See the real go-getter mailman on the clock at nine PM?" Sam glanced at the mailman Dean was referring to who was sorting mail at the back of his truck parked outside of the house. "And Mr Rogers over there." Sam followed Dean's gaze next to an elderly man sitting in a chair by his window in the house next door. "Demons" he guessed with a sinking heart and Dean nodded grimly, finally releasing his hold on Sam's sleeve. Sam glanced from the house back to Dean, thinking this through, trying to arrive at a plan of action. "Ok, fine. We – we, we ninja pass those guys, sneak in..." "Then what" Dean snapped with a horrified expression. "Give a "Columbian necktie" to a ten year old girl? Come on!" "Look, Dean, I know it's awful" Sam agreed readily, hating himself for not being as tortured as he might once have been about this. "She's gotta be stopped, son" Bobby pointed out gently. "This isn't just about saving you, Dean" Sam went on seriously.

"This is about saving everybody."

Dean exhaled sharply, looking from Sam to Bobby and then back to Sam. "Dammit" he muttered, giving in, and gesturing for Sam to follow him. Bobby moved stealthily in the other direction. Handing Ruby's knife to Sam and waiting until he'd moved out of sight, Dean crept a few feet closer to the mailman, "accidentally" making a lot of noise to grab his attention. When the mail-demon looked up and spotted Dean, his eyes flicked black triumphantly. With a convincingly alarmed expression, Dean took a step backwards before turning and sprinting in the opposite direction, the demon hot on his heels.

Dean rounded the corner of the Freemont's house and immediately stepped off to one side. The demon was only a split second later but instead of finding Dean, he found Sam, who'd been waiting for the pair of them. The younger Winchester stepped forward, plunging Ruby's knife into the surprised demon's torso, killing him instantly with a blinding flash of yellow light. While Sam dislodged the red-tinged blade from the mailman's chest, Dean nodded, impressed, and then took off speed-walking in the opposite direction, keeping an eye out for other demons.

Apparently he didn't do a good enough job because one of them came up behind him suddenly, grabbing him and shoving him forwards into a nearby chainlink fence. "I'd like my knife back, please" Ruby hissed in his ear. "Or your neck snaps like a chicken bone." "He doesn't have it" Sam informed her, arriving in the nick of time and placing the aforementioned knife to Ruby's throat as proof. "Take it easy." Ruby released Dean, holding her hands up in surrender and taking a step backwards. Dean gave his sore shoulder a rub. "How the hell did you get out?" "What you don't know about me could fill a book" Ruby returned flatly. Dean lifted his eyes, preparing to glare at her and make some kind of rude comeback, but instead all that came out of his mouth was "whoa", his eyes widening marginally. "What?" Dean looked off to one side, unable to stomach looking directly at her anymore. "Nothing. I just – I couldn't see it before...but you are one ugly broad."

Ruby did not look amused. She ignored Dean, turning to Sam with one hand outstretched. "Sam, give me the knife before you hurt yourself." "You'll get it when this is over" Sam informed her, tightening his grip on the knife's handle. "It's already over" Ruby insisted, narrowing her eyes. "I gave you a way to save Dean, and you shot me down. Now it's too late. He's dead. And I'm not gonna let you die too." Dean did not appreciate the "he's dead" remark in the slightest. "Try and stop me, and I'll kill you" Sam threatened. "Bitch." "Hit me with your best shot, baby" Ruby challenged, throwing her arms out wide. At any other point, Dean would have been thrilled Sam was finally seeing Ruby as an enemy and was name calling and all that, but now was not really the time or place. "Hey guys" he interrupted, having caught sight of at least a dozen demons approaching with murderous expressions. "Have your little catfight later." Sam and Ruby followed his gaze, also noticing the demons. Sam's expression plainly read "oh crap". "So much for the element of surprise" Dean remarked with a wry smile. Sam began urging him and Ruby towards the Freemont's front door. "Go. Go. Run!" The three of them sprint as fast as all get out, launching themselves up the front porch steps and skidding to a halt in front of the door, which Sam knelt in front of with his lockpick kit. The demons kept approaching. Dean glanced around frantically. "Where the hell is Bobby?"

As Sam continued to scrabble with the lock, the first of the demons reached the Freemont's lawn. However, before they could set foot on it, the sprinkler system kicked into gear and that first demon, getting a face-full of the water, began screaming bloody murder, her skin smoking and sizzling. Dean began to smile. Now he understood what was taking Bobby so long. He'd turned the sprinkler-system-water into holy water, effectively creating a barrier between the street where the demons were and the house where they were. With a little less pressure on him, Sam was finally able to spring the lock open, allowing them entrance to the house. "You think Lilith knows we're here" Dean whispered, closing the door in their wake. "Probably" Ruby whispered back without bothering to sugarcoat it.

As they crept through the living room, Dean became aware of footsteps approaching from behind. Spinning quickly, he placed a hand over Mr. Freemont's mouth to keep him from shouting out. "Shh...we're here to help, ok" Dean assured him in a low voice. "I'm gonna move my hand, and we're gonna talk nice and quiet, ok?" Mr. Freemont nodded, his eyes wide. Dean lowered his hand. "Sir, where is your daughter" Sam asked urgently. "It's not... it's not her anymore" Mr. Freemont whispered tearfully. "Where is she" Sam repeated, nodding understandingly about the "it's not her" remark. "Upstairs. In her bedroom." Dean nodded urgently, keeping his voice low. "Okay, okay, okay. Listen to me. I want you to go downstairs to the basement. Put a line of salt at the door behind you. Do you understand me?" "Not without my wife" Mr. Freemont protested in panic. "Yes without your wife" Dean insisted. Mr. Freemont shook his head again stubbornly. "No." Dean stole a glance at Ruby and Sam and then brought his elbow suddenly up into Mr. Freemont's face, knocking him out easily and draping him over one shoulder.

They didn't have time for this.

Sam may have once been upset with his brother for knocking a guy's lights out with no warning, especially an innocent guy, but times were changing. They had an hour and a half left on the clock and standing here arguing with Mr. Freemont was not helping things move forward. It wasn't like the guy was seriously injured. He might have a bloody nose or black eye but at least he would be safe in the basement. Alive.

So as Dean headed down to the basement to dump his cargo, Sam and Ruby crept upstairs. Every muscle in Sam's body was on high alert. After reaching the top and seeing a door on each side of the hall, he and Ruby shared a look before splitting up, each picking a door. Behind the one Sam chose was a pink canopy bed with lace curtains. And behind the curtains lay Mrs. Freemont and the girl, who was sleeping peacefully. Mrs. Freemont however was wide awake, tearful and afraid. When she noticed Sam, and more importantly the knife he was wielding, her eyes widened in brief horror before inclining her head slightly and mouthing, "do it". Sam gripped the knife tighter. Mrs. Freemont nodded and mouthed "do it" again.

Sam lifted the knife above his head in determination but he still hesitated. No matter what Mrs. Freemont was mouthing, no matter how afraid she was, and no matter what he'd told Dean earlier, his conscience was gnawing at him. Stabbing a little girl, even with a monster in her, was just incredibly hard. A lot harder than he'd thought it would be, even with his desperation to save Dean. "DO IT" Mrs. Freemont mouthed one more time, in an almost audible whisper as the little girl began to stir. Sam knew he was running out of time. Exhaling deeply and steeling himself, he began to swing his arm down. Two things happened at exactly the same time. The little girl woke and began screaming and Dean appeared at Sam's side, grabbing his arm. "It's not her" Dean shouted, forcing Sam's arm down and speaking the next part in a relatively normal volume. "It's not in her anymore." "Mommy" the little girl sobbed and Mrs. Freemont gathered her in her arms, shushing her and kissing her forehead soothingly. "Mommy's got you" she whispered. Sam slackened his grip on the knife hanging in one hand by his side with a deep breath of relief. That could have been bad.

After he and Dean had secured the whole Freemont family in the salt-lined basement, they returned to the living room where they found Ruby waiting with crossed arms. "Well, I hate to be a "told you so"." Sam glanced at the clock on the mantle which showed them as having fifteen minutes left until midnight. "Where is she Ruby?" Ruby gave her head a faint shake. "I have no idea." Sam glanced out the front window anxiously. "Could she get past the sprinklers?" "At her paygrade she ain't sweating the holy water" Ruby snorted. Sam turned away from the window in desperation. "Alright you win. What do I have to do?" "What do you mean?" "To save Dean" he clarified. "What do you need me to do?" Dean came up behind Sam, grabbing his shoulder and trying to turn him. "What do you think you're doing?" "Just shut up for a second." Sam shook off Dean's hand, staying laser focused on Ruby. "You had your chance" Ruby reminded him. "You can't just flip a switch. We needed time." Sam felt his throat closing up dangerously. "Well, there's gotta be something" he insisted passionately, refusing to give up. "There's gotta be some way. Whatever it is, I'll do it." "Sam!" Dean grabbed him again, harder this time, and managed to spin him around so that the brothers were face to face. Sam felt the burning hot sensation of building tears making their presence. "I'm not gonna let you go to hell, Dean" he shouted feverishly. "Yes you are" Dean shouted back, dropping his hand from Sam's upper-arm and taking a step backwards calmly. "Yes you are" he repeated quietly with a sad smile. Sam stared at him wordlessly. Dean ran a hand over his face. "I'm sorry. I mean this is all my fault, I know that. But what you're doing, it's not gonna save me. It's only gonna kill you." "Then, what am I supposed to do?" Sam's voice was small. The first of the budding tears had slipped free of one eye, making its way down his cheek slowly as he locked eyes with his older brother.

Tears were building in Dean's eyes too by this point. "Keep fighting" he answered in a thick voice. "Take care of my wheels." He tried to smile. "Sam, remember what Dad taught you... okay? And remember what I taught you." Sam nodded, pressing his lips together. More tears cascaded down his cheeks as he and Dean continued to just look at each other. "I'm sorry, Dean" Ruby apologized sincerely as the grandfather clock struck midnight, ringing each toll loud and clear. "I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy." Sam could see the fear in his brother's eyes. He could see how badly he was struggling to stay calm on the outside. And it only made his heart hurt more.

As the fourth chime sounded, Dean's expression grew tight. He lifted a shaking finger and pointed. "Hellhound." Without another word, the three of them began sprinting in the opposite direction. Sam could hear the dog's gnashing teeth and its paws pounding the ground as it chased them. They managed to make it into the nearest room with a door, which they promptly slammed. "Here!" Sam, with his back against the door, tossed a pouch of salt to Dean who was kneeling. He quickly began spreading it out in front of the door to keep the snarling hellhound at bay, breathing heavily. The salt line did the trick. No more banging. Sam stepped away from the door cautiously, unsure of how long their protection would last but at least it gave them a few extra seconds to think. Ruby held out one hand. "Alright, give me the knife, maybe I can fight it off." Sam stared at her, a bit confused. "Come on" she urged. "That line won't last forever." She had a point. And she was a demon, so Sam was pretty sure she could see the hellhound, which would give her an advantage.

So he pulled the knife out of his belt, preparing to hand it over. "Wait" Dean called sharply from behind him. "Do you want to die" Ruby challenged, one hand still out. "Sam, that's not Ruby" Dean informed him in a rush. "It's not Ruby!" Without doubting Dean for a second, Sam hoisted the knife, but before he could stab anything with it, he was flung up against the nearest wall, pinned in place, the knife falling harmlessly to the floor. Dean took a step towards her next but was knocked off his feet, thrown easily onto the room's only table, unable to move. "How long you been in her" Dean grunted, struggling to lift his head so he could see Ruby...or rather, the demon that was now possessing Ruby's old meatsuit. And Sam had a horrible suspicion as to who it was. A horrible suspicion that was confirmed when the woman's eyes turned solid white momentarily. "Not long" Lilith replied in a childish voice, running her hands over the meatsuit cheerfully. "But I like it. It's all grown up and pretty." "And where's Ruby" Sam demanded, struggling against his invisible bindings. Lilith blinked, returning her eyes to normal. "She was a very bad girl, so I sent her far, far away." "You know, I should have seen it before" Dean commented, grimacing. "But you all look alike to me." Lilith watched him for a minute before snapping her focus to Sam, advancing slowly. "Hello, Sam. I've wanted to meet you for a very long time." Sam swallowed hard. "Right, so you have me now. Let my brother go."

Lilith clicked her tongue admonishingly. "Silly goose. You wanna bargain, you have to have something that I want. And you don't." "So, is this your big plan, huh" Dean called sarcastically from the table. "Drag me to hell. Kill Sam. And then what? Become queen bitch?" Lilith slowly returned her full attention to Dean, tilting her head to one side and smirking. "I don't have to answer to puppy chow" she countered, crossing the room in two strides and placing a hand on the doorknob. Sam felt his heart racing in fearful anticipation. Lilith twisted the knob and pulled. The bottom of the door scraped against the salt line, breaking it easily. "Sic 'em, boy." Sam and Dean looked at each other wildly and then the door. The sound of a snarling dog wasn't hard to miss. Nor was the sound of its heavy paws, tearing across the hardwood floor on a direct path to Dean.

Sam pulled with all his might against the magic that was binding him to the wall. But he was unable to do anything other than stare in helpless horror as his brother was dragged by the leg down off of the table, trying to escape and failing just as miserably as Sam failed at trying to break free from the wall. "Dean" he shouted in panicked alarm as the older Winchester's chest was punctured by a claw, blood spurting everywhere. "No! No, stop it" he begged Lilith desperately, struggling for all he was worth. Dean lay on the floor screaming in agony as the hellhound continued ripping into him like a christmas present. Lilith simply laughed. "STOP IT! DEAN! NO!!!" Oceans of tears flooded Sam's face. Dean's hoarse screams were fading fast, turning into little choking, gasping noises. "Yes" Lilith enthused, lifting one hand and directing her flat palm at Sam. A blast of white light filled the room. Sam threw up his arms for protection, not that he had much hopes of it working.

Wait a minute. He was able to throw up his arms. And he was no longer pinned to the wall but on the floor. The realization struck him as the white light began to fade from the room, leaving Lilith looking stunned and a little fearful. Whatever she'd done he'd been immune. Just like that weird demon virus from several months ago. Sam, with a deadly expression on his face, slowly rose to his feet, scooping up Ruby's fallen knife on his way up. Lilith waved a hand at him, trying to fling him backwards like she'd done earlier. "Back" she ordered in a scared, trembling voice. "Get back." Sam gripped Ruby's knife tighter as he advanced. "I don't think so." He lifted the knife high in one hand, but before he could bring it down, Lilith was bailing. Her meatsuit threw back its head, opened its mouth, and, with a scream, the mass of black smoke that was Lilith came pouring forth. For a second, it circled above the no-longer-possessed girl's body, which had collapsed, and then it vanished into the ceiling's ventilation grate, leaving Sam alone with two silent, still bodies at his feet.

He ignored the girl's, dropping Ruby's knife and going straight for his brother. "Dean." He knelt beside Dean's torn, bloody corpse, rocking him in his arms, fresh tears joining the dried ones already on his face. "Dean..." But there was no answer.

Dean was dead.

"Somebody help me!!!!"

Dean struggled for all he was worth against the long metal chains that held him in place. Each chain ended in a sharp hook that tore through the flesh of each shoulder and ankle. He was sweaty and blood-soaked, and his whole body was on fire. But what frightened him most was the uncertainty of what was going to happen next. Hell was not a fun place. He wanted out.
