ooc; SEASON THREE. EPISODE ONE.

Dean was enjoying his last year of life immensely. It had only been about a week but still...he'd yet to see a downside in knowing when his time was going to expire. Well other than the fact that he was going to die. But that was a minor technicality. He drank more, ate bacon cheeseburgers for almost every meal, and at that very moment was about to go all the way with an incredibly hot, extremely chesty girl he'd picked up at a bar an hour ago. He glanced through the window and gave a thumbs up at Sam who was waiting in the Impala.

Then he closed the curtains.

We hunt monsters....you know who does that? Crazy people!

Sam sat in the Impala with a heavy book open on his lap, shining a flashlight over its pages. For the last week he'd been searching every lore book he could get his hands on, looking for something...anything...that would free Dean of his crossroads deal. And so far he was coming up dry. Glancing up briefly, he saw Dean giving him a thumbs up through the window and nodded with a slightly amused smile. When the curtains closed and the silhouettes of Dean and the girl could be seen undressing each other, Sam returned his focus to the book at hand.

A few seconds later, his cell phone rang, distracting him once again. Using his flashlight free hand, he pulled the phone from his pocket, pressed 'talk', and held it up to his ear. Bobby's voice floated over the extension. "Hey Sam." "Hey Bobby." Sam tucked the phone between his ear and shoulder, flipping a page in the book. Bobby must have heard the turning pages through the phone because the next thing out of his mouth was, "are you buried in that book again Sam?" Sam said nothing. Bobby sighed. "Sam, you want to break Dean free of that demon deal, you ain't gonna find the answer in no book." "Then where Bobby" Sam asked wearily. Bobby's answer was just as weary. "Kid, I wish I knew." Another pause and then, "well you boys better pack it up because I think I finally found something." He explained what he'd found and then hung up. Sam pocketed his phone, closed the book, and made his way towards the house.

He knocked a few times on the front door, calling out, "Dean? Dean are you conscious?" He pushed open the unlocked door and stuck his head inside. "Bobby called and he thinks we should"- His eyes widened in horror. Dean and his latest conquest were lying on the floor, stark naked. "Oh god." He backed out quickly.

Ten minutes later as they cruised off in the Impala, Sam was still trying to eradicate the vision from his mind. He addressed Dean. "Let me see your knife." Dean raised a curious eyebrow. "What for?" "So I can gouge my eyes out" was Sam's very honest answer, his expression pained. Dean chuckled. "It's a very beautiful and natural act Sam." Sam made a face. "It's a part of you I never wanted to see Dean." Still chuckling, Dean slapped Sam on the thigh with one hand. "Well anyway, I appreciate you giving me some time with the doublemint twins back there." "Yeah, no problem." Sam looked off to one side, speaking quietly. Dean looked surprised. "Really? Well, I got to say, I was expecting a weary sigh, an eye roll, or something..." Sam tried to smile. "No, you deserve to have a little fun." Dean nodded enthusiastically. "Well I am in violent agreement with you there." He bobbed his head up and down a few times to the radio music that had been playing faintly in the background. "What's Bobby got" he wanted to know after another couple of minutes in which Sam was working very hard to keep a smile on his face for Dean's benefit.

"Not much" Sam admitted. "A crop failure and a cicada swarm outside of Lincoln, Nebraska. Could be demonic omens..." "Or it could just be a bad crop and a bug problem" Dean pointed out reasonably. Sam shrugged. "Well it's our only lead." Dean had no objection on that point. "Any freaky deaths in the area?" "Nothing Bobby could find – not yet, anyway." Dean shook his head, puzzled. "It's weird, man. I mean, the night the devil's gate opened, all these weirdo storm clouds were sighted over how many cities?" "Seventeen" Sam supplied. "Seventeen" Dean repeated. "You'd think it would be "Apocalypse Now," but it's been five days and bubkis." His grip on the steering wheel tightened. "What are the demons waiting for?" Sam shrugged in bafflement. He'd been wondering the same thing. "Beats me." Dean gave a grouchy sigh. "It's driving me crazy. I tell you, if it's gonna be war, I wish it would just start already." "I don't know man." Sam frowned doubtfully.

"Be careful what you wish for."

The boys holed up at a motel in Lincoln and then met Bobby the next morning at a house on the outskirts of town. As they exited the car, the sound of swarming bugs wasn't hard to miss. Sam closed the passenger-side door. "Hear those cicadas?" Dean closed his own door sharply with one hand, holding onto his breakfast burger in the other. "That can't be a good sign." "No. No, it can't" Sam agreed grimly. Bobby was leaning up against the hood of his car but shoved off of it as the boys approached. He eyed the burger in Dean's hands. "So we're eating bacon cheeseburgers for breakfast now?" Dean shrugged indifferently. "Hey, I sold my soul. Got a year to live. No reason to sweat cholesterol anymore" he pointed out. "So, Bobby, what do you think" Sam asked quickly. Dean couldn't help but notice the speed of the subject change or the catch in his younger brother's voice. "We got a biblical plague here or what?" Bobby shrugged. "Well, let's find out. This house looks like the swarm's ground zero." The three of them climbed the front steps and Dean knocked a few times on the door. No answer.

Dean glanced over one shoulder at Bobby and Sam and then pulled his lock-picking tools from one pocket and knelt in front of the door, jimmying open the lock. Shouldering open the door, he was hit by a horrible stench that immediately made him cover his nose and mouth with the inside of his elbow, gagging. From behind him Sam was doing the same thing. "That's awful." Dean lowered his arm, pulling his gun free from the back of his pants where it was stashed, and cocking it. "That so can't be a good sign" he muttered, entering the house with the other two close behind him. They split up, Bobby going one way and the boys going the other, scouring the house for anything out of the ordinary.

After a few silent minutes of prowling, Sam nudged Dean in the side. "Hey. You hear that?" There was the sound of distant shouting coming from the back room of the house. Dean nodded. They kicked down the door together, their drawn guns raised, and recoiled at once. The smell in this back room was far worse than the rest of the house. "Oh god" Dean gagged, taking one hand off of his gun to place it both over his nose and mouth. The smell's source was coming from the three corpses sitting in a row on a sofa in the center of the room, facing the television which was still playing, hence the shouting they'd heard. Bobby entered the room from the other side and his reaction was the same as the boys'. "Bobby what the hell happened here" Sam finally managed to ask. Bobby frowned. "I don't know." Dean un-cocked and lowered his pistol but didn't put it away just yet. "Look for sulfur."

The three of them began searching the room thoroughly. A sudden creaking from outside caught Dean's attention as he ran two fingers over the windowsill in his search for sulfur. He whistled sharply to gain the others' attention and then gestured swiftly without saying a word, implying they should take one way and he'd take the other, meeting up in the middle. Moving stealthily, he opened the door and stepped outside. No sooner had he done so than the butt of a rifle was being slammed into his face, knocking him to the ground. The man holding said rifle cocked it and pointed it at Dean, who lay on the ground groaning. A woman stood behind him. Suddenly, Bobby's voice rang out in surprise as he and Sam came jogging up from the opposite direction. "Isaac? Tamara??" "Bobby" the woman, presumably Tamara, exclaimed in equal surprise. "What the hell are you doing here?" "I could ask the same" Bobby pointed out. Isaac lowered his weapon, grinning. "Hiya Bobby." "Hello." Dean lifted his arm in the air from the ground, waving it around piteously for attention.

"Bleeding here."

Sam stuffed his gun out of sight in the back of his pants, covering it with his jacket, and then stepped forward to lend Dean a hand in getting back to his feet. Their little posse moved inside the house where Dean grabbed a rag to dot away the blood from his nose before taking out his phone and disappearing into the next room over. Sam, Bobby, Isaac and Tamara started gathering demon-fighting supplies. They hadn't 100% confirmed demons were involved in anything going on yet, but it never hurt to be prepared. Sam worked on filling up a sixth flask of holy water as he addressed Isaac and Tamara conversationally just to fill the silence. "So how long have you two been married?" "Eight years this past June" Tamara answered before leaning over to kiss Isaac. Isaac smiled fondly. "The family that slays together" he began, obviously going for the slogan "the family that slays together stays together", and Sam nodded understandingly with a small laugh. "Right. I'm with you on that one."

"Well Jenny" Dean was saying as he rejoined their little group, his phone pressed to one ear lightly. "If you look as pretty as you sound, I'd love to have an...appletini..." He made a face, clearly having no clue what he'd just agreed to before saying goodbye and hanging up. "That was the coroner's assistant" he explained, pocketing his phone. Sam nodded expectantly. "And?" Dean leaned up against the nearest wall, crossing his arms. "Get this – that whole family, cause of death? Dehydration and starvation. There's no signs of restraint, no violence, no struggle. They just sat down and never got up again." Bobby and Sam swapped a confused look. Bobby raised a skeptical eyebrow. "But there was a fully stocked kitchen just ten yards away" he pointed out. "Right" Sam agreed, asking his next question to the room at large. "So what is this? Is it a demon attack?" "If it is, it's not like anything I ever saw, and I've seen plenty" Bobby remarked. Now it was Sam and Dean who swapped the look. Dean voiced what they were both thinking. "Well then what do we do now?" Neither Bobby nor Sam had an answer. Instead it was Isaac who spoke next. "Uh, "we're" not gonna do anything." Sam frowned. "What do you mean?" Isaac sighed. "You guys seem nice enough, but, this ain't "Scooby-Doo," and we don't play well with others." Sam glanced over one shoulder at Dean, who shrugged, and then returned his focus to Isaac. "Well, I just thought we'd cover a lot more ground if we all worked together." Isaac's next sigh was heavier and more resentful. "No offense, but we're not teaming with the damn fools who let the Devil's Gate get opened in the first place." "....no offense" Dean echoed in disbelief, pushing off of the wall and advancing. "Isaac" Tamara admonished. "Like you've never made a mistake." Isaac nodded sarcastically. "Oh yeah, yeah. Locked my keys in the car, turned my laundry pink. Never brought on the end of the world, though." Dean chuckled darkly, clearly not amused, and crossed his arms again. "All right. That's enough." "Guys this isn't helping" Sam protested quietly, putting out a hand to stop Dean from moving any further in Isaac's direction. "Dean..."

"Look, there are couple hundred more demons out there now" Isaac pointed out gruffly. "We don't know where they are, when they'll strike. There ain't enough hunters in the world to handle something like this." He pointed at Dean and then Sam before finishing with, "you brought war down on us – on all of us." There was a long, heavily awkward pause, before Tamara took Isaac by the hand and practically dragged him from the room after saying hastily, "Okay. that's quite enough testosterone for now." Left alone, Sam, Dean and Bobby simply looked at each other without anything to say. What exactly did you say after a verbal attack like that??

The next day Isaac's words were the last thing on any of their minds. A young woman had been murdered outside of a local shoe store because the victim had not given her a pair of shoes. Sam and Dean arrived on the scene to check it out and then went their separate ways. Dean headed straight inside while Sam hung around outside, keeping an eye on the forensic team that was trying to clean up the crime scene while simultaneously keeping the curious onlookers back. Then he entered the store and tracked down Dean who was talking to a pretty blond girl. "What happened outside makes you realize how fragile life really is. You got to make every second count." Sam cleared his throat loudly. The girl winked at Dean and sauntered off. Sam stared at his brother. "Dean, what are you doing?" "Comforting the bereaved" Dean replied seriously though his eyes were laughing. "What are you doing?" Sam crossed his arms pointedly. "Workin'. Dead body, possible demon attack – that kind of stuff." Dean gave a theatrically feeble cough. "Sam, I'm sorry. It's just, I don't have much time left, and, uh...got to make every second count.." Sam felt a squeeze in his heart like he always did whenever Dean mentioned his impending trip downstairs. "Sorry" he muttered, chastised. Dean's coughing ceased immediately with a wide grin. "Apology accepted." Sam opened his mouth, trying to work up the courage to confront Dean about his cordial attitude towards the crossroads deal but before he could get there, Bobby approached in a crisp suit, his hair slicked back. The boys swapped an impressed look. Dean whistled. "Whoa. Looking spiffy, Bobby. What were you, a G-man?" "Attorney for the DA's office" Bobby corrected. "I just spoke to the suspect." Sam had finally uncrossed his arms. "Yeah? So, what do you think? Is she possessed or what?" Bobby made a doubtful face. "Don't think so. There's none of the usual signs – no blackouts, no loss of control. Totally lucid. Just, she REALLY wanted those shoes." He shrugged. "Spilled a glass of holy water on her just to be sure; nothing." Dean glanced in the direction Bobby had just come from, considering. "Maybe she's just some random whack job?" Bobby tilted his head to one side. "If it had been an isolated incident, maybe, but first the family, now this? I believe in a lot of things. Coincidence ain't one of them. Did you boys find anything around here?" Sam shook his head in defeat.

"Nothing."

"Well...maybe something" Dean amended, swiveling his gaze around to land on the security camera overtop of the entrance door. "See" he added, grinning at Sam. "I'm working."

"Anything interesting" Dean asked over Sam's shoulder half an hour later as Sam scrolled through the video footage in the security office. "I don't know yet" Sam admitted as the three of them watched a redheaded man enter the store. "Could just be a guy..." He rubbed his eyes wearily. The man approached the blond woman who'd murdered the victim and placed a hand on her shoulder. Dean and Bobby peered closer. Sam straightened up. "Or it could be our guy."

The three of them each took a printout of the mysterious redheaded man's face and split up to cover more of the town, asking questions. Dean received word that their suspect was a regular at a local bar. So Dean texted both Bobby and Sam the address before heading that way himself. He'd only been parked in front of the bar for about ten minutes when Bobby pulled up in his junker. Dean exited the Impala and joined him. Bobby squinted through the windshield. "You sure this is the right place?" "No" Dean admitted. "But I spent all day canvassing this stupid town with this guy's stupid mug, and, supposedly, he drinks at this ... stupid bar." Bobby seemed on the verge of commenting on how many 'stupids' were in that sentence when a sudden loud banging made Dean jump a foot in the air. Sam was hitting the window with one fist, grinning broadly. "Not funny" Dean snapped, his heart beat slowing to normal again as Sam hopped into the backseat, still grinning. "Yeah, sure. Uh, all right, so – so, John Doe's name is Walter Rosen. He's from Oak Park, just west of Chicago. Went missing about a week ago." "The night the devil's gate opened" Dean concluded. "Yeah." Dean glanced through the windshield to make sure they hadn't missed his arrival yet. "So what...you think he's possessed?" Sam nodded a few times. "Well, it's a good bet. So, what, he just walks up to someone, touches them, and they go stark raving psycho?" Dean tilted his head to one side, considering this, while Bobby pointed out, "Those demons that got out at the gate – they're gonna do all kinds of things we haven't seen." "You mean the demons we LET out" Sam corrected quietly. Apparently Isaac's words were still weighing heavily on him. Bobby opened his mouth, probably to tell him off for that kind of mentality, but Dean had spotted something. "Guys." He pointed. The redheaded man was getting out of a little black sports car, meandering his way towards the bar's front entrance. "Alright." Dean reached for the door handle in determination.

"Show time."

Bobby spoke up quickly. "Wait a minute." Dean paused, his hand still on the door. "What?" "What'd I just say" Bobby asked in exasperation. "We don't know what to expect out of this guy. We should tail him till we know for sure." Sam glanced out of his window while Dean and Bobby continued arguing in the background. "Oh, so he kills someone and we just sit here with our junk in our hands" Dean scoffed to which Bobby came back tightly with, "we're no good dead! And we're not going to make a move until we know what the score is" he finished just as Sam noticed another car pulling into the lot. He squinted into the growing darkness as two figures got out and started for the building. "Uh, Bobby, I don't think that's an option anymore" he pointed out reasonably. Bobby twisted in his seat to see Sam better. "Why's that?" Sam nodded his head towards Isaac and Tamara who were just pulling open the bar's front door, preparing to enter. Bobby straightened in his seat, slapping the steering wheel. "Dammit!"

The three of them were out of the car in a jiffy, sprinting up the steps. Sam turned the handle and jiggled it, trying to open the door but it wouldn't budge. "Dammit" Bobby repeated as the three of them began slamming their shoulders into the door. It shook and rattled but still would not break down. After a few more attempts and gaining nothing but sore shoulders, they retreated to Bobby's car, which Bobby then proceeded to drive straight through that blasted door. Sam jumped out of the back seat, armed with a large flask of holy water, which he began flinging the contents of onto the demons that attacked. Bobby and Dean were doing the same on either side of him. The demons began backing up, howling and smoking. Sam grabbed Tamara around the waist, trying to pull her towards the waiting car as she screamed for Isaac who was lying in a bloody heap on the ground. Sam didn't have to know what happened to know he was not getting up again. "Come on, we've got to go" he shouted, shoving Tamara towards the open back seat of Bobby's car. Tamara tried to wriggle free of Sam's grip in an attempt to get back to where they'd left Isaac. Sam tightened his hold on her. "He's dead! Get in the car!" Sam slid into the back seat after Tamara. Bobby was already back in the driver's seat. Dean however was still emptying his flask of holy water on the demons. "Dean, get in the car!!!" When Dean continued battling, Sam elevated his voice. "DEAN!!! Get in the car!!!" He slammed the car door closed with finality.

The older Winchester sent a solid right hook into the jaw of the redheaded man, overpowering him and stuffing him into Bobby's trunk which had a devil's trap craftily painted on the interior of the lid, much like the Impala. Slamming the trunk lid closed, trapping the demon inside, Dean flung himself into the passenger side seat, slamming the door while shouting, "go, go, go!" Bobby revved the engine and peeled out of there like a house on fire, leaving the other, soaking wet, burning, pissed off demons in their dust.

Once securing the demon in a chair beneath yet another devil's trap on the ceiling of the abandoned house's back room, Bobby, Sam, Dean, and Tamara spread out around the kitchen, trying to plan their next move. "I say we're going back right now!" Tamara started for the door. Sam got in her path. "Just hold on a second!" "I left my husband bloody on the floor" she shouted in pain. Sam held up his hands, palms out, speaking as calmly as he could. "Okay, I understand that, but we can't go back." Tamara straightened up to her full height, seemingly unbothered by the fact that it still left her several feet below Sam's towering frame. "Fine. Then you stay. But I'm heading back to that bar." She brushed past him, heading once again for the door. "I'll go with her" Dean volunteered, moving in that direction as well. "That's suicide Dean" Sam shouted in outrage at Dean's retreating back. "So what, I'm dead already" was his callous retort over one shoulder. Sam's spine bristled. With two long strides, he reached the door first and blocked their path, narrowing his eyes at Dean. "How are you going to kill them" he wanted to know impatiently, his voice rising with each new comment, until he was practically shouting. "Can't shoot 'em. You can't stab 'em. They're not just gonna wait in line to get exorcised!!" "I don't care" Tamara shrieked, trying to get past him but Sam held his ground, addressing both of them but keeping his eyes on Dean. "We don't even know how many of them are out there!"

"Yes we do" Bobby countered, interrupting the little spat finally as he entered from another room, carrying a heavy book. "There's seven." He took a deep breath. "Do you have any idea who we're up against here??" The boys swapped a look, the fight draining from both of them. "No, who" Dean wanted to know. Bobby handed him the book. "The seven deadly sins...live and in person!" As Dean began flipping through the book, Bobby continued explaining. ""Binsfeld's Classification of Demons." In 1589, Binsfeld ID'd the seven sins – not just as human vices but as actual devils." Sam started to put it together. "The family...they were touched by sloth. And the shopper..." "That was envy's doing" Bobby filled in with a nod. "The customer we've got in the other room." He took the book back from Dean and dropped it onto a nearby counter. "I couldn't suss it out at first, until Isaac. He was touched with an awful Gluttony." "I don't give a rat's ass if they're the Three Stooges or the Four Tops!" Tamara's voice was shaking with anger. "I'm gonna slaughter every last one of them!" Bobby got right in her face. "We already did it your way. You burst in there half-cocked and look what happened! These demons haven't been topside in half a millennium! We're talking medieval, Dark Ages! We've never faced anything close to this! So we are gonna take a breath..." He did so, and then finished with a shout, "...and FIGURE OUT WHAT OUR NEXT MOVE IS!!!" Tamara flinched. Sam and Dean swapped another look. Bobby's expression softened, as did his tone. "I am sorry for your loss." He placed a hand on Tamara's shoulder briefly and then removed it and headed for the back room. Sam and Dean followed. And after a minute, so did Tamara.

"So you know who I am, huh?" Envy chuckled. "We do." Bobby nodded blandly. "We're not impressed." Sam crossed his arms. "Why are you here? What are you after?" Envy said nothing. Dean twisted off the cap of the flask he was holding casually. "He asked you a question." Flinging a good portion of the flask's contents onto Envy's face, Dean repeated the question on the table. "What do you want??" Envy threw his head back with a gasp of pain as his skin burned and smoked from the holy water. Lowering his head, he panted, "we already have what we want" causing the room's other occupants to all look at each other curiously. Still panting, Envy went on. "We're out. We're free. Thanks to you, my kind are everywhere. So me, I'm just celebrating. Having a little fun." "Fun" Sam echoed. "Fun" Envy repeated in confirmation. "You see...some people paint. Others golf. Me...I like to see people's insides...on their outsides..." He gave a nasty smile. "I'm gonna put you down like a dog" Tamara snapped. Envy laughed. "Please. You really think you're better than me??" His eyes narrowed. "Which one of you can cast the first stone, huh? What about you, Dean? You're practically a, a walking billboard of gluttony and lust." Dean gave an acknowledging nod, unfazed by this assessment of his personality. Envy went on. "And Tamara. All that wrath." He clicked his tongue admonishingly. "It's the reason you and Isaac became hunters in the first place, isn't it? It's so much easier to ... drink in the rage than to face what really happened all those years ago..." Her face twisted in fury, Tamara launched at Envy, getting two good hits in before Sam was able to grab her arms, and pull her back.

Envy went right on laughing. "My point exactly. And you call us sins?? We're not sins, man. We are natural human instinct. And you can repress and deny us all you want, but the truth is, you are just animals. Horny... greedy... hungry... violent animals. And you know what? You'll be slaughtered like animals, too." He leaned forward in his chair. "The others...they're coming for me." Sam kept his grip on Tamara. Bobby picked up a leather-bound book. And Dean placed both palms on the arms of Envy's chair, leaning down to get in his face. "Maybe" he allowed with a dark smirk. "But they're not going to find you. Because you'll be back in hell." Envy's smile froze. Dean straightened up. "Someone send this clown packing." Tamara took the book from Bobby with a cold smile as Sam released her. "My pleasure." As she began reading in latin, the other three made their way back into the next room. "I don't think we're gonna have to worry about hunting them" Bobby remarked grimly. Sam lifted an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "You heard him." Bobby gestured towards the direction they'd just come from. "They're on their way. They're hunting US." Sam frowned in concentration, trying to come up with a game plan. Then Dean spoke up with one of his own. "You guys, why don't you take Tamara and head for the hills? I'll stay back, slow them down, buy you a little time." Sam shook his head incredulously. "You're insane, Dean. Just forget about it, okay?" "Sam's right" Bobby added immediately. Dean held his ground. "There's SIX of them, guys. We're outmanned, we're outgunned. We'll be dead by dawn." Sam was getting really tired of Dean's attitude lately. It was fraying what was left of his thin patience but now was not really the time to bring this up. So instead all he said aloud was, "Look, if we're going down, we're going down together, all right??" He locked eyes with Dean, his posture stiff as a wooden board.

At long last, Dean inclined his head in a brief nod of acceptance. "Well let's not make it easy for them." Sam gave a nod of relief, sinking down onto the nearest stool. From the next room over they could hear Envy scream. A few seconds later, Tamara joined them. "Demon's out of the guy" she announced. Sam raised an eyebrow. "And the guy?" Tamara kept walking. "He didn't make it."

It took them the better part of forty-five minutes to demon-proof the house. Sam sat on a bench, filling flasks with more holy water from a plastic gallon jug while Dean sat on the floor opposite him, his back up against the wall, loading rocksalt bullets into a shotgun. Sam kept looking Dean's way every few seconds, trying to figure out the best possible way to approach him about the things he'd been doing and saying lately. But he couldn't do it. Even just the thought of striking up that conversation made his throat tighten and his eyes get heavy with the threat of impending tears. He kept trying to remind himself that Dean was just being Dean. That he probably didn't know how much it hurt Sam every time he made a joke about his deal or suggested a reckless action. But Sam wasn't sure if that made him feel better.

Or worse.

Dean glanced up from the gun after loading a final bullet and caught Sam staring at him with an expression that was difficult to read, but if Dean had to take a best guess, he'd say it was pained. Something was bothering him. However, before he could ask what was going on, the room's lights began to flicker. And the radio switched on without anyone touching it. Dean cocked the gun and got to his feet. "Here we go." The boys joined Bobby and Tamara by the front window, peering outside as the lights continued to go haywire.

And then suddenly there was a familiar voice shouting loudly, "Tamara!!! Tamara, help me!!" Dean's grip on the shotgun tightened as he peered through the grimy window. Isaac was stumbling up the front path, covered in blood. Next to Dean, Tamara was silently crying, tears pouring down her face as she took in the same sight. "Tamara" Isaac went on desperately. "I got away, but I'm hurt bad! I need help!" "It's not him. One of those demons is possessing his corpse" Bobby said aloud, unnecessarily. Not a single one of them thought it was actually him. Not even Tamara. Though her resolve seemed to be weakening as Isaac's voice rang out again, coupled with loud banging of one fist on the door. "Baby! Why won't you let me in? You left me behind back there. How could you do that? We swore ... At that lake in Michigan. Remember? We swore we would never leave each other!" Tamara let out an audible sob, the tears falling faster. "How did he know that??" Sam and Dean traded looks while Bobby tried to calm her down. "Steady, Tamara. Steady..." The banging got louder. "You just gonna leave me out here? You just gonna let me die?!" His voice darkened. "I guess that's what you do, dear! Like that night those things came to our house... came ... for our daughter! You just let her die, too." Dean knew it was coming before it happened. He tried to make a grab for her but he was too late. Tamara had flung open the door with a livid scream of "you son of a bitch", breaking the salt line, and tackling Isaac's body. "You're not Isaac" she went on shrilly, punching him in the face repeatedly. However, while she was doing that, the remaining five demons now had easy access to the house, all rushing to dart through the open front door.

Dean, Sam, and Bobby all split up instantly, each heading for a different room. Dean had reached the second floor before encountering one of the demons. She advanced on him, backing him into a wall, with a sultry look, making it pretty easy to guess who she was. "I suppose you're lust" Dean guessed rhetorically. She reached out one hand to stroke his cheek. "Baby, I'm whatever you want me to be" she purred. "Yeah, all right, just stay back" Dean warned, unable to retreat any further. "Or what" she challenged. Dean didn't really have a good answer for that. "Good point." Running her hand down from his cheek to his shoulder, she winked. "I'm not gonna hurt you – not yet anyway. Not unless you want me to." Dean glanced subtly over that shoulder, gauging how far it was to the bathroom from where they were. Then he grabbed her by the neck, pulling her closer and pressing their lips together passionately. They moved together down the hall, continuing to make out.

Once in the bathroom, Dean, in one fluent motion, broke free of the kiss, pulled aside the shower curtain, and plunged Lust face first into the bathtub full of holy water. He kept the pressure on her neck with one hand as she screamed and flailed about wildly. While doing this he rattled off the most common exorcism, the easiest to remember, and the black smoke burst from her mouth in one fell swoop. Dean lay the unconscious, no longer possessed, girl on the ground and hurried from the room.

He had to find Sam.

Sam meanwhile had secured himself in another room on the second floor, a devil's trap painted on its ceiling for protection. He waited with anticipation until, sure enough, the door burst open to reveal three of the remaining five demons, all smirking at him. After a dramatic pause, they began advancing. Sam held his breath. The demon in front, a young business-suit wearing man, was about two steps from the trap when he stopped, holding up a hand, and the two behind him halted as well. His eyes moved upwards, taking in the devil's trap with an unimpressed look. "Come on, did you really think something like that would fool me" he asked, snapping. A large crack ripped through the ceiling, splitting the trap in half. "I mean, seriously? ME???" Sam rolled his eyes. "Let me guess. You're pride."

Pride nodded with a flourish. "The root of all sin. And you ... are Sam Winchester. That's right, I've heard of you. We've all heard of you. The prodigy. The boy king. Looking at you now, I got to tell you – don't believe the hype." He took a step closer and Sam retreated a step in return. Pride glanced him up and down with a sneer. "You think I'm gonna bow to a cut-rate, piss-poor human like you? I have my pride, after all. And now with your yellow-eyed friend dead, I guess I don't really have to do a damn thing, now do I?" He raised an eyebrow ominously. Sam retreated another step nervously, feeling his back come into contact with the wall. Pride cackled. "You're fair game now, boy, and it's open season." He rushed Sam, knocking him to the ground with a strong blow to the jaw, then reached down and pulled him up by the front of his jacket before wrapping an arm around his neck and beginning to squeeze tightly. Sam gasped for air.

Through his slowly depleting supply of oxygen, Sam could hear footsteps approaching rapidly. Dean. He tried to call out and warn him, but he was having trouble breathing, let along speaking. And then there was a burst of yellowish light and a thud as Gluttony fell to the ground dead. Pride threw Sam to the floor and joined Greed who was battling with the room's newest occupant. Who was not Dean, Sam could see now, but a girl about his age, swinging around a knife. She plunged it deep into Greed's chest, killing her, but Pride tackled the girl, rearing back to hit her. Sam grabbed his arm, pulling him off of the girl and punching him hard in the face. This action spun him around, placing him right in the path of the mysterious girl and her knife which embedded itself in Pride's throat, killing him instantly with the same sort of yellowy glowing light.

Panting, Sam turned to the girl. "Who the hell are you??" She slid the knife into a holster on her upper thigh and wiped a trail of blood from her lip with the back of one hand. "I'm the girl who just saved your ass" she pointed out truthfully. "Well I saved yours too" Sam countered causing her to chuckle. "See ya around Sam." She saluted him and exited the room. Sam blinked. "Wait!!" He charged after her into the hallway.

But she was gone.

The next morning the boys were laying Greed, Pride, Gluttony, and Envy's corpses in a large hole in the ground they'd dug. Several yards away Tamara was standing in front of a tower of logs, on top of which rested Isaac's wrapped, salted, and burning body. A hunter's funeral. "You think she'll be ok" Sam wanted to know, dusting off his hands. "No" Dean answered honestly. "Definitely not." Bobby came trotting down the house's front steps, looking exhausted. Sam wrinkled his brow in concern. "Any survivors Bobby?" Bobby glanced over his shoulder at the house and then back to the boys. "Well the fat one and the pretty girl will be ok eventually. A life time of therapy but still..." "Better than these poor bastards" Dean pointed out, picking up a shovel and beginning to cover them. Sam stared for a few extra seconds before grabbing a second shovel. "Bobby, that knife..." He'd filled them in pretty quickly after his little encounter with the strange girl. "What kind of blade can kill a demon?" Bobby frowned. "Yesterday, I would have said there was no such thing." Dean tossed another few shovelfuls of dirt into the slowly filling hole. "I'm just gonna ask it again – who was that masked chick??" He paused and then asked the other question on his mind teasingly. "Actually, the more troubling question would be, how come a girl can fight better than you?"

Sam narrowed his eyes, though he was chuckling. "THREE demons Dean. At once." Dean tossed down his shovel and brushed off his hands before clapping Sam on the shoulder lightly. "Hey, whatever it takes to get you through the night, pal." Sam rolled his eyes good-naturedly. The hole now completely full, the boys and Bobby moved over to the waiting Impala. Dean leaned against it. Sam's cheery expression had dimmed slightly as he rested up against the car next to Dean. "If you want a troubling question, I've got one for you." Dean twisted his head sideways so he could see Sam better. "What's that?" Sam frowned in troubled curiosity. "If we let out the seven deadly sins, what else did we let out?" Dean frowned as well. "You're right, that is troubling."

"Keep your eyes peeled for omens. I'll do the same" Bobby announced shortly thereafter as they prepared to leave. Dean gave Bobby a half-salute. "You got it." As Bobby turned to get into his own car, Sam piped up worriedly with, "Wait. Bobby...we can win this war, right?" There was an uncomfortable silence. Finally, instead of answering, Bobby simply said, "Catch you on the next one" and ducked into his car. The boys exchanged a long look before Dean pushed off of the car and headed around it for the driver's side. "So where to now?" "Uh, I don't know" Sam hedged, also pushing off of the car, turning around to face Dean, and tracing a finger along the roof of the car. "I was thinking Louisiana maybe." Dean wrinkled his brow, opening the car door with one hand. "Little early for Mardi Gras, isn't it?" Sam nodded energetically. "Yeah. But listen, I was talking to Tamara, and she mentioned this hoodoo priestess outside of Shreveport that might be able to help us out. You know, with your – with your demon deal." With effort, Dean kept his expression neutral. He should have known Sam could not just leave this alone. "Nah." Sam's eyes widened. ""Nah"? What does that mean, "nah"?" Still fighting to keep his composure, Dean locked eyes with his brother over the top of the Impala. "Sam, no hoodoo spell's gonna break this deal, all right? It's a goose chase." "But we don't know that Dean until"- "Yes, we do" Dean interrupted shortly. "Forget it. She can't help." Sam tried again. "Look, it's worth"- Dean slammed the car door closed and advanced on Sam. "We're not going, and that's that." There was a tense pause and then he tried to change the subject. "What about Reno, huh?" He gave Sam's shoulder a light pat and turned to walk in the opposite direction, but Sam grabbed his sleeve and spun him back around. His expression was agitated. "You know what? I've had it. I've been bending over backwards trying to be nice to you, and..." He shrugged. "I don't care anymore." Dean's lips twitched. "Well that didn't last long."

Sam shook his head, clearly pissed off. "Yeah, well, you know what? I've been busting my ass trying to keep you alive, Dean, and you act like you couldn't care less. What, you got some kind of death wish or something?" Dean tried to keep smiling. "No, it's not like that." "Then what's it like Dean?" Sam stared hard at him. Dean's smile was strained. "Sam..." "Please tell me" Sam begged. Dean sighed and lifted his eyes to meet Sam's, no trace of the smile, strained or otherwise, on his face anymore. "We trap the crossroads demon, trick it, try to welch our way out of the deal in any way, and you die. Okay? You die Sam. Those are the terms. There's no way out of it." Dean narrowed his eyes deliberately. "And if you try to find a way, so help me god, I'm gonna stop you." Sam looked stunned. After a minute, he exhaled sadly. "How could you make that deal Dean?" Dean gave a saddened smile. "'Cause I couldn't live with you dead. Couldn't do it." Sam shook his head, his stunned expression melting into a pained one instead. "So, what, now I live and you die?" Dean nodded curtly. "That's the general idea, yeah." He turned to walk away again. Sam grabbed his shoulder, pulled him back a step, and then moved in front of him, blocking his path. "Yeah, well, you're a hypocrite, Dean. How did you feel when Dad sold his soul for you? 'Cause I was there. I remember. You were twisted, and broken. And now you go and do the same thing. To me." He exhaled sharply. "What you did was selfish." Dean considered this momentarily and then shrugged and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you're right. It was selfish. But I'm okay with that." Sam's shoulders stiffened. "I'm not." "Tough" Dean fired back flatly. "After everything I've done for this family, I think I'm entitled." He let out a deep breath slowly, most of the fight draining from his stiff posture. "Truth is, I'm tired, Sam. I don't know, it's like there's a, a light at the end of the tunnel finally." "That's hellfire Dean" Sam rebutted tightly. Dean couldn't help smiling at that. "Whatever. You're alive. I feel good – for the first time in a long time." He locked eyes with Sam, his tone upbeat. "I've got a year to live, Sam. I'd like to make the most of it. So what do you say we kill some evil sons of bitches and we raise a little hell, huh?" He nodded with finality, brushed past Sam and headed for the car. Sam stared after him in frustration. "You're unbelievable." Dean opened the driver's side car door with a wide smile directed at his brother.
