ooc; SEASON TWO. EPISODE ONE.

Dean sat up slowly in his hospital bed, letting his eyes roam over the laminated emergency room bracelet on his wrist and putting one hand up to feel the stitches in his forehead. It was slowly coming back to him that he, Sam, and their Dad had been in a serious car crash. Needing to see if they were ok, Dean slowly pushed himself out of bed and padded barefoot down two flights of stairs through an eerily empty hospital until he reached the front desk. "Um, excuse me...I think I was in a car accident...my dad and brother...I just need to see them" he informed the attractive blond woman working there while trying to remember what the names were on their latest health insurance scam. Surely she would ask for this information so she could search for them in the system. But she never asked. Because she never acknowledged his presence. Dean thought this was a little rude, until he snapped seven times in quick succession in front of her face and she didn't so much as flinch.

His irritableness morphed quickly into concern as he practically ran back through the hospital and skid to a halt outside of his room. His concern fled, replaced by flat out panic as he looked down at...

Himself.

We hunt monsters....you know who does that? Crazy people!

Sam stood in the doorway of Dean's room with a twisted expression, his insides completely numb and his vision fogging from the building tears. His brother was surviving off of machines at this point and seeing him with a plastic tube down his throat was making it hard for Sam to breathe normally. "Dean" he whispered morosely. "I am so sorry..." He knew he had nothing to apologize for. That what had happened was in no way his fault, but it was the only thing he could think of to say. Not that Dean could hear him anyway.

"Your father's awake." Sam jumped at the sound of a doctor's voice from behind him. Relief flooded him but it was short lived. "Doc...what about my brother?" He gestured at Dean's comatose frame on the bed, doing his absolute best to a) not break down, and b) ignore the strange little voice inside his head that sounded remarkably like Dean's. "He sustained several serious injuries to the liver and kidneys...massive blood loss...but what worries us more than that is the head injury. We'll know more when...if...he wakes up." "If" Sam repeated bleakly, hearing the voice in his head protesting. "We are going to do everything we can but it's important you have realistic expectations" the doctor clarified somberly. Sam nodded once, his head heavy, took one last fleeting look at his brother, and then moved down the hallway to where John was staying. He was pretty banged up too, with one arm in a cast and sling and several cuts to the face, but he was sitting up in bed, breathing on his own, and most importantly...he was conscious.

Sam took a seat at his bedside. "How are you feeling Dad?" John waved off concern for him and asked immediately, "how's Dean?" Sam went over what the doctor had said in a wooden voice, finishing with, "but if they won't do anything, then we will. We'll just have to...I don't know..." The voice from earlier had used a phrase that he used now. "...find some hoodoo priest and lay some mumbo jumbo on him. Like before."

There was a gap of silence before John asked in a low voice, "where's the colt?" Sam opened his mouth in disbelief, swallowing back the initial response on the tip of his tongue long enough to say harshly, "your son is dying and you're asking about the colt??" Something flashed in John's dark eyes before he said calmly, "we're hunting this demon and now it's hunting us. We need that gun to protect ourselves should it find us first." Sam bit his lip. "It's in the trunk. I called Bobby to tow the Impala to his lot. He's about an hour away from where we crashed." John nodded in approval. "Good. You go meet up with Bobby and get the colt and bring it back. Have Bobby get these ingredients as well." He held out a sheet of paper, wincing. Sam glanced down at the list. "What's all this for Dad?" John settled back against his pillows. "Protection."

The first words out of Sam's mouth when he saw the smashed up Impala were "Dean's going to be pissed." Bobby circled the car, eyeing it. "To be honest Sam, this wasn't worth the tow. I don't think more than one thing survived. We'd be better off just scrapping it." "No." Sam stuffed the last of the Impala's secret weapons arsenal into a duffel bag and zipped it closed. "Dean would kill me. He'll want to fix this. If there's even one working piece, it's worth trying. We aren't just going to give up." He stared fiercely at Bobby. The expression on Bobby's face quite clearly read: "are we still talking about your brother's car or are we talking about your brother?" But to his credit all he said out loud was a simple, "Ok. You're right."

"Oh, one more thing." Sam shouldered the duffel bag and pulled out the list that John had given him. "Dad wants you to get him this stuff for protection against the demon while he and Dean are laid up in the hospital." Bobby scanned the list, his expression muddled. Sam tilted his head to one side. "Bobby, what's up?" Bobby tried to act dismissively. "Nothing, nothing, it's just..." Sam was not in the mood.

"Tell me."

"Come on Sammy" Dean begged as Sam pocketed the list and strode from the hospital. "You're the psychic one...tell me you can hear me at least a little!" But Sam simply hotwired a car and drove off without a single flash of recognition or acknowledgement. Dean returned to their father's room to find it empty. Following a hunch, he moved two rooms down the hall and there he was. Sitting at Dean's bedside, staring at his unconscious son. Dean leaned up against a wall and waited. And waited. And waited.

Finally, he burst out with, "aren't you going to pick up a phone and call someone for help? Aren't you going to do something? Say something??? Anything except sit in your damn chair and stare into space blankly??!!" Dean marched up beside his father with a tortured expression. "I have done everything you have ever asked me to do and more. I have given you everything. And after all that you're just going to watch me die?!"

And even though he knew his Dad couldn't hear him, it was almost as if he sensed how upset Dean's spirit was and instead of dealing with it or saying anything, he simply stood and returned to his own room. Dean trailed after him. They were both greeted with the sight of a livid Sam. "Did you think I wouldn't find out" Sam exploded, tossing down his duffel bag and the bag of supplies John had asked for next to it. John got back into his bed with another wince, settling down. "What are you talking about?" "The ingredients you had Bobby get are not for warding off a demon. They're for SUMMONING one! You're planning on bringing it here and having some stupid macho showdown aren't you??" Dean whipped his head around to stare at John, wondering if this were true. "Sam, I have a plan." John voice was calm. Sam's was not. "That's exactly my point Dad! Dean is dying and you have a plan! But not about saving him. This stupid obsession of yours is more important than your own son!" "Don't you dare tell me how I feel" John retaliated furiously. "And I seem to recall you having the same obsession! Just months ago you BEGGED me to be a part of this hunt!" "That's enough, the both of you!" Dean felt like banging his head against a wall. You know...if he wasn't basically a walking piece of air.

"I'm doing this FOR Dean" John continued insisting heatedly. Sam gave a bitter laugh. "How on earth is revenge going to help him??" "I SAID KNOCK IT OFF!" Dean was shouting at the top of his lungs, his frustrations at not being heard reaching their peak. It was bad enough when Sam and John fought when he was alive and solid and able to get between them physically. Now he just had to stand there and listen. He could have sworn he saw something register in Sam's eyes, indicating perhaps that his latest yell had been enough to break the sound barrier but before he could test this any further, there was commotion in the hallway and he fell to his knees, feeling weak and rubbery. "Go see what's happening" John ordered and this was one order that Sam did not hesitate in following. Dean forced himself to his feet and limped after Sam. What he saw made his heart stop.

Almost literally.

Sam stood frozen in the doorway to Dean's hospital room, something extremely hot blocking his throat, crushing his windpipe. Half-a-dozen doctors and nurses were crowded around Dean's lifeless body, trying to zap his breathing back to normal rather than the flat-line the monitor showed it to be. "Come on Dean" he prayed, a single tear leaking from his glassy eyes and trailing down his cheek, followed by a few more as the head doctor asked the rest of his staff to shock Dean again. It wasn't working. Dean was dying.

And then suddenly, just as it appeared that they were about to call time of death, one of the nurses gave a relieved smile and announced that they had a pulse. The monitor was showing zigzag lines now, indicating Dean's heart was back in working condition. Weak, but working. And in that moment, Sam heard, more clearly than he had all day, Dean's voice reverberating around inside of his head. But it wasn't really inside his head. It was more like Dean was standing right next to him or around the corner, just out of eye-shot.

Which gave Sam an idea.

The floating white creature above Dean's body was reaching out for his face. Dean ran straight at it, without really thinking through what he was going to do, other than just get that freakish thing far, far away from him. He knew somehow that if it touched his body...his actual body...he would be dead. And that was not going to happen. So he grabbed for it, surprised that even as a spirit and with it also being a spirit, he was able to place his hands around its neck. "GET AWAY FROM ME" he hollered. The creature must have been just as surprised as Dean because it gave him one last fleeting look and then vanished.

And it was in that moment that he knew Sam knew he was still around. He could see it on his brother's face. "Yes! Finally Sammy." Dean heaved a sigh of relief and followed as Sam fled the room. "I'm going to pick up something, I'll be back soon" Sam informed their father after having relayed all that had happened in Dean's room down the hall. "Where are you going" Dean asked rhetorically, knowing it wouldn't be answered. "We have work to do. We have to hunt that thing before it comes back for me again." But Sam was gone.

"Fine...I'll just stay here then" Dean said sarcastically to no one in particular. He turned to wander the hospital halls again and found himself face to face with a terrified looking girl. "Can you see me" she asked desperately. "Yes." Dean was stoked to be able to talk to someone again and have them actually reply, but he was less stoked because the poor girl was most likely very close to dying if he was able to see her and she was able to see him. "What's happening? Why can't anyone else see me??" She glanced left and right so fast that it looked like she had a twitch. Dean tried to calm her down. "Just take a deep breath. What's your name?" "Tessa." "Nice to meet you Tessa...I'm Dean." He gave her a small smile that she didn't return. "Am I dead?" Dean shook his head slowly. "That sort of depends. What were you here for?" "...I just came in for an appendectomy..." She lifted her shoulders and let them fall again helplessly before leading Dean to the door of a nearby room and peering inside. Noticing Tessa's body lying in bed with tubes much like Dean's own body, he couldn't help but saying, "well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think there were some complications."

Tessa stayed by her body, transfixed. Dean heard a fuzzy, far-off sound in his head that sounded like Sam calling his name. In three seconds he was back in his own room, watching Sam pull a Ouija board from a brown paper bag. Dean barely suppressed a groan.

"Oh you've got to be kidding me."

Sam could think of no other way short of a séance to talk with Dean if he was indeed still around. He knew Dean would think it was an incredibly ridiculous card to play but in the circumstances it was all he had. So he sat cross-legged on the ground, pulled the board free of its box and set everything up. "Dean...dean are you here?" He held his breath. And, slowly, but surely, the circular device he was touching with his fingers began the climb up the board towards the word 'yes'. Sam let out a relieved laugh. "Oh man, it's good to hear from you buddy. Things just aren't the same around here without you."

He was about to continue speaking, just casual chatting, but the circle began moving again, spelling out the word 'hunt'. Sam's brow furrowed. "What? Hunt?? There's something in the hospital?" 'Yes'. "What is it?" The letters spelled out 'reap' before Sam caught on. "A reaper" he concluded, his breathing getting shallower and shallower as he asked the question that was pounding away in his skull, refusing to be ignored. "Dean, is it after you?"

'Yes.'

Dean could see the panic and horrified alarm from this realization twisting his brother's features as the younger Winchester got to his feet, running one hand through his shaggy hair. "Ok" he breathed finally. "Ok, don't worry Dean, I'll figure something out." He paced the length of the room twice before wringing out his hands and deciding, "I'll go talk to Dad. He'll know what to do." Dean stayed where he was, perched on the window sill with his arms crossed defiantly. "Don't worry Sammy" he said to thin air. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to fight this thing and together, you and me...we'll get me back in my body."

Sam returned a few seconds later, looking harried. "Well Dad wasn't in his room but I got this." He held out the leather bound journal, showing his comatose brother the page he had opened it to, which was marked 'reaper'. Spirit Dean moved closer, peering over his brother's shoulder at the compiled information and his eyes widened a good deal. "Son of a bitch."

Dean flat-out sprinted through the hospital until he reached the room he was after. But instead of Tessa's body which had occupied it the last time he'd been there, now there was only Tessa herself, no longer dressed in a white tee-shirt and blue cotton pants like other hospitalized guests, including Dean, but in a tight black crop-top, black leather pants, and calf-high leather heeled boots. She had been perched on the edge of the bed but upon seeing Dean and, more importantly, the expression on his face, she straightened up. "I was wondering when you'd figure it out."

Dean leveled her with a wooden stare. "Well you read the most fascinating things these days...like did you know that reapers can appear in any form they want? Whatever appeals to who they're reaping...like, say, a pretty girl..." Tessa gave an innocent shrug, taking a step towards Dean. "You didn't give me much of a choice. You saw my true form and tried to strangle me." She gave a tiny shrug. "Sort of hurts a girl's feelings." Dean turned away from her, trying to keep it together, despite feeling like he was about to break down at any second. "Look...I know you probably get this a lot, but you have to make an exception here. I can't go. Not now." Tessa gave him a sympathetic smile. "Yes you can Dean. It's your time." "But my family is in danger" he insisted, feeling the tears start to rise. "My little brother could die if I'm not out there watching his back." "Maybe he will die...maybe he won't. It's not your decision Dean." Tessa took another step closer. Dean retreated hastily, feeling his back connect with the wall.

He was out of places to run.

Sam, unaware that Dean's spirit was no longer around, stood staring down at his brother's body, all choked up with emotions. "Dean...you can't go. Not now. Not...not when we were just starting to be brothers again man." The long car rides, the hunts...they were falling right back into step like it had been in the old days. It may have taken them a few months to get into the swing of things again and sure, they may have had a few bumps along the way, but could not think of a better man in the world to have as a brother. He sniffed back some tears. "You can't leave me here alone with Dad...we'll kill each other. You know we will." He and John may have had a few good moments recently but it always seemed to be one step forward, two steps back with them.

And then suddenly, out of nowhere, instead of talking to a stiff near-death patient, he was looking down at his brother whose eyes were open and who was nearly choking to death on the plastic tube in his mouth. To say he was startled would be an understatement. "Dean" he yelped in relief before flagging down a passing nurse who ran for a doctor. Within minutes, every single piece of machinery that had been holding Dean to life had been removed and unplugged. Dean was sitting up in bed, Sam standing at his side, both listening as the doctor, completely stumped, listed off all the things that had righted themselves within Dean. It was as if he had never been injured to begin with.

"A reaper" Dean echoed, trying to find a comfortable position on the bed. "You're serious? Like, a reaper, reaper?" And it was after me? "Yeah." Sam nodded in confirmation. "You really don't remember a thing?" Dean's eyes went fuzzy. "I remember yellow-eyes smoking out of Dad...I think I remember the crash...but after that, nothing." He furrowed his eyebrows, concentrating. "But I have this pit in my stomach...something's wrong Sammy." Having just gotten his brother back from the brink of death, Sam had a hard time believing anything could be wrong, but Dean's instincts were usually pretty good when it came to things like that. And there was the definite sound of footsteps approaching their room.

So he tensed, ready.

The sight of their father standing in the doorway of his room only intensified the cold block of dread in his stomach. He couldn't say exactly why but it probably had something to do with the teary, fond, sentimental way that John was looking at both of his sons. It was an expression Dean had never...absolutely never...seen there before. At least not to that degree. "How are you feeling Dean?" John pushed off the doorframe and limped the rest of the way into the room. "Fine." Dean shrugged. He was still a little shaky and sore...and majorly confused...but for the most part he really was fine. Whatever had healed him had done a damn good job.

Sam wasted no time. The first few lines of the battle went back and forth like a tennis match. "Where were you last night?" "Out." "Summoning the demon?" "No." Sam gave a bitter laugh. "You know, why am I having a hard time believing you right now?" Dean opened his mouth in exhaustion to give his usual 'enough already' demand but, surprisingly, John beat him to it. "Can we...can we not fight Sam? Please? I mean, half the time we're fighting and I don't even know what we're fighting about. I just..." He ran a hand over his disheveled face wearily. "I don't want to fight anymore." Sam swallowed hard. "Ok." Dean looked between his father and brother, if possible concerned even more with the truce than he was with the yelling. Something was definitely going on here.

"Dad are you ok" Sam wanted to know, clearly thinking along the same lines as his brother. John gave an attempt at a smile. "I'm fine Sammy. Just tired. Would you mind getting me a cup of coffee?" The second Sam was out of the room, John approached his older son, the threat of tears about to spill over. Dean's worry increased. "Dad, are you sure you're ok?" "I'm fine Dean" John assured him. "I just want you to know how proud I am of you." Dean lifted his gaze to meet John's, feeling his own tears rising. When Yellow-Eyes had posed as John and said he was proud, he had just brushed it off, but now that his Dad was saying it...really saying it...he was having trouble thinking straight. His dad was honestly and truly proud of him. It was something he'd wanted to hear his whole life. But now that he was hearing it, it scared him more than anything he'd heard or witnessed up until that point. And he said as much. "Dad, you're scaring me. What's going on?" "Don't be scared Dean" was all John said in response, a single tear leaking from one eye and trailing down his cheek. He leaned in and whispered something.

Something that corrected Dean's assumption that he couldn't be anymore scared of his father's current behavior than he already was.

Sam took his time getting the coffee. John's behavior was strange, verging on crazy...for him anyway...and it had Sam wondering what the hell was going on. Before leaving the room, he'd seen the same question written all over his brother's face. Still trying to piece together the real reason for John's sudden emotional vulnerability, Sam made his way back through the hospital halls. The closer he got to his father's room, the more intensified the pit in his stomach grew, making him wonder if Dean's declaration that something was wrong was more true than he was willing to believe.

And then he rounded the corner and saw that yes. Yes it was. Because there, lying in the center of the floor, clearly not breathing, was John Winchester.

Dropping the coffee without caring about the mess it made or how many people might slip because of it, Sam sprint into the room, shouting for all he was worth to attract the attention of as many doctors as possible. As half a dozen medical professionals surrounded John, moving him from the floor to the bed and beginning CPR, Sam ran off to help Dean hobble from his room to John's and both boys stood in the doorway, watching with baited breath and glassy eyes. At long last, the head doctor could do no more and called it:

"Time of death: 10:41am."
