The way she talked made Jove feel bad. He frowned after she had turned away. Did she blame him? Or herself? Between the two, Jove preferred she blame him for this. Blaming yourself did more damage to the psyche than blaming another. Jove felt the urge to coddle Zelda. He wanted somehow to wave his hand and make it all better. He could erase her memory and make her forget. But that wasn't fair. It wasn't fair to her or himself.
Jove slid out of bed and grabbed his boxers, slipping them on. He moved to his dresser and threw on whatever he grabbed first, which happened to be a pair of sweats and a t-shirt.
Zelda's clothes were scattered about the floor. Jove collected them and returned to the bed. He placed a hesitant, yet gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Zelda? I have your clothes...would you like to dress in the bathroom? Or...?" He offered the clothes to her. Jove figured she may find dressing in the bathroom more comfortable, and she could get some water if she wanted. Meanwhile, Jove would make her some tea.

Zelda resisted the urge the jerk away from Jove again and snap at him when he carefully touched her shoulder. He seemed so hesitant and it made Zelda feel guilty. She may not be entirely happy with him, but...she knew that it was probably wrong to blame him. After all, drunk or not, she didn't think that she would have done the deed unless she wanted to.
Still clutching the covers to her as tightly as possible, she turned to face him. "Yes, thank you. I'll change in the bathroom," she said, taking the clothes from him, feeling too ashamed to make eye contact with him. Really. Alcohol or not, she should have known better.
She collected the covers around her as she got up from the bed and headed for the bathroom, carefully shutting the door behind her. Zelda took a moment to look at herself in the mirror, cleaned up the slightly smeared make up and got dressed.
Tentatively, she exited the bathroom, leaving the blanket neatly folded on the bathroom counter, and headed to the kitchen. She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Carefully, she smoothed out the nonexistent wrinkles in her skirt and moved a bit further into the kitchen.
"Should I - should I find other means of employment?" she asked, wringing her hands together.
While Zelda took her time in the bathroom, Jove put on a kettle and heated water for tea. He scratched the back of his head, sighing deeply. He didn't know what to do or how to act. Jove liked Zelda. She was a very nice woman. He wondered if she would leave here and never return. That would hurt him. He'd been lonely for a long time. Her companionship had brought back a side of him he'd forgotten. It was slowly awakening.
By the time Zelda came out of his little bathroom, Jove was taking the kettle off the stove. It steamed and squealed from the heat. He retrieved two teacups and placed a bag of green tea in each. Jove wasn't sure Zelda liked green tea. He hoped she did. Green tea was good for the mind and soul. It was also very healthy.
Jove poured the steaming water into the cups before turning to Zelda. He noted the way she simply opened her mouth, but was without words. He tried to smile to encourage her to speak up, but the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach stopped the smile from reaching his eyes.
Her question caught him off-guard. Jove straightened, opening his mouth and stumbling over his words.
"W-what? No! No...that won't be necessary. Not in the least! Not unless you want to..." His voice grew quieter at the end. The thought of her leaving made him ache. He didn't want to be alone again. He tired of it. Jove wanted her to stay, and he'd do anything she wanted for it.
Still, it was her decision.
Jove recovered from his outburst and gestured to the tea, "I made some tea for you. I was thinking it'd help your headache. Would you like to have a seat...?"

She felt herself get somewhat weak at the knees when he looked up from fixing the tea and smiled at her. Zelda shook her head to refocus her brain. No, no, no, she most certainly could not be thinking that way.
Zelda raised her eyebrows and took a step back, surprised by Jove's sudden outburst. "Well, no," she said, waving her hands in front of her,"I certainly don't want to leave. I just...well, after what happened last night...wouldn't it be a little inappropriate for us to continue working together?" She really didn't to leave him the library; she adored working there.
She smiled and nodded before moving forward and sliding into one of the chairs. "Thank you," she said, before picking up one of the cups and holding it in her hand to feel the warmth. She took a sip.
"I apologize, Mr. Laevinus," she said, setting the tea down and folding her hands in her lap,"If I hadn't come up last night, none of this would have happened."
Relief swept over him and Jove relaxed. She didn't want to leave. That was good. He didn't want her to leave, either. He sat down in a chair after placing their two cups on the table and folded his hands in front of him.
"I believe it's only considered inappropriate if we had an intimate, yet no serious, relationship through a period of time. It's called a boss-employee relationship, right? It's wrong for the fact the boss holds all the power and can use that power to be abusive. Otherwise, this was just..."
Jove trailed off. He couldn't say a mistake. That was rude and inconsiderate. So what was it? An accident? That also seemed...wrong...of him to say. It made him feel like he was putting her down, or making her inadequate in some way. Jove didn't want to do that. So he gave up. Jove shook his head to signal he had no idea what to call it. It was better to say nothing at all than to take a chance of saying the wrong thing.
"I want you to keep working with me, Zelda. I care for you not only as a boss, but as a friend as well."
His hands unfolded and grabbed his tea. Jove lifted it to his lips and felt the hot liquid burn his tongue as he took a sip. He didn't mind it. Jove was used to drinking burning hot teas. He only sat his tea down once Zelda spoke. A look of surprise crossed his face.
"No, that's not true...Zelda..." Jove took her hand and held it in his. "What happened is not your fault in any way. Agreeing to my offer to help you never meant this was bound to happen. It just...did."
Jove drew his hand away and rested it on the table.
"If anything, it's both our faults. Though, I'd prefer to agree that this was no one's fault at all."

Zelda bit her lip and ran her finger around the rim of her tea cup as she listened to Jove speak. "Mistake?" she asked, wincing as she finished the sentence for him. She wasn't sure if that's what she thought it was. If only she could remember the actual experience. Perhaps that might make her feel a bit better about the whole situation.
"Don't you think it would be...awkward?" she asked, tilting her head to the side and bringing her hand up to rub the back of her neck. Zelda wasn't sure how they would get past the awkwardness.
Jove surprised her once again when he contradicted her and took her hand in his. She felt a light blush arise in her cheeks caused by a mixture of the sudden contact and what Jove said.
"Oh, I suppose you're right. Either way, there's no sense in blaming either of us. What's done is done," she said, before taking another sip of her tea.
Jove cringed at the word 'mistake.' It unsettled him to hear it spoken aloud. It couldn't be the right word for what happened. It couldn't be. There had to be another word that wasn't so...awful.
"I...think that's too harsh a word..." was his soft response. "I don't know what word to call it, but a mistake...it's not that."
With a slow nod of agreement about blaming no one, Jove returned to his tea. He looked down at it, watching the steam die away as it grew cooler. Jove sipped it and flicked his eyes up to watch Zelda. There was still something lovely about her, even when she drank her tea. He couldn't place what it was. Zelda just had that natural grace that a woman had. Jove found it admirable.
Then the question came to mind. Jove froze. He slowly set his tea down and chewed his lower lip. It was a question that had to be asked, but it was going to make everything more awkward than it was. That didn't matter so much to Jove. Zelda's well-being was much more important than salvaging a situation that was already quite awkward.
"Uh....Zelda...may I ask you something?" Jove asked. His voice was quiet, almost timid. He rubbed the back of his head and cleared his throat. "Was last night....a 'safe' day for you...?"

Zelda cast her eyes down when she saw Jove cringe at her word choice. Not knowing what to say, she merely pursed her lips and took another sip of tea. A mistake? An accident? What else was there to call it if it was something that they didn't mean to let happen and that they both seemed to regret?
She delicately swallowed her tea and forced her eyes to look back at Jove's face when he spoke again. Zelda was certainly not prepared for the question that Jove had in mind to ask. She could practically feel the anger and humiliation pulsing through her veins as she slowly set her tea cup down on the table and she leaned back.
Zelda clenched her jaw and slowly let out a sigh. "You have nothing to worry about," she said, looking away from him and folding her hands in her lap again.
She stared very hard at the back of the kitchen wall, trying not to let on how completely humiliated she had been by his question. "Perhaps it would be best if I just left," she said, sliding out of the chair and wringing her hands together.
She was not taking his question well. Jove hadn't thought she would. He also hadn't thought she'd become angry enough to get up and leave. Jove got to his feet in sync with Zelda. He raised his hands in means of submission.
"Zelda, I'm sorry," he spoke quickly. "I didn't mean to...offend...you, if that's what I did. I didn't mean to do anything. I'm just concerned. I'm concerned for you and your well-being. Please, forgive me for asking. I ...I had no intention to hurt, humiliate, or anger you in any way..."
His face was contorted with worry. The question had been a wrong step. The way she said he had nothing to worry about made Jove wonder. Did she think he asked for his own sake? That he'd asked in fear that he would become stuck as a father? No. It wasn't true. Sure, Jove had some concerns about that for reasons obvious to him. But it'd not been the drive for him to question her.
I should have asked the question more considerately. Maybe that would have been better...
His worry gave way to sadness. Jove slumped his shoulders in defeat. He had no experience with this. He didn't know what to say, or what to do. It wasn't an excuse. Jove felt like he was millions of years old and he couldn't handle even this situation correctly. It was the self-doubt his father had instilled in him. Sometimes it came up. Jove did his best to keep it down.
"Please...just...don't go...yet..." He said dejectedly. "Finish tea with me? Then...then I will give you all the time you need."

Zelda halted on her way towards the door when she realized just how quickly Jove had gotten to his feet in order to stop her. She crossed her arms over her chest and frowned. Her anger had gotten the better of her once again and she had acted too hastily. However, she hadn't expected Jove to be so concerned for her.
"I didn't think you would be so concerned about me," she admitted, glancing to the side. Zelda had misjudged him in that moment, thinking that he was just worried about becoming a father, not that he was worried about her.
"I'm sorry that's just not - well, it's just not something appropriate to discuss," she said, forcing herself to look back at him, feeling ashamed of herself and her lack of control, regarding her anger.
She bit her lip, feeling even worse when she saw just how upset Jove was. "I - yes, yes. I'll stay," she said, moving back to the table and sitting down, resting her head in her hand. She corrected her posture and took another sip of tea.
"Of course I'm concerned...you're my friend, Zelda. I'll do anything if you need me to," Jove slid back into his seat. Crisis avoided. He made note to watch his words more closely. This situation was shaky. If he messed up, then he'd be misunderstood and he might chase Zelda off. He didn't want that. "I apologize again for asking. I wasn't aware it was inappropriate to discuss. I just want to help if you need me."
His tea was cold by now. Jove didn't pay any mind to that fact as he gulped it down. With a soft sigh, he set the cup back down on the table. He hoped that Zelda got the message. Jove was there to help her through anything that might result from this. He was there for her in general.
"Is it wrong to ask what's going through your mind right now? Is there anything I can do...?" Jove was cautious. He was willing to talk about things if she wanted to. If she didn't, then he would keep his mouth shut. Though, something nagged at Jove. He realized that he did want to discuss it. Shutting it off because it was inappropriate...bothered him. It may be inappropriate, but it was a fact that it happened. They had to discuss it sometime. But Jove was patient. He'd wait for her.

Zelda face softened and she dropped her arms down, completely touched by Jove's words. She had never met anyone quite like Jove before. He was so sweet and genuine. She doubted that he had a cruel bone in his body. She was touched that he seemed to be so concerned about her when they didn't even know each other that well.
"If something had happened, I would have just handled it on my own and told if I was...expecting," she said, choosing her words carefully.
Zelda absolutely hated to ask for help from other people, no matter who it was. She liked to deal with things on her own and not bother other people with her problems.
She sighed and nervously bit on her thumb nail. Her eyes flashed up to Jove's when he spoke again. She sighed again and leaned back in her chair. "I suppose I'm thinking about how ashamed I feel more than anything," she said, casting her eyes down as soon as the words left her mouth.
Ashamed. Jove could understand that, but was also puzzled by it. He cocked his head. Zelda was a very proper woman. That was something he was learning. She followed very old-fashioned kinds of thoughts while Jove was freer in his thinking. It was one of their biggest differences that he'd observed so far. It was also, so far, the trickiest one. It was sometimes hard to understand why Zelda responded the way she did and acted the way she did.
"Can you tell me why you feel that way...? I want to understand. Is it because we didn't really plan this? And we don't exactly know each other too well?"
People had sex all the time without knowing each other. That was freer thinking. It was modern. That's why it didn't apply to Zelda. Jove figured she thought it was improper of her to sleep with him. It could even be shaming on herself and her family, if she went that far back in her traditions. Pregnancy would tip that off the scales. Jove dearly hoped that didn't happen. As much as he loved children, it wasn't the right time.

Zelda bit her bottom lip and took a moment to collect her thoughts. "It's...so much," she said, shaking her head and brushing some hair out of her face. There were so many aspects that made this situation bad.
"Yes, it's those things you mentioned. We hardly know each other, we're not in a relationship, you're my employer and I - I hadn't been planning on doing anything like this until...until I was married," she said, wringing her hands together in her lap. Oh, she couldn't remember the last time she had been this anxious.
She dreaded to think of what her family might think of her if they were to find out. They would all be disappointed in her. Zelda wasn't sure which one would be the worst, since she held all of their opinions of her in very high esteem, save for her sister's. Oh, if Marie found out about it, Zelda would never hear the end of it.
Jove listened to her reasons without judgment. He nodded understandingly at the end. Jove could see where she was coming from. It wasn't a bad choice to wait until one was married, or at least to know their partner a little better. Jove felt a little bad for taking her first time away. If she wanted it to be special, then it should have been. Now it was too late.
He was determined to make it up to her.
Jove sat with Zelda for a little longer, until her tea was gone, then stood with a genuine smile.
"It's almost noon. I don't think it's wise to spend the entire day in here. Come, I'll escort you out."
Taking Zelda's hand and helping her out of the seat, Jove went with her to his door. He didn't think he should give Zelda time off work. With her personality, he feared she would see it in the wrong light. So, he would act like he was going to see her bright and early. If she called in on her own account, then that was fine, too.
"I'll see you soon, Zelda," Jove said as he opened the door for her. His smile grew more broad. It was reminiscent of the old, happy smile he usually wore on his face. A light teasing shine came to his eyes. "Oh, and may I request just one small thing..."
Jove stood in the doorway, now grinning from ear to ear as he teased her.
