The Cannery was a pretty big building with many twists and turns so it was unsurprising to Sam that they couldn't keep up with Samuel and had to return to Bobby and Rufus empty handed. "We lost him" Dean announced as they each picked up their gun from the table, checked the clip and then tucked them out of sight in the back of their pants beneath their shirts. "So what's the plan now" Sam wanted to know, looking around at the others. "We stick together" Dean announced, taking charge. "We got to keep track of this thing, and more importantly, who it's in." It sounded like a good plan to Sam so he fell in step behind his brother, in front of Rufus and Bobby. And for awhile the only sound was their footsteps echoing off the factory’s bare walls.
Then suddenly, and Sam couldn’t say exactly why his gaze was drawn downward at that very moment, he noticed a very thin, nearly invisible line of wire which could only mean one thing. So instinctively he reached forward, grabbed his brother by the shoulders and yanked him backwards. Rufus and Bobby pulled their guns, aiming them at Sam with suspicious looks. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.” Sam held up his hands. “Hold on. Look.” Tilting his flashlight down, he showed them all the wire and then ran his light the length of that wire and up to the ceiling where a bucket full of sharp nails was waiting. “Booby trap” Dean declared, studying it. Rufus and Bobby put away their guns, looking impressed. Rufus let out a low whistle. “Well I’ll be damned.” “Nice catch Sam” Dean complimented, exhaling deeply and taking a very cautious step over the wire, careful not to nudge it even the slightest. Sam followed and then Rufus and Bobby took their turns. Once all four of them were clear, they continued onwards, this time with Sam in the lead.
It only took another few minutes before the next catastrophe struck. Sam had taken one step through a doorway when it slammed behind him, separating him from the other three. Spinning around on the spot, Sam slammed one fist into the solid barrier. “Dean!” Dean’s returning shout was muffled. “Sam! You ok?” “I’m fine” Sam promised, drawing in and then letting out a deep, focusing breath. “I’m going to go around.” There had to be another way back to where he’d just come from, other than through the door. “Be careful” Dean warned protectively from the other side. Swallowing hard, Sam pulled his gun, made sure the safety was off, and then began to move stealthily through the building, keeping all senses on red alert. Rounding the next corner Sam found himself face to face with Samuel.
"Don't move!" Sam trained his gun on Samuel, his heart racing. "Sam." Samuel took a step towards Sam with an odd expression on his face. "Put your gun down" Sam demanded, holding his ground. "What you gonna do, son" Samuel challenged, continuing to advance slowly. "You're not gonna shoot me. You got your soul back. You gonna shoot your own family?" "Yeah, I wouldn't go with the family thing" Sam reminded him in a flat tone with a humorless smile. "Try again." "Mary's still my daughter." Samuel took another step. "Don't move" Sam ordered, tensing. "And you're still named after me." "I said don't move" Sam snapped, his finger tightening against the trigger. Samuel hesitated, eyes on Sam's face. "Appears to be our moment, Sam" he observed. "You still want to know about your summer vacation? I'll tell you all about it. You're dying to know, huh?" "Yeah, I do" Sam admitted, lowering his gun slightly. "Well then let's just put these down and talk" Samuel suggested without actually making a move to drop his own gun. He took another step in Sam's direction, putting him within reaching distance. "Stop" Sam insisted desperately. "It's alright Sam." Samuel started to raise one hand. Without hesitating or letting him finish that move, Sam pulled the trigger.
As Samuel dropped like a stone to the ground, the sound of rushing footsteps approaching met Sam's ears. "Sam!" Dean's anxious shout joined the footsteps as he, Bobby, and Rufus rounded the corner, skidding to a halt at the sight that met their eyes. "Oh thank god." For maybe half a second they all looked relieved to find Sam unharmed and then all three expressions grew wary. "Drop the gun, Sam" Bobby instructed. Sam held up his gun free hand to show he meant no harm as he lowered the gun to the ground and kicked it over to Dean. "It's me" he promised. "Okayyy..." Rufus dragged out the word as he approached skeptically with a zip cuff that he looped around Sam's wrists behind his back and tightened. "That's great, Sam. Just got to cuff you, uh, till we can be sure, okay? You understand, right?" Sam put up no physical struggle to the binding of his wrists but he did verbally insist once more, "it's in HIM." "Are you sure?" Bobby stared hard at him in a sort of "I want to believe you but I'm not sure I can" kind of way. Sam shifted his gaze over to Dean who looked torn as to how he should be feeling. "Uh, yeah, yeah, I think so" Sam finally answered, glancing back down at Samuel's corpse. "You see anything come out of him...after he dropped" Rufus wanted to know, everyone else's eyes following Sam's. Sam tried to remember but he'd been caught up in the moment and the adrenaline. So he gave his head half a shake. "No."

"Tell me you got something." Dean was biting his lip hard, looking ill. The four of them were standing around the table back in the room they'd come from, Samuel's body on it, Bobby mid-swab of his ear. "Nothing." Bobby pulled out the swab, showing them all the pure white cotton, free of black goo. Sam's heart flipped over. "What?? You mean...you mean he wasn't a monster when I ganked him?" "One way to find out" Rufus remarked, turning to Bobby. "Bobby, you got a cranial saw in the car?" Bobby stared at him as though he'd just asked if he'd breathed that day. "Of course." He took a step towards the door. "You're not going alone" Dean insisted, beginning to follow him, but Rufus shook that off, doing it himself. "Oh, no, he won't. He won't. We will both go grab some tools and see about getting some better power in this place. And I want you and you to-" Rufus pointed from Sam to Dean and then paused and started over. "– okay, I want you and you to watch him and him and-" Getting himself all mixed up with the pointing again, Rufus threw up both hands and made it much simpler. "– all right, if anything crawls out of anybody, somebody step on it." "Yeah, don't worry. I'll watch Samuel" Sam promised.
"Dean will watch me."
