ooc; SEASON FIVE. EPISODE NINETEEN.

The boys had been driving for a few hours down the highway when there had been a sign for a bridge out ahead and instructions to follow the detour signs. Now they were driving down a stretch of road, not populated by too many people or buildings, when a flat out flood of water opened up from the skies, making it nearly impossible to see through the windshield or keep the car on the road. "Maybe we should stop somewhere" Dean suggested, his grip on the steering wheel an iron one. Sam squinted through the ominous weather, noticing a hotel up ahead but not exactly getting a warm and cozy feeling about it. "I think maybe we should just keep driving" was his own suggestion but Dean ignored it, pulling into the parking lot of the swanky hotel, parking near the door and sprinting for it without waiting for Sam.

Sam sighed, waited another second and then followed his brother, trying to shake the uneasy feeling.

It didn't work.

Dean stepped into the beautifully furnished hotel lobby, soaked to the bone and gasping for breath after his little sprint through the deluge of water. "Wow." He whistled, looking around, as Sam came up behind him, equally as drenched. "Nice digs for once." Ignoring the uneasy expression on his brother's face, Dean made his way up to the front desk to check in. "Busy night, huh" he observed as the receptionist, a man with the nametag "Chad" got their paperwork started. "A port in the storm I guess" Chad agreed, smiling and sliding the top sheet of paperwork across the desk. "If you could just sign here, sir." "Sure, of course." Dean looked down at the paper, lifting a pen and scrawling one of his many fake names across the bottom with a flourish. "Sir...I think you've got a little shaving nick there" Chad announced, taking the paper back with one hand and producing a tissue with their other, which he handed to Dean graciously. "Thanks." Dean absently blot at the gash on his neck, trying to remember the last time he'd shaved, which he sworn hadn't been so recently that he wouldn't have noticed he'd cut himself. But he quickly pushed this unimportant thought aside, accepting the key that Chad was now holding out. "Hey, you wouldn't happen to have a coffee shop, would you?" "Buffet" Chad informed him proudly, pointing. "All you can eat. Best pie in the tristate area." Dean's eyes lit up. "You don't say."

Dean stood with a full plate in front of the buffet table, sampling the different pies with one finger, trying to decide on the perfect dessert to bring back to the table with the rest of the mountain of food he'd already acquired. A small, portly man, holding a plate with about half the amount of Dean's, stepped up next to the older Winchester, reaching for a piece of the chocolate pie with a ravenous expression. "Heaven, right" he half-asked, half-stated, loading the largest piece left onto his plate hungrily. Dean slid a thick piece of pumpkin pie onto his own plate with a scoff and shake of the head. "Trust me pal...better." The other man, obviously not realizing Dean was being serious and thinking he was just going for a better metaphor, smiled, nodded, and wandered off. Dean pinched a chocolate dipped strawberry between two fingers, lifted it from one of the cheesecakes and dropped it into his mouth before sauntering off towards where he'd left Sam.

Halfway there he spotted a beautiful woman sitting alone at a table, nursing a martini. Dean put on the brakes, rerouting himself in that direction. "Hey." He flashed her a charming smile. She looked up at him briefly and then back to her drink, unimpressed. "No." Dean swallowed the rest of his strawberry and tried again. "But"- "No" she interrupted again, this time without looking up. Dean smiled awkwardly. "Look, lady, I was just"- "I understand." She looked up once more, dismissing him with her cold eyes. "And no." "10-4" Dean agreed, backing off and returning to his and Sam's table, the latter of whom was staring off into space, still looking unsettled. "Sam." Dean dropped his plate onto the table to get the younger Winchester's attention, sliding into his chair. "Unpucker man" he ordered, gesturing at his mound of food. "Eat something." Sam ignored the food. "We should hit the road Dean" he suggested instead. Dean's eyes widened. "In this storm?? It's...it's..." "Biblical, exactly" Sam finished urgently, leaning forward in his chair. "It's friggin' Noah's ark out there, and we're eating pie." He eyed the plate between them with distaste. "How many hours of sleep did you get this week" Dean demanded, ignoring the jab against his pie. "What? Three? Four?" Sam looked away without answering but Dean didn't really need an answer to know he was right. "Look, Bobby's got his feelers out, okay" he promised. "And we have talked with every hoodoo man and root woman in 12 states." "Yeah, well, I'm not giving up" Sam argued, flopping back in his chair, looking agitated. "Nobody's giving up" Dean countered fiercely. "Especially me." He pushed the plate to one side of the table, leaning even further forward so that even with Sam leaning back, their faces were still about a few inches apart. "We're gonna find a way to beat the devil, okay? Soon. I can feel it. And we will find Cas, we'll find Adam. But you are no good to me burnt out" he finished with a great deal of insistence, trying to drive his point home.

For a few long seconds, they simply stared at each other. Then finally Sam sighed heavily and nodded his agreement. "Yeah, ok." Dean relaxed his posture finally, leaning back again and pulling the plate closer with an eager smile. "Come on, we've actually got the night off for once" he pointed out, picking up the slice of pie first. "Let's try to enjoy it."

He was certainly going to.

"Ok" Sam repeated, trying to loosen the tense muscles of his shoulders so he could do as his brother was doing and settle back in his chair. He swirled the cup of coffee in front of him a few times before swigging it down and waiting impatiently, though trying not to appear so, for Dean to finish eating his massive smorgasbord. When he'd finally done so, the pair of them headed for the room Chad had given them the key to, on the third floor. Sam had barely slipped the key into the doorknob when Dean elbowed him and pointed, grinning immaturely. A few feet from them, at the doorway to the room next to theirs was a couple making out passionately, the woman's back pressed up against the door while the man groped for its knob so they could get inside, obviously to get to a point a little more intimate than they were already doing. Sam rolled his eyes and shouldered open their own door. "Oh what are you, twelve?"

"I'm young at heart." Dean gave a good natured shrug and the brothers entered their room, closing the door behind them. "Wow." Dean looked around the large, ornately decorated room, impressed. "Look at this. We're like Rockefellers." His eyes fell upon the lavish wrapped chocolates placed on each of the well fluffed pillows and lit up. "Chocolates!" Moving quickly, he flopped down onto the bed, scooping up the first, then glancing over at Sam hopefully. "You want yours?" Sam was too busy being distracted by how weird this all was to care about chocolates. "Knock yourself out" he muttered, frowning. "Hey Dean..." The older Winchester glanced up from the pillows, his mouth full of chocolate. "What?" Sam gestured at their fancy room. "Isn't this place kind of... in the middle of nowhere?" Dean gave an uninterested shrug, swallowing both chocolates. "So?" "So what's a four-star hotel doing on a no-star highway" Sam wondered aloud, the unsettled feeling he'd had since they had first stepped foot in the hotel only intensifying over time.

Dean opened his mouth but before he could respond, their conversation as well as the background moaning and bedspring creaking of the next door couple was interrupted by a sudden deafening crash that shook the walls. Dean got to his feet. The boys exchanged a look and then moved quickly back into the hallway and over to the next door which Sam knocked on a few times, unanswered, before gently pushing it open. "Hello?" The room was in total shambles, furniture toppled and smashed. Sam took a few more hesitant steps forward. "Hello??" No answer. He glanced over one shoulder at Dean and gave his head a slight shake. Dean's eyes had found something else besides the ramshackled furniture and he knelt to pick it up, holding it up in the light for Sam to get a good look at. The woman's wedding ring. They had to find out what had happened here.

Fast.

"Excuse me?" Sam stepped up to the main desk, clearing his throat to get Chad's attention. Chad looked up from his computer, attention smile at the ready. "Yes?" Dean stepped up beside his brother. "The, uh, the room next to ours -- t-the couple that are, uh, joined at the lips..." He smiled awkwardly before finishing the question. "Have you seen them?" "Mr. and Mrs. Logan" Chad clarified, beginning to punch a few keys rapidly. "The honeymooners?" He glanced down at whatever his key punching had recovered quickly and then back up, smile still in place without missing a beat. "They checked out." He glanced between the brothers. "Is something wrong?" Sam stared. "They checked out??" "Mm-hmm." Chad nodded. "Just now." "Really??" Sam continued staring. "Because it sort of seemed like they were, uh...in the middle of something." "Yeah, it's kind of weird for honeymooners to, uh, check out without this" Dean added, holding up the ring. "Oh, dear." Chad took the ring, still smiling. "Well, I'll just put that right in the lost and found. Don't you worry." He tucked it away out of sight beneath the desk, looking between the brothers once more. "Is there anything else I can help you with?" The boys exchanged a look. Dean took half a step backwards, shaking his head. "Uh, no...no we're good." Sam could see that Dean now shared his feeling that there was something off here. It would be impossible not to see that. Chad beamed at them. "Super fantastic." He went back to his computer as the boys headed a few paces away to consult. Sam had only one word to deliver.

"Creepy."

Dean gave a grim nod. "Broke the needle" he agreed, gesturing first at himself, then Sam. "All right, well, I'll scope out the joint, and you keep an eye on Norman Bates over here." Heaving a heavy sigh of frustration, he finished the instructions with an exasperated, "I mean, one night off. Is that too much to ask??"

His tour of the hotel lasted only about half an hour before coming upon his first strange element. Passing by the open door of a first floor room, his eyes landed upon a 600 pound elephant just sort of standing in the middle of the room. An elephant. Doing a double take, Dean backtracked to get a closer look and instead found himself staring at a pretty heavyset african american man wrapping a towel around his waist. "Hey man, this ain't no peep show" the man hollered, rushing to close his door in Dean's face. "What the..." Dean stared at the closed door for another minute before shaking his head and finishing his rounds, meeting Sam in the entryway to the lobby an hour later. Sam promptly explained that he'd lost Chad within a few minutes of following him and Dean returned the favor by explaining about his little adventure.

"An elephant" Sam echoed in bald shock. "An elephant" Dean reiterated, nodding. "Like...like an elephant??" Sam seemed to be having trouble processing this. Dean led his brother into the lobby, clarifying with, "like full on Babar." Sam opened his mouth, then closed it, apparently at a loss for words, and then tried again. "So what the hell is"- Dean didn't have to ask why Sam had stopped mid-question or mid-step. The lobby, which had been bursting with activity and people only a few hours back when they'd first arrived, was now completely empty and silent. Sam posed a new question. "Where is everyone??" Dean shrugged, baffled, moving around to check the far corner of the room in case anyone was hiding back there for some reason but it was just as empty as the main portion.

Sam, meanwhile, had moved over to the front doors and was pushing on them when Dean approached. "Let me guess -- it's locked." There was no need for Sam to answer. It wasn't really a question or a guess. Dean took a final glance around the empty room. "So what -- the roaches check in, they don't check out?" Sam straightened up, his hand falling from the locked doorknob with a look of dawning comprehension. "Think about how we got here. That detour on I-90? The friggin' hurricane?" The same look of dawning comprehension spread its way across Dean's face next. "You're saying we were led here?" It was only half a question this time but Sam answered anyway. "Like rats in a maze." That could never really point to anything positive. Dean exhaled sharply.

"Awesome."

The only place Dean hadn't really gotten around to checking in his hour and a half tour of the hotel was the kitchen so that was his and Sam's next destination. No one seemed to be in there either and the only sound to be heard was the quiet bubbling from a giant vat of red liquid on the largest stove's burner. "Please be tomato soup, please be tomato soup" Dean muttered to himself, approaching cautiously and giving it a stir with the wooden spoon already inside the pot. An eyeball floated to the top, causing Dean to drop the spoon and take a quick step back, looking revolted. "Motel hell" he informed his brother, who had already passed the appliances and was making his way towards a large walk in freezer at the back of the room. Dean quickened his pace, catching up with Sam just before he'd reached it and they both peered inside. The man who'd declared the pies at the buffet heaven suddenly slammed his fists against the door from the inside, causing both brothers to jump back, startled. "Help us!! Get us out of here!" They could now see all the rest of the hotel guests crammed in there as well. Without being needed to be told twice, Sam reached into his pocket, removed his lock-pick set, pulled out two of the picks and began jimmying the lock. "Hurry up" Dean urged, knowing it couldn't be long before someone came back for their hostages.

"I'm going as fast as I..." Sam had glanced up mid-sentence and trailed off with a look of alarm. "...can." Dean didn't need to turn around to understand the expression. Sadly, this was not uncommon for them. He sighed heavily.

"There's someone behind me, isn't there?"

It was not a very long struggle. Rather than just 'someONE' being behind Dean, there were four someones behind him, all seven feet tall and extremely muscular. All the boys could do was throw a few punches each before allowing themselves to be dragged into a large, ornate dining room area down the hall where several name-tag wearing people were all seated, conversing, though the conversation came to a dead halt as the boys were pushed roughly forward into the room. "Ladies and Gentleman" the man at the head of the table with the name "Baldur" on his chest announced grandly, pointing. "Our guests of honor have arrived."

Sam glanced over at Dean, the unsettled expression on his face a mirror image of what Sam imagined was on his own face. There had to be at least a dozen people staring at them, none looking very pleasant. "Ahem...dinner is served." Chad...now wearing a nametag that read "Mercury"...interrupted the little staring match by wheeling a covered tray into the room and removing the lid with a flourish. Settled on the silver tray in the center was a human head glazed with some kind of sauce, an apple in its mouth. The name-tag wearing occupants of the room applauded politely, looking impressed. Sam had difficulty not audibly gagging. Beside him, Dean was piping up with a hasty, "you know...this seems like a nice little dinner party...we don't want to intrude so we'll just..." He took a step backwards, Sam mirroring the action. Unfortunately before they could take so much as one more step, two hands shot out to shove them forcibly down into the two remaining chairs at the end of the table. Sam winced at the contact as Baldur continued his little introductory speech. "Ladies and gentleman, thank you for coming. Although in all my centuries, I never thought I'd see this. This many Gods under one roof." He gave a regal gesture at the other eleven. "Gods" Sam muttered in alarm to Dean under his breath, though he really shouldn't have been so surprised. Looking around, the names on the nametags were starting to become familiar, jogging his memory from a few different classes he'd taken at Stanford. Baldur, Kali, Ganesh, Odin...the list went on.

"--Now, before we get down to brass tacks, some ground rules" Baldur went on sternly. "No slaughtering each other. Curb your wrath." He seemed about to be done but then chuckled and threw another rule out there. "Oh, and uh, keep your hands off the local virgins. We're trying to keep a low profile here." The others chuckled with him. Then Baldur grew serious again and resumed his earlier speech. "Now we all know why we're here. The Judeo-Christian apocalypse looms over us. I know we've all had our little disagreements in the past but the time has come to put those aside and look toward the future. Because if we don't, we won't have one. Now we do have two very valuable bargaining chips." He took a long swig of some kind of alcoholic beverage, then placed the glass on the table and pointed dramatically at the boys. "Michael, and Lucifer's vessels." The interest in the room visibly peaked, each member in attendance studying the boys like they were going to be desert after the head first course. Sam felt his heart sink. He swapped another look with his brother, keeping his voice low.

"Oh we are so screwed."

Dean could not have phrased it any better. Baldur was still speaking. "The question is, what do we do with them now? Anybody have any bright ideas? Speak up. This is a safe room." The god named Zao Shen spoke up immediately with passion. "What do we do? We kill them of course!" Dean was obviously not a fan of this idea. Before he could object, the god Ganesh...whom Dean recognized as the man who'd replaced the elephant...and it made a lot more sense now...was adding his own two sense with a laugh. "Kill 'em? What, so the angels can bring them back again?" "I don't know what everybody's getting so worked up about" Odin threw out, shaking his head. "This is just a couple of angels having a slap fight! There's no Armageddon. Everybody knows, when the world comes to an end, the Great Serpent Jormungandr rises up, and I myself will be eaten by a big wolf!" He chuckled a deep belly laugh. Zao Shen rolled his eyes. "Oh here we go." Odin's smile faded into a bitter scowl. "Oh yeah? And why is that? Because your beliefs are so much more realistic? The whole world's getting carried around on the back of a giant turtle? Ha! Give me a break!" "Don't mock my world turtle" Zao Shen snapped defensively. "What are you gonna do about it" Odin challenged mockingly. Zao Shen rose to his feet, fists clenched. "I'm gonna send you packing to Valhalla!" Odin was on his feet now too. "You watch your mouth when you talk to me, boy" he threatened. Most of the gods seemed pretty invested in seeing how this argument turned out, which distracted them from the original purpose of the meeting. Dean elbowed his brother subtly and the two of them slowly stood, beginning to creep towards the exit. They'd only gotten one step in that direction when the heavy glass chandelier shattered to the ground between them and the door. Apparently one god had still been paying attention to them.

Kali...who Dean recognized as the woman who'd shot him down in the lobby earlier...stood slowly, speaking in a dangerous tone. "Stay." The boys turned back around to face the room at large reluctantly. Kali let out a deep breath and then declared, "we have to fight. The archangels -- the only thing they understand is violence. This ends in blood. There is no other way, it's them, or it's us." Mercury lifted one hand timidly. "With all due respect, ma'am, we haven't even tried talking to...to them..." He faltered under her scorching stare, suddenly beginning to choke and splutter up blood. This went on for a few long drawn out seconds before Baldur rolled his eyes and stated her name pointedly. "Kali..." After another second, Kali released Mercury, looking annoyed. "Who asked you??" There was an icy silence following this rhetorical question, which was broken up by the sound of the doors slamming open and a jovial voice drawling, "can't we all just get along?" The voice was too familiar to forget.

Half turning, Dean opened his mouth curiously to address the room's newest occupant, but he'd barely gotten the "G" out of his mouth when Gabriel had waved one hand dismissively and Dean found himself unable to speak. "Sam! Dean..." Gabriel saluted them both with a grin. "It's always wrong place, worst time with you muttonheads, huh?" Dean scowled. The sensation of his tongue curling up inside his mouth was a non too pleasant one. As he opened and closed his mouth a few times, Gabriel and the gods were communicating in the background. Baldur did not sound too pleased to see Gabriel. Nor did he call him Gabriel. "Loki." "Baldur." Gabriel inclined his head in greeting, not looking overly enthusiastic on his part either. "Good seeing you too. I guess my invitation got lost in the mail." Baldur crossed his arms. "What are you doing here?" "To talk about the elephant in the room." Gabriel, without looking, seemed to sense that Ganesh was rising indignantly to his feet, because he held up a hand and clarified in exasperation, "Not you." Ganesh returned to his seat and Gabriel went on. "The Apocalypse. We can't stop it, gang." He paused, then held up one finger. "But first things first." Pivoting, he faced the boys once more. "The adults need to have a little conversation. Check you later."

A single snap of the fingers later and the brothers found themselves back in their room, Dean once again able to speak and the first words out of his mouth were, "holy crap." His heart was still pounding rather erratically and he tried breathing deeply a few times to slow it down. "Yeah, tell me about it." Sam raked back his floppy hair with one hand, looking just as unsettled as Dean felt. He held up one finger after the raking was complete, adding a point of his own. "By the way, next time I say let's keep driving...uh, let's keep driving." "Ok, yeah, next time" Dean agreed, heavy on the sarcasm, as it appeared rather iffy they would ever have a "next time" after the little conundrum they'd wandered into.

Sam, who'd been pacing back and forth the length of the room a few times turned to face his brother, exhaling deeply in a calm, focusing manner. "Alright, so what's our next move?" "I-I... I don't know." Dean shook his head, trying to clear it of everything else and figure out the best course of action that would save not only themselves but the other innocent people stuck here because of them. "Grab those poor saps outta the freezer, I guess" he suggested finally, brow furrowed in thought. "Bust 'em out somehow. Gank a few freaks along the way if we're lucky?" "And when are you ever lucky?"

Gabriel's lazy drawl danced its way across the room. The archangel was seated comfortably in an armchair across the room, which had been empty until a second prior, with his feet kicked up on the plush footstool. Dean scowled. "You know what? Bite me, Gabriel." "Maybe later big boy." Gabriel winked, then kicked the footstool to one side and stood. "I should've known" Dean continued, shaking his head as he started to put the puzzle pieces together. "I mean this had your stink all over it from the jump." Gabriel sauntered closer, raising an eyebrow. "You think I'm behind this? Please." He snorted and waved this idea off with one hand dismissively. "I'm the Costner to your Houston" he explained, finally coming to stand between the brothers, looking from one to the other. "I'm here to save your ass." "Wait." Something about this did not sound right to Dean. He pointed at Gabriel then gestured between his brother and himself incredulously. "YOU want to pull US out of the fire?"

Gabriel tapped his nose and then pointed in return to Dean. "Bingo!" He lowered his finger. "Those guys are either gonna dust you, or use you as bait. Either way, you're uber boned." "Wow." Dean shook his head in annoyed disbelief. "'cause a couple of months ago you were telling us that we need to “play our roles”. You were uber boning us!" Gabriel shook his head with a chuckle. "Ohh... The end is still nigh. Michael and Lucifer are gonna dance the lambada, but not tonight. Not here." Something still seemed off here. Dean tilted his head to one side. "And why do you care?" "I...don't care." Gabriel suddenly got all fidgety, looking at the ground rather than Dean's face. "But, me and Kali we, uh, had a thing a few years back." Dean continued staring. Gabriel looked back up with a defensive shrug. "What can I say? I'm sentimental." Dean opened his mouth to counter but before he could say anything Sam, who'd been silent for quite awhile, threw out something he'd obviously been thinking over. "Do they have a chance? Against Satan?" Dean turned to face him slowly, staring blankly. "Really Sam???"

"You have a better idea Dean" Sam challenged back, staring him down. "It's a BAD idea" Gabriel interrupted before Dean had a chance to think it over. "Lucifer's gonna turn them into finger paint." Sam's shoulders slumped in defeat, leaving the idea where it was. Gabriel nodded curtly. "So let's get going while the going's good, hmm?" "Ok, great, why don't you just zap us outta here then." Dean gestured impatiently. "Would if I could but Kali's got you by the short and curlies" Gabriel explained, making a face. "It's a blood spell. You boys are on a leash." Dean and Sam swapped a look before Dean returned his focus to Gabriel. "Meaning??" "It means it's time for a little bit of the old black magic." Gabriel spritzed some breath spray into his mouth and raised an eyebrow suggestively. Dean took that to mean he was going to try and seduce Kali into releasing them but he didn't really care what it entailed as long as they could vamoose. "Okay, yeah. Whatever. Well, we're gonna take the hors d'oeuvres in the freezer with us" he added decisively. "Forget it." Gabriel shook his head, pulling another face. "It's gonna be hard enough sneaking you mooks outta here." The boys swapped a look. Dean crossed his arms. "They called you Loki, right? Which means they don't really know who you are?" "Told you." Gabriel shrugged and smiled proudly. "Witness protection." Dean took a step closer to Gabriel, raising an eyebrow challengingly. "Ok, well then how about you do what we say, or we tell the, uh, legion of doom about your secret identity. They don't seem like a real pro-angel kinda crowd." Gabriel's smile faded. "I'll take your voices away." "We'll write it down" Dean countered instantly. "I'll cut off your hands" Gabriel threatened, starting to look angry. And still Dean didn't back down, a counter-argument at the ready once more. "Well then, people are gonna be asking, "Why are you guys running around with no hands"?" His already elevated eyebrow went a little higher triumphantly as he could see the defeat closing in on Gabriel's expression. "Fine" the angel huffed at last before vanishing. Dean let out a breath and lowered his eyebrow, looking somewhat impressed with himself. He glanced over at Sam with a smile that was part amused and part relieved.

"I can't believe that worked."

Sam chuckled, clapped Dean on the shoulder and then gestured for the door, implying they should get moving on the freeing the hostages part of the plan while Gabriel worked on the breaking the blood spell part of the plan. So the two of them crept out of their room, down the hallway, down the stairs and back into the kitchen. Sam was ready ahead of time this time, already having the lock pick set out by the time they reached the freezer. And still, he'd only just barely gotten one of the tools into the lock when he felt two strong hands lifting him by the shoulders, spinning him around, where he became face to face with Zao Shen who pinned him to the wall by the throat. Sam kicked out, thrashing, gasping for air.

Across the room, he could hear the sounds of Dean having his own mini-battle with another god. There was a hard thud and then, just as Sam's vision was beginning to go foggy from lack of oxygen, Zao Shen released him and crumpled to the ground, a wooden stake sticking out of his back. Sam dropped to his knees, breathing deeply for a few seconds before accepting Dean's outstretched hand to help himself up. "Where the hell is Gabriel" Dean wanted to know. However, before Sam could reply in any way, shape or form, two more gods were appearing in the doorway. Sam sighed heavily.

"Let me get back to you on that."

The second struggle was shorter than the first. Dean and Sam were both too exhausted from their little pre-struggle struggle to do much of anything other than throw a few half-hearted punches and ducks before being wrangled and dragged unceremoniously back to the dining room, thrown roughly into their chairs. After catching his breath with a wince and looking around, Dean noticed Gabriel sitting stiffly in a chair at the head of the table with Kali standing over him, looking pissed. "How long have you known" Gabriel was asking, looking pained. "Long enough" was Kali's quiet answer. "How's the rescue going" Dean called down to him sarcastically, wiping blood from his split lip with the back of one hand. Gabriel speared him with a "not in the mood" look.

"Well, surprise, surprise." Kali interrupted their little exchange, addressing the room at large. "The Trickster has tricked us." "Kali." Gabriel shook his head in a quiet plea. "Don't." "You're mine now" Kali reminded him, holding up two fingers to reveal the traces of Gabriel's blood still smeared there. "And you have something I want." Moving slowly, Kali leaned over Gabriel, sliding one hand up his chest and then quickly plunging it into his jacket, surfacing with Gabriel's angel blade. "An Archangel's blade" she announced, gaining the full attention of everyone else in the room. "From the Archangel, Gabriel." The other gods starting stirring and whispering, casting long glances in Gabriel's way. Gabriel held up his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay! So I got wings. Like Kotex." He smiled briefly before growing 100% serious again. "But that doesn't make me any less right about Lucifer." "He's lying" Kali informed the rest immediately. "He's a spy." "I'm not a spy" Gabriel insisted with a fiery passion. "I'm a runaway. I'm trying to save you." His eyes locked with Kali's. "I know my brother, Kali. He should scare the living crap out of you. You can't beat him." He let out a deep breath, then peeled his eyes away from Kali's and spoke this next bit to everyone. "I've skipped ahead, seen how this story ends--" "Your story." Kali gripped his chin and pulled his focus back to her. "Not ours." She released his chin with a slight shove, looking royally pissed off. "Westerners, I swear. The sheer arrogance. You think you're the only ones on earth? You pillage and you butcher in your God's name. But you're not the only religion, and he's not the only God." She shook her head furiously. "And now you think you can just rip the planet apart? You're wrong." Her voice lowered dangerously. "There are BILLIONS of us. And we were here first." She placed one hand on the arm of Gabriel's chair, getting right down in his face, practically whispering by this point, though Dean could still make out the words. "If anyone gets to end this world, it's me." She lifted the blade. "I'm sorry."

Dean was on his feet, the warning on his lips, but the blade flashed and plunged and he was yanked down roughly just as a pure white light exploded from Gabriel's body. Everyone in the room stared. "This is crazy" Mercury mumbled, actually looking frightened and alarmed. "They CAN die" Kali pointed out, not taking her saddened gaze from Gabriel's lifeless form. "We can kill Lucifer."

More silence. Dean exhaled sharply and threw caution to the wind, rising to his feet again. "All right you primitive screwheads, listen up" he declared loudly. "Are you out of your mind" Sam hissed in alarmed panic from the next seat over. "I'm out of options" Dean whispered back with a strained smile before raising his voice again to address the stunned into silence gods. "Now on any other given day, I'd be doing my damndest to, uh, kill you. You filthy murdering chimps." His heart was going a million miles a minute. "But, uh, hey, desperate times." He swallowed hard. "So even though I'd love nothing better than to slit your throats, you dicks, I'm gonna help you." He straightened up, letting his gaze roam across each of the spectating gods. "I'm going to help you ice the devil. And then we can all get back to ganking each other, like normal." He took a few steps away from the table, his heart beating like a bass drum in his chest but managing to keep a collected outer appearance. "You want Lucifer, well, dude's not in the Yellow Pages. But me and Sam..." He gestured between himself and his brother, who hesitantly stood as well. "We can get him here."

Kali eyed him suspiciously, still holding Gabriel's blade. "How?" "First you let those main courses go" Dean instructed, reaching out to pick up a half-full shot of whiskey on the table to quell his slightly trembling hands. He'd never so brazenly ordered gods around without being slammed into something or having something broken. "Then we talk. We can either take on the devil together, or you lame-ass bitches can eat me." He took a swig of the alcohol, then placed the glass down again with a wry smile.

"Literally."

Sam wasn't entirely sure where Dean was going with all this but he'd long ago learned to trust his brother implicitly when it came to things like this so he simply kept his mouth shut and nodded along, waiting to see what the deal was. And by the time Dean had finished rambling, it seemed as though maybe Dean was reconsidering how ridiculous he'd thought Sam's earlier notion of the gods taking on Lucifer was.

Either that or he no longer cared how ridiculous it was.

For a long minute, Kali simply stared at Dean impassively and Dean stared back, managing to keep his outwardly tough exterior in place pretty well for someone whose insides were shaking like they'd just been caught in a tornado. Finally, Kali inclined her head at the two gods closest to the door. "Let them out" she instructed simply. Sam stayed behind to get the ball rolling by explaining to Kali and Baldur how he and Dean could get Satan there while Dean followed the two gods to the freezer to help herd the hostages to safety. "Ok, everyone out of here, let's move, now" he instructed, holding open the hotel's front door, ushering them through it. The final guest had just made a break for it and Dean was about ready to duck back inside when he heard his name being whispered frantically. "Psst...Dean." Glancing around curiously, Dean finally located the source of the whisper and did a double take. Gabriel was sitting in the Impala's back seat, its window rolled down, beckoning for Dean to come closer. "Don't look at me" he hissed when Dean's staring continued to last for a bit. "Just get in. Act natural." "Man, there is nothing natural about this at all" Dean informed the archangel, sliding into the driver's seat and turning to face him, totally perplexed. "I thought you were dead!"

"You think I'd give Kali my real sword" Gabriel asked, looking shocked by this notion. "That thing can kill me!" Dean hooked his thumb at the hotel behind him. "So what do they have in there?" "A fake. Made it out of a can of diet orange Slice." Gabriel beamed. "So, uh, go snag our blood, would ya?" "What??" "I heard you in there." Gabriel inclined his head at Dean, looking impressed. "Kali likes you. You can get close. Lift the plasma, then we vamoose." He waggled his eyebrows. "No." Dean held out one hand, beckoning sharply with two fingers. "Hand over the real blade. Better yet, why don't you sack up and help us take down Lucifer." A bunch of gods and two humans against the devil may be suicidal, but throw an archangel in the mix and they maybe had a shot. Gabriel's eyebrows descended in a heartbeat. "You can't be serious." Dean's intense expression did not waver. "Deadly."

"Since when are you butt buddies with a bunch of monsters" Gabriel demanded sourly. "That's all they are to you, aren't they?" "Alright, you know what, Sam was right" Dean admitted. "It's nuts but it's the best idea I've heard, so unless you have a better one?" He tilted his head, waiting with a pointed look that quite plainly read he knew Gabriel wouldn't have one. Gabriel shrugged dismissively. "Well, good luck with that. Me? I'm blowing Jonestown." He inclined his head at the hotel. "Those lemmings wanna run off a cliff, that's their business." Gabriel's tone was flippant but there was something like grief hiding in his eyes. "I see right through you, you know that" Dean informed him after a beat. "The smart-ass shell, the whole “I could give a crap” thing? Believe me, it takes one to know one." "That so" Gabriel challenged but Dean could see the bravado fading fast. "Yes." Dean wasn't one to mince words or draw things out if he could get straight to the point. Which he did. "And maybe those freaks in there aren't your blood but they are your family." "They just stabbed me in the friggen heart" Gabriel exclaimed, looking outraged. "Maybe so" Dean agreed, locking eyes with the archangel. "But you still give a crap about 'em, don't you?" Gabriel's shoulders sagged. His seemingly perpetual sarcastic tone and smile both gone. "Dean." He actually sounded truly pained. "They're going to die in there without you" Dean pressed gently, trying to get to the heart that he knew had to be buried somewhere in that angelic chest. Gabriel gave his head a solemn, be-grieved shake, whispering "I can't kill my brother." "Can't...or won't" Dean threw back heatedly, giving up and reaching for the door handle. Gabriel looked down. Dean wrenched open the door and stepped outside, looking disappointed.

"That's what I thought."

"So you're going to summon Lucifer" Kali inquired as she and Baldur stood in front of Sam in the dining room, most of the other gods having dispersed for the moment anyway, only a handful remaining. "Sort of" Sam explained, not having needed an explanation of his own from Dean as to how they were going to get Lucifer there when Dean had been rambling about it earlier. Lucifer wanted Sam big time. The second the enochian warding symbols were cleared from his ribs, they wouldn't have the problem of needing to find Lucifer. He would find them. "I just need you to squeegee some stuff from my ribs and he'll come running."

Kali and Baldur exchanged a look, moving forward. "Breaking them would be easier" Kali suggested simply, as though discussing the weather. Sam took a step backwards, smiling uncomfortably. "Uh, no...that's ok." Kali lifted one hand, whether to erase or break the symbols, it was uncertain. Fortunately, the door opened just then to reveal Dean, putting a hold on that decision for now.

The words out of Dean's mouth were not so fortunate however.

"Checking in." Lucifer rang the bell cheerfully as Mercury turned around to face him, losing some of the color in his face. Which was a little surprising in Lucifer's opinion seeing as how it had been him to reach out and call him there to begin with. "L-lucifer" Mercury stammered, trying to smile. "Thanks for coming." "You did right calling me" Lucifer praised, trailing one finger along the edge of the front desk, collecting dirt and then lifting that finger back up to eye level, rubbing it against another finger idly to let the clear it of grime. "It's just...the way the talk is heading in there, it's... it's insane" Mercury prattled on. "I t-thought maybe you'd like to be...prepared." Lucifer was almost insulted that he would need to prepare for a fight with a bunch of pathetic pagan gods. It wasn't really worth his time and the only reason he was here to begin with was because of the tidbit Mercury had dropped about Sam Winchester also being present.

"You know, I never understood you pagans" he drawled lazily, the smile on Mercury's face slipping a bit. "Always fighting, always happy to sell out your own kind. No wonder you forfeited this planet to us." He chuckled, then grew deadly serious, pointing in accusation. "You are worse than humans. You're worse than demons. And yet you claim to be Gods." Mercury, no longer looking frightened, opened his mouth furiously and took a step towards Lucifer, who simply yawned and twisted his hand around slightly as though screwing in a lightbulb. Mercury dropped to the ground, neck twisted completely around, blood trickling from his nose, stone cold dead. Lucifer eyed his corpse with no interest.

"And they call ME prideful."

The word 'again' had barely faded from Dean's lips when the lights began to shake and flicker overhead. "What's happening" Baldur demanded and the remaining three gods, aside from Baldur and Kali, immediately headed out into the hallway to investigate. No sooner had they done so then there were multiple crashes, thuds and screams issuing from behind the closed doors. Sam would have known anyway, but the chills up and down his spine helped to confirm it. He turned to face the others in alarm.

"It's him."

Kali glanced around in confused concern. "How??" "Does it matter" was Dean's highly rhetorical question, gesturing with impatience. "Shazzam us outta here, would ya??" "We can't" Baldur informed him grimly. There was no time to ask what that meant before a familiar voice was drawling from the now open doorway, "Of course you can't. You didn't say "mother, may I"?" Lucifer grinned broadly, pushing off the doorframe and sauntering closer. "Sam, Dean, good to see you again." Dean felt his shoulders stiffen and his heart rate start to slowly elevate. Beside him he could feel more than see that Sam was clenching his fists. Before either of them could do or say anything however, Baldur was storming forward, ignoring Kali's warning of "Baldur, don't." "You think you own the planet" Baldur snarled, enraged. "What gives you the right??" Lucifer, looking bored, thrust one hand directly through Baldur's chest, killing him instantly. "No one gives us the right" he informed Baldur's corpse, dropping it to the ground effortlessly and kicking it aside. "We take it."

Upon seeing what Lucifer had done, Kali, apparently forgetting her own warning, engulfed both her arms in blazing fire which she then flung in Lucifer's direction, attempting to incinerate him. Sam and Dean dove behind an overturned table for cover. But when the blast died down, Lucifer was merely standing in the same spot he had been, not a singe on him. He studied Kali for a split second before jerking his head upwards as though trying to get rid of an annoying mosquito, and sent her flying through the air, hitting the fall wall and landing hard on her back, winded. "You ok" Sam whispered. Dean opened his mouth but it wasn't his voice that answered. "Not really." Dean's head whipped around to discover Gabriel had suddenly appeared on his other side. Gabriel gave a rueful shrug. "Better late than never, huh?" Pulling a dvd case from his jacket pocket, he slapped it against Dean's chest, waiting until Dean had reached out one hand to take it. "Guard that with your life" he instructed firmly before rising to his feet and stepping out around the table. Lucifer had just been about to stamp one foot down on Kali's face but Gabriel without moving a muscle, flung him backwards through the door into the hallway. "Oh Lucy, I'm home" he sing-songed as Lucifer pushed himself back to his feet with narrowed eyes. He took a step back in Kali's direction threateningly but Gabriel stepped to the left, placing himself and his newly acquired real angel blade, glinting in the light, between Kali and Lucifer. "Uh uh. Not this time." He held out the blade at arm's length, keeping Lucifer at bay and calling to the brothers over one shoulder. "Guys, get her out of here." Sam and Dean hurried to Kali's side without needing to be asked twice, each taking one of her arms to help her up and get the hell out of that room.

Kali was still a little woozy but she managed to walk on her own once they were free and clear of Lucifer. She took one look at the Impala however and stopped walking, wrinkling her nose. "I'm not getting in that thing." "Just get in the car princess" Dean ordered, not in the mood for stalling. They weren't out of the woods just yet. "How do you think it's going in there" Sam wanted to know as the three of them climbed into the car, Dean preparing to rev the engine and peel out of that parking lot like they were on fire. "I don't know" he admitted uncertainly. "I mean, the gods already gave it their best shot." And look how that turned out. "Now, it's up to Gabriel."

Which was a sentence he never thought he would say.
