Her heart was beating a thousand miles a minute it felt like it was going to come out of her chest at any moment. Sam had burst in behind her a moment or two later. A civilian was staring at the gun she had in her hand with wide eyes. She wanted to scream at her to get the fuck out. Her lungs hurt, her body hurt. She just found herself darting out the door quicker than she ever thought she could run. Without even thinking about Sam she jumped into his crappy car's passenger seat with the gun still held firmly in her hand. Ready for another attack, ready to be chased by Dean. Ready for anything. A hunter wasn't suppose to panick, but this was Dean, and this was Crowley, that is a whole different ball game.

As Sam burst out of the cafeteria like a house on fire with Ruby's knife still raised in one hand, the civilian that had given Jane a wide-eyed stare bestowed the same expression on Sam, clearly wondering what was going on in that cafeteria. Expecting Dean to just materialize any second, Sam didn't have much time for explanations, but he took three seconds to say breathlessly, "whatever you do, do not go in there. Get out of this museum. Go. Now." And then he took off in the same direction Jane had sprint in.

He found her in the car, her breathing shallow and panicked. Sam's own breathing was pretty rapid. He tucked Ruby's knife into his belt, slid into the passenger seat, slammed the door, started the engine and peeled out of that parking lot pronto. "Are you ok" he asked once they were about four blocks away from the museum. He was still tense. Still waiting for Dean to make an appearance. After all, as a demon, he didn't need to tail them in the Impala. He could simply appear out of thin air.

But the further they drove, the more space they put between themselves and the museum, the more Sam began to wonder if Dean was even planning on following them this time. It all depended on which Dean was actually pulling the strings in that head.

And, try as he might to figure it out, Sam wasn't honestly sure what the answer to that was.

"Are you okay?"

She didn't even realize they had been driving. Jane's gaze moved over to Sam who was at the wheel. It almost felt like there was something wrong with her. Her gun was still in her hands. She had shot Crowley as well as two other demons in the moment of adrenaline she had felt. It felt like a blur. It felt like it hadn't actually happened. It felt like it had been a dream. "You're asking me?" her tone had almost been angry as she asked this. "I should be asking you the same question. I'm fine. Just a little jarred. Are you okay?" She asked still feeling strange. Still feeling as if this hadn't really happened. They would get Dean back, but that would take time.

Jane could help; somehow. She was good at what she did. She wasn't a hunter as long as the Winchester's, but she was still useful. Right?

Sam allowed half a smile at Jane's turn around of the question. "I'm ok" he promised, despite the fact that it was mostly a lie. Sure, he was banged up. Sure, his broken arm was throbbing painfully from where he'd landed on it, aggravating the break, and his throat was sore from where Dean had choked him, but physical beatings were nothing really compared to the turmoil he was mentally facing. Still, it wasn't like confessing any of this to Jane was going to magically make it better. No, what was going to make it better was dropping Jane off at a safely warded location, turning around, locating his brother again, and this time, not leaving the premises without him.

The bunker, their chosen destination, was a state away, which meant a couple hours at the very minimum. "You should get some rest" Sam advised, looking sideways at her injured face with concern. One of her eyes was completely swollen shut, the other bruised, and a gash on her cheek was scabbing over, but still had quite a bit of blood concealing around it.

He hoped he didn't look that bad.

"I'm okay." That made Jane angry. She almost wanted to hit him. She touched her own face, feeling the somewhat left of the wet blood that lay on it. He wasn't okay. She was more okay then he was. It made her angry how the Winchester's always acted like they were okay, when they weren't. They were taught stupidly, by whomever taught them. She imagined them having a rest of their family, but couldn't.

It bothered her a lot. "You should get some rest." He told her. She wondered if her own rage showed on her face. She didn't exactly let herself respond to him. He did look worse then her. Even without her saying so. But before she knew it, she had passed out.

Sam glanced sideways at Jane when she didn't say anything. Not that she really needed to, as nothing he'd said had been a question. But still, he'd been maybe expecting either some resistance to the idea of getting rest or agreement. Not nothing. He was surprised by the look of anger spreading across her face. Clearly whatever he'd said had not sat well with her. He tried to think of something to say to ease the tension but the next time he glanced her way, she was out cold, and a somewhat peaceful expression had taken over the hostile one. Sam returned his focus to the road, staring straight ahead in determination.

Two and a half hours later, Sam pulled the car up to a halt in front of the bunker and cut the engine. "Hey." He nudged Jane's shoulder with the hand from his good arm before opening his door and stepping out, stretching his long legs. He took the bunker's key from his pocket, feeling fortunate that Dean had at least left him that when he'd fled, otherwise Sam would have been screwed.

Jane was dreaming about the case she had been working when she saw Dean at the bar. But instead of ghosts, it was demons that plagued the home. The kind of demons that are just smoke, if there was even such a kind. A ghost demon. It scared her. It looked like smoke with red eyes. Salt, iron, nothing was working. It was coming for her. "Hey." She awoke with a start and looked around. She was back in the car with Sam who was now getting it out. She touched her face, it was less swollen now. She slid out of the car and followed Sam, feeling dizzy from just being woken up. They were at the bunker, she had seen it last when they were on a hunt. She slid her gun back into her pants. She was watching Sam closely. He probably felt defeated. She did. They would figure out something.

Sam felt Jane's eyes on him as he slid the key into the lock and turned it, admitting them into the depths of the bunker. As he slowly walked down the spiral metal staircase with Jane following, he spoke without looking at her. "Really Jane, I'm fine. I know you don't believe me, but I am." He pocketed the key, reaching the bottom of the stairs and looking around, trying to figure out what to do next. It really wouldn't be polite to just dump Jane and run, especially in her state. Besides, he was exhausted. Taking on Dean again right now, if he could even manage to find him, would not be the smartest move in the world.

"Are you hungry" he asked after a few minutes of awkward silence. The bunker's kitchen was pretty well stocked. He wasn't the world's greatest chef but he could definitely throw together something for them to eat.

If he could focus long enough.

Jane watched as he slid the lock into the key. She followed him down the staircase, feeling the tenseness between them. She was probably being stupid for being angry at him. It was better to feel what was going on then to repress it. Not that she took her own advice in thinking that ever. "Really Jane, I'm fine. I know you don't believe me, but I am." She folded her arms as they reached the bottom of the stairs. "You're right. I don't believe you. Because I don't see how you can be fine." Jane huffed out a sigh. She just hated that she hadn't been able help her friend.

"Are you hungry?" She could see how tired he was. She could see the kitchen from where they were standing. "Dude, you're exhausted. I can make something for us if you wanna eat. I don't mind. That was a long drive."

Sam opened his mouth to claim he wasn't tired but figured that might be pushing the amount of lies he'd been piling upon her and closed his mouth again. "Alright" he finally allowed, suppressing a yawn. "If you don't mind. The kitchen's right there down those stairs." He gestured, sure she'd seen it on her own. "I'll just be...over here." He gestured again in the other direction, towards the library. He watched Jane's retreating form until he could no longer see it and then began pacing. He really didn't want to have to do this, seeing as how their latest meet-up hadn't worked wonders for either of them, but after what had just happened, he didn't think there was really another choice.

"Cas...it's Sam." He tipped his head back, speaking to the bunker's ceiling. "I, uh...I found him. But it..." He raked a hand through his shaggy hair, taking in an unsteady breath. "It didn't go well."

Understatement.
