"Get them upstairs. The attic!" Dean flicked the lighter a final time, catching a stream of bug spray and creating a makeshift flame blower that he aimed at the incoming bugs. He waited until Sam and the Pikes were already hustling up the stairs to follow them, walking backwards and continuing to blow a firy inferno of bug spray at the attacking insects, using himself and the spray as a shield for Sam and the Pikes. "Dean hurry up!" He could hear Sam calling from the attic, so he sprayed the cluster of bugs one last time, then turned and sprinted.
The attic door slammed closed behind Dean, and it was a half a second before all the bugs that had been chasing them slammed into the now closed attic door. Breathing heavily, Dean turned to face the others. "We just have to hold them off for another hour or so." Sam nodded, herding the Pikes into the far corner of the attic and telling them to sit tight and not move. He then returned to Dean with a worried expression. "Do you think we'll really be able to hold the bugs off for an hour?"
Dean looked down at the can of bug spray and his lighter. "Ask me that in another hour."

--- 45 Minutes Later ---
So far they had managed to stay holed up in the attic without any interference, but the buzzing and other loud noises from outside were getting louder. The roof was seeming to shake with the force of thousands of insects slamming into it, almost as if they were trying to just tip the whole house over. For the most part, the attic had been deadly silent. There had been one or two occassions where Sam and Dean had said something to each other in low tones about the prognosis of their situation. And there had been one very brief occasion when Larry had tried to speak to his son, though that awkward conversation fizzled out after only two or three exchanges.
Dean was pacing from one end of the attic to the other. Sam caught up to him, keeping his voice low. "I can't believe we've kept the bugs at bay for this long. It's almost too easy." As soon as he said it, he wished he could take it back. The very next second a large chunk of the roof fell in.

For the second time that evening, Dean raised an eyebrow wryly and commented with, "you were saying?" Sam gave a sheepish shrug and then at lightening speed, the brothers worked together to heave the fallen chunk of roof up off the ground. While Sam, the taller of the two, held the roof chunk above his head, Dean hoisted up a heavy wooden beam and shoved it in place, pinning the missing part of the roof back in place. "That's not going to hold for very long" Dean pointed out, breathing heavily as he sprayed the handful of bees and flies that had flown in before the roof was patched, with the last of his makeshift bug spray flame blower.
Again, almost as soon as the words exited his mouth, another piece of the roof, larger than the first, came crashing down and even more bugs swarmed in. Dean tossed the empty bug spray can over one shoulder, pocketed the lighter, and ran to stand between the angry insects and the Pikes, with Sam at his side. They spread out their arms and did their best to take most of the stings and bites.
And then suddenly, just when it seemed the bugs were going to win, they vanished.
The sun had come up.

An hour later found Sam, Dean, Jonie and Larry standing on the front lawn, waiting for the moving van and shaking hands. "You saved my family" Larry was saying, gripping Dean's hand tightly and then Sam's. "But more importantly..." He glanced over one shoulder at the front door of the house, through which Matt was walking with an armful of boxes. "...you saved my relationship with my son. And I can't thank you enough for that.""Well-" Dean began, but Sam didn't stick around to hear what he was going to say. He wandered over to where Matt was throwing things into the large dumpster parked in the driveway.
Sam noticed that everything he was throwing away had something to do with bugs. He had really had quite an extensive collection of books, pictures, and the actual insects themselves. "What, not so interested in bugs anymore" Sam asked with a laugh. Matt made a face. "You know, they just sort of lost their appeal to me.""Understandable." Sam held out one hand to shake Matt's. "It was nice meeting you Matt.""Yeah. Same here." Matt ignored the hand and pulled Sam into a hug instead. When they parted, Sam started to head back to where Dean and the older Pikes were standing, but Matt called him back. "Hey Sam?""Yeah?""I hope you and your Dad solve your problems. I really do."
Sam was caught off-guard by the open sincerity and also by how much he agreed with what was being said. He hadn't realized it until lately, what with Dean pointing out that John had actually been proud of him, but he really missed his father. He smiled sadly.

As Sam wandered away, Dean finished his sentence. "Well, how about you just make sure this plot of land stays vacant, and we'll call it square." Larry nodded confidently. "Oh don't worry. I will make 100% sure that no one ever lives here again, you have my word." Dean nodded and shook Larry's hand again. "Good." Sam was on his way back over. "You ready to roll, Sammy?" He pulled the keys from his pocket and double clicked the unlock icon. The boys got into the waiting Impala, waved a final time to the Pikes and Dean hit the gas.
It only took a few minutes of silent driving before Sam broached the subject of their father. "Hey Dean?" Dean slid his gaze sideways and then back to the road. "What?""I really want to find Dad." Dean nodded. "I know you do Sam. I do too. We'll find him, don't worry." Sam kept his eyes forward. "I want to apologize." Dean was momentarily stunned into silence. The amount of times Sam as an adult had apologized to their father could be counted on a the fingers of a guy with no hands. Dean took one hand off the wheel and clapped Sam on the shoulder.
"We'll find him."
[THE END.]
