ooc; SEASON SIX. EPISODE EIGHT.

Sam sat at an outdoor picnic table at a rib joint in Saint Louis, picking at his plate of ribs. Without a soul, food held no appeal to him and when he'd been trying to convince Dean he was still normal, he'd eat occasionally but now that they both knew exactly what his problem was, he saw no reason to keep faking it. Any food, no matter what it was, just sort of tasted like rubber. Sam glanced off to the side where his brother was standing a few feet away on the phone with Bobby. Sam didn't have to be close enough to hear to know they were mulling over this latest Crowley conundrum. It's all Dean had been focusing on for the week they'd known about it. That and, of course, Sam's soullessness issue. That was still high up there. It probably should have been for Sam too. But it wasn't.

And therein lay the problem.

"I know, Bobby, but there's got to be another way" Dean insisted heatedly after the older hunter hadn't been able to come up with any alternative suggestions as to how to get out of this mess. "I don't know. Keep digging. I mean, if Crowley thinks we're just gonna"- "Crowley thinks you're just gonna what, Dean" the familiar british accent drawled lazily from behind him where Crowley had just materialized at Dean's elbow. Dean's spine stiffened. "Is that Bobby Singer" the demon went on, inclining his head at the phone with a smirk. "Give him a kiss for me." "I'll call you back" Dean muttered, hanging up and turning to face Crowley head on, scowling. "What do you want??"

"Good news boys." Crowley sauntered over to the table where Sam was sitting, pulling out a chair and straddling it backwards. Dean remained standing, arms crossed. "I've got a job for you." "I'm gonna say this exactly once." Dean set his jaw, his expression wooden. "You can take your job and shove it up your ass." Crowley cocked an eyebrow. "Is that anyway to talk to you boss?" "You're not my boss dickbag" Dean countered flatly, to which Crowley simply chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Dean, Dean, Dean. Been through this. Quit clutching your pearls. You've been working for me for some time now." He inclined his head at the younger Winchester. "Sam here, longer." "We didn't know" Sam came back with instantly, looking annoyed. Crowley made a face. "Like that makes a difference to you. You'd sell your brother for a dollar right now if you really needed a soda." Sam actually appeared to be considering that. Dean's expression pinched up in an attempt not to let Crowley know how much that little dig had pained him.

Crowley reached into an inner jacket pocket and pulled out a folded newspaper. "So I'm sending you"- "No." Crowley looked surprised at Dean's fierce interruption. "Beg pardon?" "I've done some shady stuff in my time, but I am not doing this" Dean refused stubbornly.

"No."

"Ten quid says you will." Crowley, sick of this little staring match, vanished from his chair, reappearing on the other side of Sam and touching him on the back of one hand. The younger Winchester let out a surprised gasp of pain, a large burn beginning to spread across his skin. "You like pain, Sam" he taunted. "You like Hell?" Sam's face was screwed up in pain, the burn blistering his skin. Crowley turned to face Dean who was on his feet aggressively. "You need to stop thinking of this as some kind of deal or negotiation" Crowley insisted, crossing his arms. "This is a hostage situation, you arrogant little thug. I own your brother! Do you understand me?"

There was a heatedly tense pause, Crowley staring down Dean until he held up both hands implying surrender, though the muscle in his jaw was ticking pretty fast. Crowley nodded smugly and snapped. The burn vanished from Sam's hand. "Come on, Dean, smile. It's not that bad. Here's incentive – you bag me a live alpha, and I'll give you little Sammy's soul back, with a cherry on top." "What, alpha vamp not good enough" Sam challenged sourly, flexing and massaging his hand to remove the lingering sting. Crowley narrowed his eyes. "Best mind where you poke your nose, if you want to keep it."

Returning to the newspaper he'd left on the table, he shoved it towards the brothers. "Your merry little hike up the food chain starts here. Businessman found dead in his car – chest ripped open...heart missing. Any guesses?" It was a mostly rhetorical question as any hunter worth their salt knew the signs of most creatures, even obscure ones, and you couldn't get more basic than, "werewolf" as Sam declared, pushing the newspaper back, still looking disgruntled about that whole burn business Crowley supposed. "It's not a full moon" Dean pointed out and Crowley waved this aside dismissively. "Werewolves turning on the full moon...so '09." "He's right." Sam nodded reluctantly. "Samuel and I ganked one about six months back on the half-moon. Things have been out of whack for a while now, I guess." "So, it's settled then." Crowley beamed. "You bag the howler, bring it home to papa. See you soon, boys."

And he was gone.

"So, the vic's a real class act." Sam flipped through the file they'd put together on him while Dean drove. "Owned a bunch of slum-grade apartments. Couple houses, too." "So this is it? This is – this is what you're gonna do" Dean wanted to know, causing Sam to look up from his research. "What am I doing?" "Crowley" Dean snapped without missing a beat. "He's so far up our asses we're – we're – we're coughing sulfur, but you – you're just gonna work the case?" "Well, he's got us by the short and curlies" Sam reminded him, not needing a reminder himself of the sharp burst of pain that had radiated throughout his whole body. He didn't feel anything without a soul and it had still hurt. That was some powerful pain. "What else are we supposed to do?"

"It's just – you know, man, I... I'm working for a demon now. I don't even know who you are" Dean listed off, scrunching up his expression in exhaustion. "I just... I just need a second to adjust." "Look... this is a crap situation" Sam acknowledged. "I get it. But, Dean, I am still me – same melon, same memories. I-I still like the same music. I...I still like to read more than watch the movies, I..." He sighed heavily, trying a different tactic. "I know you don't trust me. And I can't take back what I did. But I'm going to prove it to you." He looked sideways, catching Dean doing the same at the same time and locked eyes with him intensely.

"I'm still your brother."

"How you doing? Agents Holt and Wilson."

After reaching town and doing a little sniffing into the businessman's death, the boys rented a motel room, intending to settle in for the night, maybe do a little research, but the instant they'd set up their homemade police scanner, it lit up, crackling with life, the dispatcher announcing they'd gotten another animal attack, chest ripped open like the last. So now they were at the morgue to check into the second victim as well, holding up their badges to a very confused detective. "What are the feds doing here" he wanted to know, zipping up the body bag before either brother could get a glimpse. "Oh, we're specialists" Sam informed him in a flat voice. "They call us in to answer the questions of mouth-breathing dick monkeys." Both the detective and Dean stared at Sam. Dean felt a small twist in his gut, missing his real brother, the soulful version of him, with everything he possessed.

"So, you gonna walk us through this" Sam pressed, unfazed by their stares. "Or what?" The detective studied Sam for another second and then nodded. "Dock worker. Guy on the morning shift found him – chest ripped wide open." "Same as the body in the car" Dean wanted to know, followed by Sam's inquiry of, "internal organs missing on both vics? Like their hearts?" "Uh... looks like it, yeah" the detective confirmed, puzzled. "How'd you know?" Dean opened his mouth to give a practiced fed sort of answer but Sam beat him to it, changing the subject abruptly. "So, this guy, he – he have any enemies?" "Yeah, plenty..." The detective looked still more baffled. "But, uh, I don't think it was a wolf or a cougar that had a beef with the guy. You do realize these were animal attacks right?" "An animal out here?" Dean gestured behind them to the open water easily viewable through the window.

"You think it came for the sailing?"

After gleaning as much information as they could from the detective, the boys returned to the motel room and Dean crashed, asleep before his head hit the pillow. Sam, no longer needing to pretend to sleep, worked by the moonlight at the kitchen table, going through everything they knew. Moonlight turned to sunlight as the first rays of the morning began to creep their way into the motel room. Sam continued working. He was spreading papers out on the table in concentration when Dean groaned and rolled over, rubbing his eyes. "You didn't sleep" he realized, noticing Sam's still made bed and then giving a nod of further realization. "Right...'Cause you don't... sleep." "Yeah" Sam confirmed, his eyes lingering on the name of a possible wolf suspect.

"Yeah" Dean repeated with a humorless smile. "That's not creepy at all." "Not like I can help it" Sam reminded him with a shrug. "So, you gonna just lay there staring at me...or you want to hear what I dug up?" Dean raised a sleepy hand and gestured, implying Sam could begin so the younger Winchester launched right in. "All right. So, we know that werewolves are basically id gone wild, right? I mean, whoever they hate, they kill when they wolf out. So, I've been playing connect the victims. And I think I found a common denominator." He gathered up the papers and slipped them into his briefcase before rising. "So come on. Get the lead out." He picked Dean's current fake fed badge from the table and tossed it with pretty good aim where it landed on the foot of Dean's bed.

Dean rubbed at his eyes, sitting up a little straighter on the bed. "Give me a second Robocop" he instructed, sounding a little grouchy, probably still not entirely awake. Sam counted to one in his head and then scooped up Dean's boots and tossed them as well, nearly hitting his brother in the head. Dean gave him a 'wtf' look. Sam shrugged innocently.

"I gave you a second."

Sam gave directions and Dean drove. The house they pulled up to was not in the greatest of conditions but it wasn't exactly falling apart either. Dean got out of the driver's side door, noticing as he did that Sam was checking the clip of his gun, then inserting the clip back in, checking the safety and slipping it into the waistband of his jeans, covered by his jacket in the small of his back. Dean locked the Impala and pocketed her keys, trying very hard to ignore the cold calculating look on Sam's face as they approached the door. The younger Winchester was clearly focused on getting that wolf no matter what it took.

Dean closed his eyes, counted to five, and then followed Sam up the front steps, reaching the top of them just as the door was opened to reveal a tired looking, thin, pale woman who held a young boy on one hip and looked between the brothers in confusion. "Can I help you?" The brothers held up their IDs in unison. "Is Cal Garrigan at home" Sam wanted to know briskly. "We've got a few questions we'd like to ask him." "Um, yeah, sure, come in." The woman gestured for them to follow her into a tiny, cramped kitchen where she put the little boy down and handed him a toy. "Honey, um, why don't you go play in your room for a little while, okay" she suggested. The boy hurried off down the hallway, passing a large German Shepard who was lying in the corner of the kitchen on a folded blanket, watching the scene before him with apparent interest. For a dog anyway.

"Um... can I get you guys anything" the woman asked politely, clearing a few extra toys from the table and gesturing for them to sit. "No thank you" Dean declined, equally as polite, taking one of the two seats. Sam remained standing. "So..." Dean forced his eyes away from Sam, focusing on the issue at hand. "Is Cal your boyfriend?" He hadn't seen a ring on her finger so he assumed they weren't married. "Yeah." She nodded, not looking altogether overjoyed by this fact. "For a few years now." "And where is he" Dean wanted to know next. "Um...sleeping I think" the woman faltered, glancing over one shoulder. "You mind telling him up and at 'em?" Dean smiled thinly. "He's got some guests." "Yeah, yeah, of course" she agreed, hurrying out of the room. Dean glanced at the German Shepard, something about it seeming a little strange to him, but before he could really give it much thought, the woman was returning with a very disheveled looking man in rumpled clothes, holding one hand to his head. Dean recognized the look of a simple hangover without much difficulty. The German Shepard growled. "Lucky, shh" Cal reprimanded, wincing at the loud noise. The dog growled again. "Cal, these are agents..." The woman hesitated, obviously forgetting their "names". So Dean helped her out. "Holt and Wilson." He inclined his head at Cal. "Morning... ish."

"What's going on?" Cal blinked into the kitchen lighting, looking between Sam and Dean with confusion. "Out late last night Cal?" It was phrased as a question but Dean didn't need the answer to know what it was. "Just, uh, you know, a couple beers with friends" Cal hedged, pouring himself a cup of coffee at the counter. "How many's a couple" Dean challenged, lifting one eyebrow. "I don't know. Three, four, tops" Cal promised, taking a long sip of the steaming hot beverage. Dean tried to think of the next angle he could use but Sam beat him there, speaking for the first time in awhile, with a flat, empathy-free tone. "If all you had was beer, then how come you're sweating vodka? And looks to me like you slept in those clothes. Am I right?" Cal blinked a couple of times, caught off guard by the directness of Sam's inquiry. "I don't know" he repeated. "I- I guess." "So what you're saying is, you got blind drunk, and you blacked out." This time it was Dean who delivered the blunt remark, though he was a little less frosty about it. "Something tells me this isn't the first time either." "So, Cal, truthfully, who knows what you've really been up to at night" Sam added with crossed arms. Cal looked between the brothers again, frowning. "What is all this about??" "We're investigating the death of Ronald Garrigan" Sam informed him without missing a beat and Cal looked even more confused. "My brother?? I...I thought that was some kind of animal attack?" He didn't sound overly broken up about it.

Sam seemed to pick up on that too, judging from his next question. "No love lost between the two of you, huh?" "Look, we had our differences, I guess." Cal shrugged indifferently. "I mean, I loved my brother, of course, but... Ron had a lot of problems. He was, uh, volatile." "Last time he was here you called the cops" Sam recapped without asking for any clarification on Cal's latest comment. Cal was starting to look annoyed. "Yeah, look, he came in here all messed up, and he was yelling. He HIT Mandy. So, yeah, I called the cops. But I don't see how that has to do with"- "Your landlord was found dead this week" Sam interrupted with narrowed eyed. "Were you aware of that?" "Saw it in the paper" Cal confirmed, looking more annoyed still. "Why?" "Well, you two were pretty far behind on your rent, right" Sam pointed out. "He had sent eviction papers?" "That-that was an animal attack" Mandy put in, one hand on Cal's arm protectively, though she didn't sound quite as convincing as maybe she would have liked. "Funny enough, yeah." Sam smiled humorlessly. "Both of 'em were."

"Yeah they were. So what in the hell do you think I had to do with 'em" Cal demanded aggressively. "Just following procedure" Dean insisted, rising to his feet, cutting the conversation off before Sam could take it any further. "Had to ask. You two have a good day." He inclined his head in farewell, propelling Sam along through the rotting front door and back down the steps. "So Cal's a prince" Sam muttered in disgust as the boys approached the parked Impala. "Yeah, doesn't even know where he was last night" Dean agreed, not exactly fond of the guy after just one meeting but certainly not sold quite yet that he was their guy. So when Sam's next question was, "so we bag him now?" Dean was ready with an easy answer. "No. We make sure." "Really?" Sam looked almost disappointed. Dean arched an eyebrow in disbelief. "Before we hand him over to a lifetime of demon rape? Yeah, really."

It seemed like a no-brainer to him.

With a heavy sigh, Sam reluctantly agreed to tail Cal that night, though it seemed much easier and simpler to grab the guy now rather than risk him transforming and hurting someone else. So for the rest of the day they trailed after Cal's beat up truck, keeping their distance so he wouldn't become suspicious. They followed him to one seedy joint after another, winding up at some fix-it garage on the other side of town. Cal disappeared inside and the boys waited across the street, the Impala idling beside the curb. After a few minutes, the light clicked on inside and the garage door rolled up, revealing that it had been decked out sort of like a bar with a juke box, and pool table. Then a few other cars pulled up and some of Cal's buddies got out, joining Cal by the refrigerator for some more beers. "Boy, Cal just doesn't know when to quit" Sam mused with a shake of the head. Which was fairly hypocritical if you gave it much thought, seeing as how the pair of them were regular heavy drinkers.

"Three scuzzy bars, one scuzzy strip club, a chili-dog joint, seven or eight nightcaps, and now... scotches in the library. I'm getting cirrhosis just watching this" Dean deadpanned dryly. "Other than that, we got squat." Sam was still determined to prove he was right about Cal being the wolf. He settled down for a long wait.

"Let's just see."

So the boys waited. And waited. And waited. Dean's eyelids were growing heavy with sleep but he managed to make it through the entire night without once closing them. And all that happened was that Cal and his buddies drank up a storm and one by one collapsed in alcoholic comas around the room, sleeping it off. And then the sun rose.

"Dude. Sun's up" Dean pointed out, elbowing his brother and gesturing to the strip of yellow making its way over the horizon in the distance. "And this guy's still on two legs." He noticed the slouched over position Cal had landed in, definitely not on either of his feet and made a face. "In theory. He ain't wolfing out" Dean concluded with a yawn. "Well not tonight anyway" Sam allowed reluctantly. Dean yawned again. "Let's head back to the motel. We can re-attack this in a couple hours." After he'd gotten some sleep.

"Dean." The older Winchester opened one eye and then the other groggily at the sound of his name being called. He rolled onto his back slowly, blinking the sleep from his eyes and sitting up to find Sam staring at him from across the motel room, dressed and ready to go in his fed suit. "Come on. There's been another kill" Sam informed him, holding up the Impala's keys and jangling them impatiently. Dean passed one hand over his face wearily, rubbing at his eyes. "ID?" "Didn't say on the scanner. So let's go find out." Sam tossed the keys. By pure instinct and nothing else, Dean reached up to snag them before they could hit him in the eye, then groaned and flopped backwards.

"Dean" came Sam's impatiently exasperated call from outside the motel room less than thirty seconds later. Dean rolled his eyes. "I'm coming!"

Back outside the garage bar, the boys arrived just in time to see Cal's body being loaded onto a stretcher and covered with a sheet. "Ok." Dean watched the stretcher being wheeled off towards the waiting ambulance, taking a moment to gather his thoughts.

"Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Cal's not our guy."

Dean rolled his eyes at the jab, ignoring it. Instead he simply continued to try and work through this new development in the case. "I mean, a werewolf attack in daylight? This whole thing is just weird." Sam didn't seem as bothered by this fact. "You know this means that we're down to one suspect, right" he pointed out, not having to identify that person for Dean to be on the same page. Dean sighed heavily. "Yeah, I know." "I mean, Mandy is right at the deep end of the vic pool" Sam elaborated despite the fact that Dean hadn't argued. "Can you do it?" Dean blinked, not understanding the question. "Do what?" "Shove her in the trunk, serve her up to Crowley." Sam made it sound so casual and cavalier as though it was as simple as going to the store for some milk. "Yeah Sam." Dean sighed, setting his jaw. "I can do it."

"Hi Ma'am." Dean smiled politely at Mandy as the brothers got out of the Impala and crossed the street to greet her in front of her house where she was getting the mail. She looked quite a bit more tired than the last time they'd seen her. "Agents. What...what are you doing here?" Dean furrowed his brow. She would know what they were doing there if she had any idea about Cal's death. "Nobody called you?" Mandy looked between the brothers, worry clouding her eyes. "Called me about what?" The boys swapped a look.

"I don't believe it" Mandy whispered ten minutes later, staring into the mug of tea she'd made herself, sitting at the kitchen table, her face white. "I'm really very sorry" Dean apologized genuinely. "Ma'am, I know this isn't the best time, but we'd like you to come with us" Sam requested, sounding nowhere near as sympathetic as Dean. "Why?" Mandy looked horrified. "You think I have something to do with all this? With Cal?" "Of course not" Dean assured her quickly before Sam could say anything in that distant, unfeeling way of his. "We just got a few questions – i's and t's, mostly." "I, uh..." Mandy glanced over one shoulder and then back to the boys, wringing out her hands. "Can we do it later?" "I'm afraid not" Sam refused and Mandy rubbed her forehead in exhaustion. "Oh. Well, see, my son has the flu, um, and he was up all night, so..." Mandy bit her lip, staring at Sam, clearly trying to get him to change his mind by feeling sorry for her, who was staring unmoved back at her. "Is there a neighbor or a friend who can watch him while you're gone?" Mandy opened her mouth but Dean cut her off suddenly, something occurring to him. "Hang on. You said your kid was up all night?" Mandy turned her attention to Dean, looking hesitant. "Yes." "And were you with him all night" Dean pressed. "Um – uh – well, I had, um, half an hour of sleep, maybe" Mandy guessed, still looking uncertain as to where this was going. Opposite her, Sam was wearing a similar expression. Rather than taking a minute to explain himself, Dean simply asked another question. "Can I talk to your son?" Mandy frowned protectively. "Why?" Sam turned to stare hard at Dean. "Yeah, what difference does that make, Agent Holt?" "It's important" Dean informed them both before swinging his gaze to Sam, giving him a stare equally as hard as the one he was receiving.

"Trust me."

"Well it wasn't her" Dean declared as the brothers wandered back down her front steps. "You don't know that" Sam objected, annoyed that another one of his "sure" suspects was turning out to be innocent. "She's got an alibi" Dean pointed out, to which Sam came flatly back with, "she's lying." "You heard the kid, dude" Dean returned at once. "She's not lying." "Fine." Sam exhaled sharply. "She still had time to wolf out, Dean. The last werewolf was in bed, with me, and she wolfed out, remember?" Sam certainly did. "Don't make this personal" Dean instructed, turning to face Sam head-on, holding up both hands. "Look, all I'm saying is that between this and the daylight attacks, something's not adding up. And I'm not just gonna hand her over to Crowley until we figure out what that is. You understand?" Sam rolled his eyes irritably, Dean's tone sounding remarkably patronizing, like Sam was a child who needed a time-out for breaking something.

"Okay. Okay. I understand. How 'bout you go check out Cal's crime scene, see if we're missing anything. I'll stay here and keep an eye on Amanda." "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. No." Dean shook his head multiple times. "How 'bout you go and I'll stay here?" "Dean, I still know how to do my job" Sam insisted tightly. "I'm just gonna watch her. That's all. Trust me."

"Uh huh..." Dean slid into the Impala, giving Sam a doubtful look, but he drove off nonetheless. Sam found a somewhat comfortable spot leaning up against a playground structure in the park across the street from Mandy's house, keeping both eyes on it for long stretches of time. If he'd had a soul it might have gotten tedious and boring but without one, he simply just kept waiting for something to happen. And finally, after about four hours, it did.

In the bedroom window, for about the last ten minutes now, Sam could see the head of the german shepard as the dog paced the floor, but suddenly, without warning, the head ducked down out of sight and then seconds later, a human head reappeared. Sam stared as the man attached to that head pulled a shirt on over his head, stepped into some pants and strolled right out of the house. "What the..." He followed at a slower pace, keeping the man in his sights, as they both set off for the other end of the park. They'd only been walking a short period of time with the other man came to a halt by an old tree where a third man was waiting. They conversed in low, angry voices. Sam was too far away to hear anything being said and he didn't want to risk moving any closer. Even if the other two seemed to not be getting along, they clearly knew each other and it would be two on one if Sam were discovered, odds he didn't particularly like.

After another few minutes, the skinwalker...for Sam had put two and two together all of a sudden and knew that's what this man was now...bid the other man goodbye and set off again. Sam followed. He was gaining ground on the skinwalker the further they went, anxious to see what he was up to. But suddenly, the skinwalker stopped cold, lifted his nose and sniffed the air. Sam, concerned he had caught his scent, flattened himself behind the nearest tree. But rather than changing courses and attacking Sam, the skinwalker morphed back into a dog and began running in the opposite direction. Sam took off after him but the dog was faster, bounding out into the street. He'd nearly gotten all the way across before Sam had even reached it, but before he could complete the crossing however, a big white station wagon came out of nowhere, breaking hard, though not hard enough. The front of its bumper collided with the dog who crumpled to the ground with a whimper. A man and a woman got out of the car, looking horrified. "Oh my god" the woman gasped, rushing forward. "It'll be ok boy" she promised before turning to the man who was presumably her husband. "We need to get him to a vet." He nodded in agreement, the two of them lifted him into the back of the station wagon and off it went. Sam stared after its headlights until they were gone before taking out his phone and speed dialing Bobby. Without so much as a hello as soon as the elder hunter had picked up, Sam inquired, "skinwalkers. What do you know about 'em?"

Ten minutes later he made another call, this one to Dean. "Well, I got bupkis here" Dean confessed in frustration. "You?" "I definitely got something." Sam returned to where he'd taken up a post outside of Mandy's house and retrieved his bag from behind the tree. "It ain't a werewolf, for one." "What is it" Dean prompted when Sam said nothing else. "A skinwalker" Sam announced dramatically. There was a beat. "A skinwalker" Dean repeated and Sam could practically hear the raised eyebrow in his voice. "As in..." Sam gave a dry smile. "As in, the family dog seriously needs a neuter." "Wow" Dean whistled. "I haven't come across a skinwalker in years. I'm actually a little rusty on the profile." "You and me both" was Sam's confession, draping his bag over one shoulder. "Uh, I just got the low down from Bobby. They can change anywhere, anytime. They infect you with a single bite. Otherwise, they're basically a werewolf cousin – silver will drop 'em, they chow hearts like sausages" Sam listed off, recalling the finer points from his brief conversation with Bobby. "So what happened" Dean wanted to know when he'd finished. "Did you catch him?" "Not exactly." Sam lifted one hand to flag down a passing car.

"But I have a hunch I know where he might be."

The boys met up at the local animal hospital and sure enough there was Lucky, the german shepard in one of the cages lining the back wall. He seemed perfectly fine. "Hiya Lucky." Dean smiled wryly. "Bad dog." The dog seemed to be glaring at them which was an odd look for a dog. "Alright, first things first." Dean glanced around to make sure none of the hospital staff were in the immediate vicinity and then pulled out his gun and ejected the clip, showing it to the dog. "You see this? This is silver. Don't say I didn't warn you." He returned the clip to his gun and stashed the gun in the back of his pants within easy reach. "Ok time to go" he announced, holding up a pair of jeans. "Now we can either do this the easy way..." He held up a chained leash with a pointed look.

"Or the hard way."

We hunt monsters....you know who does that? Crazy people!

The dog growled. Sam laughed. "What?" He shrugged defensively when Dean gave him a baffled look. "Soul or not, that's funny."

"Well, I got to tell you, Lucky, you got us stumped." Sam sat backwards on a chair in their motel room, watching the skinwalker, who'd chosen the "easy" way and was back in human form, tied to a chair. "I mean, why shack up with the family? Is it a kinky thing? Do you like to play with your food? Roll over, Lucky. Speak." 'Lucky' gave Sam an extremely hostile glare. "Go to hell." "Already been. Didn't agree with me." Sam stared calmly back at him. "So, look..." He rose from the chair, drawing a silver knife from an inner jacket pocket as he did. "...how about I take this silver knife, and start carving some dog until you behave?" 'Lucky' didn't even flinch. He looked straight at Sam, unfazed. "You do what you gotta do."

Which was permission enough for Sam.

Sam took a threatening step towards 'Lucky' but Dean held up a hand to stop him, pushing off the window sill and moving closer. "Hang on Sam." He gave the skinwalker an appraising look, coming to rest with his eyes on the other's eyes so they were looking directly at each other. "Listen, you don't have to tell me why you're with the family. I get it." "Oh you do do you" 'Lucky' challenged, obviously trying to keep up his 'tough guy' act, though it wasn't working so hot. What I want to know is, who was that guy you were kibitzing with? He a skinwalker, too?" 'Lucky' pulled a reluctant face. "Look, I can't say anything." "But if you don't, then you're gonna put the girl and the little boy in danger" Dean insisted, hammering his point home as hard as he could, using the only angle he had. "And sooner or later, all this crap is gonna come for them. Now, look...we don't give a rat's ass about you. We want to help them. That's our angle. That's it."

There was a long, heavy pause, in which Dean almost thought he had failed in trying to get through to him, but then finally, 'Lucky' spoke again in a resigned tone. "Yeah, that guy, he's a... whatever it is I am. And he's not the only one." "How many are you" Sam wanted to know from his position about a step behind Dean. 'Lucky' didn't even hesitate this time. "About 30. We were all -- we were kind of recruited." The boys exchanged a look, asking for clarification in unison. "Recruited?" "Yeah." 'Lucky' nodded. "Me, I was living on the streets. They found me. They told me one small bite, I'd be strong, I'd be fast." "Sniffing people's butts? Yeah, that's a real step up" Dean scoffed before he could stop himself. 'Lucky' scowled defensively. "Well it was for me." Dean held up his hands, backing down, before inquiring seriously, "so where is this little Scooby gang of yours?" "Everywhere." 'Lucky' gave a vague shrug. "We're out there finding families, and once they take us in, we lay low." "Lay low" Dean echoed, frowning. "What the hell does that mean?" "We're waiting for the word" 'Lucy' explained which didn't actually help all that much. "What word??" 'Lucky' looked between Sam and Dean, building the suspense before answering. "Once we're settled, we get the signal... and we all turn on our families. We change them, all in one night. 30 becomes 150." "Word from who" Sam pressed, stepping closer. "Who organized you?" 'Lucky' shrugged. "There's a pack leader." The boys exchanged another look. "Your alpha" Sam guessed, earning only a blank look from 'Lucky' that appeared genuine. "What's an alpha?" "The first skinwalker" Sam clarified. "The strongest." 'Lucky' shrugged again. "Well, he's plenty strong, but, no, I – I don't think so. I'm pretty sure there's guys like him in other towns. We're not the only pack out there." "Fantastic."

Dean closed his eyes, counted to five, regrouped himself, and then opened his eyes, a plan starting to formulate. "Then you can help us stop him." 'Lucky' paled, looking scared for the first time since they'd brought him to the motel room. "NO, no I can't." "Yes you can" Dean insisted without remorse. 'Lucky' shook his head frantically. "No, you guys don't get it. No one can stop them. These guys who turned me – they're ruthless." Dean opened his mouth to explain that "ruthless" was a relative term in their life and that it didn't really bother them, but Sam had other ideas. He whistled and held up a ball, which he threw across the room, smirking. "Sam." Dean exhaled sharply.

"Not helping."
