The instant Sam, Dean and the baby were out of sight, Samuel pulled out his tranquilizer gun, loaded with elephant tranquilizer darts. If Crowley was right and the alpha could sense the baby then that could mean only one thing was approaching their door right now. Gwen, Christian and Mark all raised their own guns, aiming them at the door. Only seconds passed before it was being kicked down and an exact replica of Samuel was striding into the room. "You have something of ours" the alpha shifter announced, kicking a chair aside as he made his way straight for Samuel. "I know he's here, I can feel him." Samuel tensed up, finger on the trigger.

Suddenly, the sound of gunfire rang out from behind them, Gwen having fired off three rounds from her shotgun into the shifter's back. Changing courses, the unaffected shifter heading for Gwen instead. She took a step back and Mark intervened, stepping between her and the shifter, stabbing a silver knife into the latter's chest with force. Despite the silver, it too seemed to have no effect as the shifter merely stood there, glaring at Mark. "Run" he shouted to the rest of his family just before the shifter reached out, twisting his head to the side with alarming speed, snapping his neck. "Mark" Christian yelled in panic. Samuel fired one of his dart's into the shifter's back, who stumbled half a step and then flung out one hand for something to balance with and his fingers found Gwen's neck, beginning to strangle her. With a bit more urgency, Samuel fired off another three darts, peppering the shifter's back with them. It took another second but the drugs in the darts began to take hold, weakening the shifter, who released the gasping Gwen, allowing her to stagger backwards, breathing deeply. "Easy there tiger" Samuel addressed the alpha, moving a step closer. "Get the silver nets" he added, this time speaking to Christian. "We're gonna box him up."

Christian nodded but had only taken half a step in that direction when the alpha straightened up, giving them all an odd little smile, as the tranquilizer darts magically came popping out of his back, flying across the room. Samuel stared in horrified awe. Now that was unexpected.

To put it mildly.

Sam and Dean were holed up in the panic room, Sam simply leaning against the wall with crossed arms while Dean held the crying baby to his chest, pacing anxiously. "Come on Bobby John, you have GOT to keep quiet" Dean urged him, increasing the urgency of his rocking. From above them came the sound of gunfire and then a muffled shout that couldn't quite be made out but did not sound as though it was a positive one. "It does not sound good up there" Dean observed rather rhetorically. Sam cocked his head, listening, and then pushed off the wall. "Alright, I'm going to go up. Stay with the baby." Dean opened his mouth, not sure that was a good idea, but before he could even get the word "Sam" out of his mouth, the door to the panic room was being ripped from its hinges, tossed to one side effortlessly, and in strode...Sam.

The brothers stared at the shifter as it took another step closer. Finally, Sam...the real Sam...drew his silver knife and rushed the shifter. The struggle did not last long before Sam was overpowered by the shifter version of himself, thrown through the open doorway. Dean winced as he heard the sound of his brother connecting with the far wall, and then no further sounds, implying quite clearly he'd been knocked out. Shifter Sam turned his head slowly to look at Dean now that Sam was out of the way. Dean held the baby closer. As the shifter advanced, he suddenly and without warning morphed into a replica of Dean without shedding its skin. It just changed forms. Dean stared openly. "What the..."

"Give me the baby" shifter Dean ordered, holding out one hand. "No way in hell." Dean took an automatic step backwards. Shifter Dean took the outstretched hand and wrapped those strong fingers around Dean's throat, beginning to choke him. Using his other hand, shifter Dean slid Bobby John from Dean's now relaxed grip, then slammed Dean's head backwards against the wall.

Everything went black.

When Dean's eyes fluttered open weakly, he wasn't sure how much time had passed. All he knew was that shifter Dean and Bobby John were gone. Groaning slightly and placing a hand to the base of his skull where it had made the most contact with the solid wall, Dean slowly pushed himself to his feet and made his way back upstairs. The room was a mess. Broken furniture everywhere, and Mark's comatose body lying in the middle of the floor. The earlier shout made sense now. Gwen and Christian were starting to straighten up the mess silently with downcast expressions. Sam and Samuel were off in the corner, conversing in low tones. Dean bypassed Gwen and Christian without sparing them a second look, reaching his brother and Samuel just in time to hear the latter saying, "Well, I'm pretty sure it's not a myth now." "Yeah" Sam agreed with a vigorous nod. "What the hell was that thing" Dean wanted to know. Samuel let out a deep breath. "We think it may have been an Alpha."

Dean blinked. "An alpha, like..." "Like all monsters come from somewhere, right" Samuel pointed out, shrugging. Dean raised an eyebrow, trying to follow this. "And you think this one was..." "The king shapeshifter" Samuel confirmed grimly. "First one who spawned all the others - there's tons of lore about it." "That's why it was so strong, and why nothing we had stopped it" Sam added, seeming to be keeping up just fine. Samuel nodded his agreement of this fact before finishing with, "and he said that he could find the baby anywhere. That he could feel it, like there's a connection. That's in the lore, too." Dean furrowed his brow. "What the hell does it want with babies, anyway?" "A softball team" Samuel quipped dryly, shaking his head. "I don't know." "Great." Dean heaved an exasperated sigh. "Well then how do we kill it?" Samuel shook his head again, looking unsettled. "I don't know if we can." Dean's answering smile was devoid of humor. "Awesome."

"You know, it's funny" Dean mused aloud as he and Sam wandered away from the Campbell's Base Compound ten minutes later. "What's that" Sam wanted to know, distracted. "Just before you ganked that shifter in the motel, he mentioned a father, which makes sense now because he meant the Alpha" Dean reminded his brother, keeping his tone light. "Huh." Sam nodded, recalling this. "Yeah, I guess so." "Did you hear him say that" was Dean's next question, probing. "Uh, I don't know" Sam chuckled, looking almost amused by the question. "Kind of a hot moment, you know? Why?" "Well, because if you heard him, then you knew the Alpha was out there" Dean rationalized, speaking slowly, voicing some concerns that had been crowding the back of his mind for awhile now. "And if you knew the Alpha was out there then you knew he might come after the baby. In which case you were using the baby as bait." They'd reached the car. Dean turned to face Sam expectantly. "So was that the plan? To use the baby as bait?" "Of course not" Sam objected without missing a beat, though there was something off about his expression. "Dean, I just thought that Samuel's was the safest place. That's all." Dean studied him carefully for an extra minute, not entirely buying that. But Sam stood firm so Dean had no choice but to back off of the accusation. "Right, sure, of course" he agreed with a smile that didn't fully reach his eyes.

With the case taken care of, Dean returned to Lisa's. She was drying dishes over the sink. Upon seeing him enter the kitchen, her whole face lit up. "Hey." Putting down the plate in her hands, she crossed to give him a welcoming hug and kiss. Dean returned the greeting. "Hey." His gaze roamed the kitchen. "Where's Ben?" Lisa picked the plate back up, her answer casual. "Bike ride." Dean froze, his breathing hitching in his throat. Lisa picked up on this immediately, lowering the plate once more. "What?" The question was almost a challenge. "I don't know what to do here, Lis" he admitted, shoulders slumping. "I mean, if I knew for sure what the safest thing was, then I'd do it. Stay here and look after you guys or get as far away as I possibly can, but I don't know." He lifted one hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, eyes closed, and then expanded that to rub at his whole face in exhaustion. "And I get what I've been doing lately, you know, what with the yelling and the acting like a prison guard. It's just, that's not me." He lowered his hand and opened his eyes. "You tell yourself you're not gonna be something, you know? But my dad was exactly like this. All the time. It's scaring the hell out of me."

Lisa stepped away from the sink, approaching him again with a sympathetic expression. "Dean, can I be honest?" She touched his arm briefly and then lowered her hand back to one side. "Maybe we're safer with you here, maybe gone. I don't know. The one thing that I do know is that you're not a construction worker." She gave him a knowing look. "You're a hunter." There was a slight pause before she rushed on to add, "and now you know your brother's out there, things are different. You don't want to be here, Dean." "Yes I do" Dean argued hoarsely, feeling a tug on his heartstrings. "Okay" Lisa relented with a sad smile. "Okay, but you also want to be there. I get it. I do." She gathered his hands in hers, squeezing gently. "You're white-knuckling it living like this. Like what you are is some bad, awful thing. But you're not." She gave him an encouraging smile that faded after a moment. "But I'm not going to have this discussion every time you leave" she informed him, letting go of his hands. "And this is just going to keep happening, so I need you to go." "I can't just lose you and Ben" Dean objected, feeling panic start to clog his throat. "You're not losing us" Lisa stressed, causing Dean to frown in total confusion. "You're saying hit the road" he summarized her little speech. She shook her head once. "That's not what I'm saying." Dean felt totally wrong footed here. He opened his mouth, could think of nothing to say, and closed it.

Lisa bestowed a small, fond smile upon him. "Dean, if there's some rule that says this all has to be either/or, how about we break it? Me and Ben will be here, and you come when you can. Just come in one piece, okay?" "You really think we can pull something like that off" Dean wanted to know. It sounded really good on paper but the reality of it might be harder to produce. "I think it's worth a shot." Lisa reached into her pocket and pulled something out, gesturing for Dean to hold out one hand, which he did. Uncurling her fist, Lisa dropped whatever she was holding into Dean's outstretched palm. He looked down. It was the Impala's keys.

Standing in the garage, Dean removed the tarp covering his baby with a flourish, grinning from ear to ear.

"I'm back."
